Yeah I belive thatS right.I also think here could be limit on the length ...not 100% sure but i would look into that also !!

I also think that if you passed after a certain date you may need to take a test also !!

if you passed before 97 and you have transfered to a photo licence once that is due for renewal you will also loose the entitlement robbing bs

just been looking on direct gov and thats on there also says you can tow over 750kg if trailer dosent exceed veh mam and that combined are not over 3.5 ton nice simple law then i see lol

licence dosent bother me the trailer is around 700kg so ok on the licence but need to know if the van is legal to tow it

cheers

Look at your VIN plate, that has max weights etc on there.

The DVLA info is a bit of a mess to trawl through, as for <3.5t its a bit flakey and depends all on the unladen weight of the towing vehicle. Essentially its like this though:

Say, for example, the Nova weighs 950Kgs unladen.
If you have a Cat B license, you can tow up to 750Kgs laden.
If you have a Cat B+E license, you can tow up to 950Kgs laden.

Max width of the trailer is 2.3m, length 7m (18m length combined).

If the trailer has a max DESIGNED (i.e. doesn't matter what weight it is carrying, its how much its capable of taking) laden weight of over 750Kgs, it should be braked. Also, if the laden weight of the trailer exceeds 50% of the vehicle weight (in this case, 475Kgs), it must be braked.

You can be done if you're exceeding the manufacturer's max towing weights as well btw. As said, this will be on the VIN though

[edit] I think you're allowed to exceed these limits IF you have to tow another vehicle for an emergency (i.e. clear a broken down vehicle from a road or motorway) but you can only tow it as far as taking it to a safer location

As I understood it Jack,
If you have a Cat B license, you can tow up to 750Kgs MAM. -If the unladen weight of the vehicle plus the MAM of the trailer exceed 3.5t
If you have a Cat B license, you can tow up to 950Kgs MAM -If the unladen weight of the vehicle plus the MAM of the trailer do not exceed 3.5t

The good ship mondeo weighs 1535Kg unladen, and there's a lot of towing discussion on their club website, from that I've gleaned that I could tow a trailer with a MAM of up to 1535Kg.
If you have a Cat B+E license, you can tow up to 950Kgs MAM.

Handy info. I'd assume the fact its a van makes no shakes though, just go by the engine data.

So you can tow up to 750Kgs braked, or 400Kgs unbraked (assuming only a Cat B license)...

lol @ the 1.2i, wonder if anyone has tried to tow with one of them!!

I tried towing a corsa with my 1.2 carb once. It took around 1/3 of a mile to hit 30mph up a very slight gradient lol.

Wrong.

What I posted a few months back,

It is a minefield but I'll have a go at trying to explain it using my vectra as an example,

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v689/mickyd79/SRI%20140/HPIM2348a.jpg

Unladen weight according to the owners manual is 1350kgs. So you'd assume that a trailer upto 1300kgs GVW (aka MAM) would be ok under a cat B licence, and it would as the GCW or combined MAM would be 3150kgs.

But here's the cincher, see that GCW figure on the chassis plate? Gross combination weight, aka train weight, aka combined MAM. This is the maximum combined weight that the vehicle is approved for by the manufacturer, With a 1300kg trailer I'd be going over this figure, which is a major no-no (going beyond type approval specifications), so the maximum this car can take is a trailer upto 1200kgs GVW, and that can be done on just a cat B licence.

So basicly find your VIN plate, subtract the GVW from the GCW and thats the limit to what you can tow. Or go on parker's and look up your mundaneo, as they list the maximum towing weights in the facts and figure in the reveiws.

According to my VIN, 2035KG Gross weight, 3750KG Towing weight, so I could tow 1715KG according to that. Seeing as that's higher than the unladen weight of the vehicle, its that 1535KG unladen weight figure that restricts me, or at least will restrict me, when I eventually get a towbar fitted.
