After finding out a fair few of us are mountain bikers and going out and cleaning mine up and adding some new bits i thought id get some pics for insurance purposes and such, so thought why not share em and see what everyone else rides (im expecting some funny buggers to post pictures of wives/dogs/lee/inflatable sheep and other such funnies, but i do mean mountain bikes)

Heres mine, its 2008 carrera vulcan XC disc spec, it came with tektro cable discs which ive swapped for avid elixir-R hydraulics, the forks were a capable SR suntour job but i was too fat for them so they went in favour of a pair of rock shox dart II's and ive just replaced the grips which were alwasys sliding off, for some bontager lock ons, and ive replaced my cheap 'innova' tyres for some shiny panaracer fire FR 2.4's.

She has a full sram groupset and a truvative crankset not up on what groupsets are these days so i reckon its capable cheapo stuff tbh lol

Anyways, pics.......

Tbh mate youre best off getting one from ebay or something along the lines of mine, a decent base spec one from hellfrauds and build up from there, if you build a bike up from the ground up it would be epic expensive!

Last time I checked I had

GT Timberline for XC. Usual story, broke all the standard stuff and now sports XT drivetrain, Avid Vee's (Deroe hydro Disc to go on once I swap the levers) RS Duke SL's, lots of Raceface goodies  just a shame the frames a bit big (20")

Azonic Evo 2 (fooking rare) had the last frame in the county. Built it up as a single speed using mostly DMR parts/wheels. RS Pylso SL's, some times run it with a 26" front wheel for DH tracks, otherwise it's 24's for street/jump.

Orange Clockwork '97 (I think) I believe its the second gen with the orange/white/orange paint. Did have RS Mag 21's, but they bust and now runs a ridged. It's built from bits and pieces by the previous owner, some awesome, some ****.

Never really taken photos of the bikes...

I've currently got a Specialized Hardrock. I bought it a few years ago and it's pretty basic, but it's a very nice riding bike.

However, MC and I are looking at treating ourselves to one of these each:

http://cdn.mos.bikeradar.com/images/news/2009/05/15/1242383967198-1mwp9mazodmay-500-90-500-70.jpg
It's the Carrera Fury 09. I've never really looked at a bike before and thought "that's a really good looking bike" but the Fury really is. I tested one in Halfords at the weekend and liked it a lot. Who knows, might have one next week :d

Jim.

Nick
30-08-09, 03:58 PM
The Fury's are pretty good.

Mate of mine got a frame and built it up slowly.... Theres probably some bits on it that you'd eventually want to change - but that's like any off the shelf build.

Jim
30-08-09, 04:37 PM
Which bits would you suggest changing Nick? Not that I'd plan to, just curious.

craig green
30-08-09, 04:48 PM
I'd say the saddle might not be to your liking, things like branded (non-shimano) transmission parts are usually taiwanese & not as good as they look. Tyres might be OE spec branded ones too, but aftermarket ones are lighter & better quality as with the wheels too. Not saying its a bad bike, just how it is with bikes built to a budget.

Jim
30-08-09, 04:54 PM
In that case, would you say it would be more cost effective for me to build up the specialized frame that I have?

Steve
30-08-09, 04:57 PM
Nice selection of bikes on here, alot more bikers than I would have thought. Make mine look like a right sh!tter!! lol lol

GDN16v
30-08-09, 04:57 PM

At least you get the parts you want instead of buying a bike which needs another £100 - £150 spent on it to get it the way you want it!:thumb:

Nick

In that case, would you say it would be more cost effective for me to build up the specialized frame that I have?

Building it youself allways comes to much more than buying a bike from the shop.

I'm not sure on the exact spec of the fury, but there will be bits you will probably get the urge to change - Tyres, pedals, bars/Stem... Drivetrain components.

I suggest looking at Chainreactioncycles.com . They have loadsa sales on at the moment and you'l be able to price up building your own frame. The only really tricky part is getting the right BB and Chainset combo, but even thats a doddle if you drop them an email. Also you'l need a BB tool, Maybe a crank tool, Lockring tool for the cassette (unless you buy a pair of wheels with the cassette built on).

Jim
30-08-09, 07:25 PM
Cheers for the advice guys, TBH, I doubt I'll ever get that serious that I'll have the urge to change the components of the fury. It's better than what I have at the moment and will hopefully last me a good few years...if I get one.

I have just bought the same bike you have Spudly. I want to get back into biking but did not see the point in spending £500-£1000 on a decent bike only to use it for 6 months then leave it rotting in the shed.
Got a cracking deal on it, they have been reduced from £375 to £250 but there was only one place local that had it in stock.
So happens that a mate of a mate works there and got talking to him, the stock bike had been on display so had a few light marks on it so asked hime what he would do it for. In the end I got it for £200 which I thought was pretty good for a disc spec ally framed bike.
If I get back into it in a big way then I can justify spending the extra on a better bike and then give this one to the missus

Spudly
30-08-09, 09:34 PM
Thats similar to how i got mine, i ended up paying £208 for it lol

Id stick with it for a bit and upgrade the forks/brakes/tyres as ive done with mine and its made it so much more rideable, dith the oe tyres asap though as they weigh a ton and mine feel much more spritely for having light kevlar beaded ones on it:thumb:

Stick at it rich, its a way of life which im so glad to be back into!

Kona Blast, 2001 model I think, rock shox judy TT forks, 24spd LX mechs, kona's usual odd crankset, unknown v brakes. Bought it on finance in '02, did maybe a hundred miles on it up to '05, and it's sat in the garage behind various piles of junk since. The seat tube angle and slim seat are a bit too harsh for me, gets painfull after as little as 10 minutes.

It's all about the Magic number - 55 !

Well, basically, think about it... When you're riding a pretty average trail or blasting down some city roads - how often do you actually change gear !? Alot less than you think.

Get the ratio's as close to 55 and then experiment to your taste. You'l end up with something that accelerates pretty quick and has a decent top-end.

I was sceptical, but it's really awesome. Plus BMX components are cheap and damn robust - Scene points FTW

My point is that those, like the one Matt posted are lazy bikes

Waaayy too much suspension travel to ride uphill.

On the Quantock hills, which is awesome for biking, some chimps have man made a downhill section, they all sit at the bottom blazing spliffs, push to the top and roll down, that's not mountain biking ffs.

And new school according to trials forums, seems to be the best way, loads of sets around, trying not to spend more on the brakes than I did on the entire bike though lol

Trials riders don't seem to be a fan of discs either spud, to be fair mechanical advantage wise they are flawed and I'm not 100% sure how they developed as much stopping power as they do compared to rim brakes tbh!

Bubba
24-11-10, 11:44 PM
probably to do with pressure over surface area, compounds used etc...the fact hs33's are hydraulic makes them awsome for trials. i found my disc was better for racing 4X

true but its all about the pressure and the frictional coefficient of the materials used.

basically idiots are pushing up the prices of 90's scrap metal by paying silly prIces to hang onto a dream/there yooof

and bikes are going the same way as novas

90's bikes are getting more and more sort after... I had a couple of emails from people on retrobike to buy mine for nearly double what I spent on it :-) saying that, I got a bit of a bargain... Not many carbon light weight bikes can be bought for under £500!! Other than servicing normal components etc it was in mint condition for a 10year old bike... Though saying that retro bikes are going for silly money, they are still cheaper and just
as well built as modern bikes IMO.

On a side note, a few guys from work are
off up Cannock this Sunday at
10:30am if peeps fancy it.

Should be picking it up later this week I hope. Ok so not strictly a mountain bike, but close! lol

Better pictures etc to come later, Spudly, edjumacate me on brakes :/ This one has mounts for hydraulics with vee adapters so standard brakes are shoddy, finding cheap hydraulics is hard as hell though :p

I've got a missions trial master trials bike. Had it 7years or so. It has tektro v brakes and kool stop pads, and they are sh!t hot! If I were you, you'd be better off fitting maguras. That's what I'm looking for, for the rear of my sts.

Edit... Just seen yours and spudlys msgs. I've watching/emailing/bidding on every set of maguras I can find on eBay as well for the past 3 weeks lol. Got outbd on a couple :-(

If you're looking for a trials bike, there are loads of Onza's on ebay with maguras fitted, £100-150. Best going down that route... I've been watching bikes with maguras fitted to buy then break them just for the brakes.

I went out cycling at Cannock on Sunday, never seen the place so busy... Sadly no pics :( I don'd a pair of shorts and it was cold!! -6deg to be precised. Certainly put a bit of fire in the lungs on the steep climbs.

I did have a bit of a moment, was a little overzealous over a large mound not realising there were massive ruts and a tight 90 right straight after it... Face on frozen mud and ice tends not to be too wise. blew the front inner tube up, bent the rear brake lever, and somehow blew the MC seals so pissed fluid all over my gloves :( My mates weren't too helpful whilst I knelt in the snow stripping the wheel down, the only contribution I got from them was sticks thrown from a distance.

The rest of the ride was ok, a little sketchy as there was so much black ice, and with only a rear brake it wasn't bril. Proper good laugh though and cuts and bruises will heal lol

MK999
24-12-10, 11:49 PM
It's a bit of a mongrel really, was made by a "look we do all kinds of specialist stuff" kind of company rather than a pure trials outfit, so it had V brakes (for the masses) adapted onto magura mounts (for trials) and gears (for the masses) with a saddle you cant ride on without bruising your ****, found out the hard way (for trials or well, to pull off and bin for trials lol)

I am planning to sack it off to single speed, but I've already spent far too much on it atm and I need to find a nice medium between a 'trials gear' and a 'commuting gear' or work out how best to run 2 gears with a manual swap of some sort. As it is atm, it's really heavy on the back end compared to the front which is horrible.

Really I wanted an inspired fourplay, but at 5x ++ what this cost me, it wasn't gonna happen!

Mk, as in Mark, I think... Although my initials are also MKH, started using it like 6-7 years ago and it's just default autopilot typed in username now tbh lol

It went down a treat on the trials forum... I think the nicest comment was "well, I like the colours" lol Apparently anything costing under £600 and over 2 years old is frowned upon :p I quite like it though! Unless you're buying and selling, the price is irrelevant unless you're asking because you want it :p He can offer me that frame you're after for a pound if he likes, it will either end up on ebay or I'll just not take it because I have no interest in owning it lol Whereas as Andy said you have an interesting in owning most of the bikes which have been posted on the forum :p

ive got this 98/99 kona nunu that ive owned since 2001.
http://i1035.photobucket.com/albums/a438/grooge/konaracebike.jpg

hope hubs and headset, mavic rims, xt mechs, z5 bombers, avid brakes.
some of its not top end kit but i race this bike and imo theres no point in spending lots on certain parts, i go through them quite fast, especially gearing. might change to a set of z1 bombers next year so i can run an xt hydro front brake, this frame/fork has no mounts. also got dx clipless pedals waiting to go on.

this is a long running project ive had for just over a year, 99 kona stinky that cost me £80 and i'm using mostly spare parts to build it so it cost nothing.
http://i1035.photobucket.com/albums/a438/grooge/IMGP1078.jpg
picture isnt how it stands now.
fork in the pic was twisted, buckled and the crown bolts were threaded so i put on a z1 and fitted a new fsa headset i had lying around.
there was a spoke missing on the front hub, a hope bigun. no problem i though, i'll fire a new spoke on and true it up. unfortunately the spoke had ripped out the hub but seeing as the flanges on this particlaur hub are fairly large i decided to do a bodge job on it and drilled a new spoke hole and used a longer spoke. also put in a new bottom bracket and 3 ring chainset as the one that was on was gubbed, fitted a rear v-brake and a front hydro and trued up the rear wheel.
still needs shifters and then its good to go.
also own a commencal absolut, specialized fuse bmx, some hoffman bmx, old skool skyway TA bmx, specialed allez road bike and a couple others.
i have been meaning to sell the commencal, and all the bmxs for ages but dont know if i'll ever get round to it!

its funny how the likes of the skyways and the burners are so sought after now, 5-10 years ago i used to have dozens of them, used to ride them to death, ghost riding them off cliffs n jumps berfore skipping them on the way home!
first realised they were worth something when my mate almost got arrested for theft after finding one in a field one morning and claiming it. the owner of the bike said it went missing a few nights before and wasnt happy when he saw my pal riding around on it!
stopped binning all old bmx parts after that

its funny how the likes of the skyways and the burners are so sought after now, 5-10 years ago i used to have dozens of them, used to ride them to death, ghost riding them off cliffs n jumps berfore skipping them on the way home!
first realised they were worth something when my mate almost got arrested for theft after finding one in a field one morning and claiming it. the owner of the bike said it went missing a few nights before and wasnt happy when he saw my pal riding around on it!
stopped binning all old bmx parts after that
my Haro was a skip find and the owner was glad for me to take it away.

just bought an Identiti Dr Jekyll with slightly shoddy RST HI5 tripple clamps off the bay for 90quid. (crank not included)

then my mate told me he had a Norco 250 24inch for 150quid...and as they retail at about 5-600...im buying that tomorrow :d

Massive fan of the Dr Jekyl frame. I had a frame years ago with bomber triple clamps, but nothing else. Ended up selling it.

I'll put my crappy bike up soon. Nothing special, but has sentimental value, as I've had it nearly 10 years.
