Very possibly the worst project thread in the world - but its an update nonetheless!

Not sure if anyone will remember seeing the originals of this car but it started with the best of intentions - then ended up in the garage for 18mths while I moved house, family stuff, yada yada yada...

Well - last weekend, courtesy of mr reid theres been something worth taking a picture of - I give you:

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/DSC00112.jpg

It's not quite done due to not having all the right bits to hand but pending a new fuel pump and dizzy should be sorted out early next week...

Can't wait lol

After taking the old engine mounts off and deciding the front offside was shagged, tom convinced me to try a prototype SOLID (yes im shouting) mount, dont think this will move much:

Mini update (but no pics unfortunately due to it being outside and getting dark) - got the facet cube mounted, wired up with a standalone switch/fuse and plumbed in up to the reg and to the carbs. Removed the delco dizzy and now just have to swap the cam and fit the bosch dizzy - so she will be running for tuning on sunday....

Megajolt is now built... need to get it wired in and mapped.

Also now i look at the bay i think it will have to get tidier....

So plans: once the megajolt is on the firewalls coming out, mount the fuel reg on the bulkhead - lose the washer bottle for a small bag on the bulkhead too then sort a smarter header tank. should free up both the inner wings and then a bit of faffing with the lights loom to tuck it under the slam panel and that should do it.

Im running a manifold from tom reid, pm him for prices! (tom reid username).

Yes you can run coil and dizzy, in fact i was for about 1000 miles, ive just upgraded to the megajolt to see how much improvement it offers!

Prey

Started with the megajolt startup map and tweaked it from there, the initial mapping was done by tom reid and andy tedder - so massive thanks to them!

The cam cover is actually borrowed as the engine itself hasnt been under andy yet, however he did do the initial mapping with tom so the engines kind of 'earned its stripes' now lol.

Hopefully he will be doing further work on it though - plan on a lightened flywheel, vernier and potentially head work in the future.

Yours looks awesome by the way mate - would love to see it in action!

Ive not had a problem with them coming loose recently (1000 miles or so), but you do have to use the narrow jubilee clips on the carb ends cause the bigger ones do slip off! I need to get some fuel resistant hose though - as this stuff wont last forever!

As an upgrade from a stock 1300, is it worth it on the dizzy then?

Or is magajolt essential for more poke?

Prey

I wouldnt guess it would be worth it on a standard motor but if you have a few upgrades then the mj allows you to tune the ignition accordingly.

Had it on the gas analyser and wideband with the megajolt, seems to have leaned it off so have given it a little more fuel on the needles for now, to see if I need to go up another jet size.

Update! well pre-date, or stuff i should have posted by now anyway.

Also if a mod could put megajolt in the title i'd be much obligued.

Well dizzy is now officially retired, running megajolt full time now - very happy with it. The engine feels much smoother, more willing low down and stronger midrange. i don't think its made a deal of difference to the top end but that is most likely the cam I am running as its pretty mild.

Taken a few pics of the install now, to follow. Bear with me, it's messy as I haven't put it in properly yet - I am going to relocate the edis inside the car so there will only be wires running to the coil, crank sensor and tps in the engine bay - nice and neat. I also have a dizzy blank but haven't put this on yet.

Also - warning - phone camera pics, so not the best!

Yes mate, hollow trigger wheel from trigger-wheels.com with a slightly turned down standard pulley (so theres a bit more meat to weld to) and welded on - keeps it neat.

Coil pack, currently pikey mounted with big cable ties, will be relocated to the inner wing now the coil/amp has gone:

And the edis unit on the bulkhead, this is moving behind the dash to tidy the bay:

Currently running the wiring into the car here, but when I rehash the wiring will be going through the bulkhead in the inlet area:

I'd be interested to see pics of how uve installed everything, what setup you're using etc - get a thread up!

Also have you got any figures etc to show how much of an improvement you got? As far as I understand it if you're not using the tps or any load variables of any kind you're only using one line of the map in the megajolt - which is effectively rendering it only as useful as a dizzy?

Nice to see you are local as well, be good to meet and see what your doing with it etc.

with the megajolt the timming is spot on all the time the car went from being last off the line to being up front with out any engine mods apart from vernia and a mild cam we are looking at going to megasquirt as we have a set of r1 trottle boddies but this a little more complex need advise from any one that has fitted it will get pics up soon
At the moment we are building a new car for 2010 ok its a 106 but vauxhall engine in the rear if you havent been to any autograss meeting i would advise it see some good action

from tom (tom reid), a friend of his machines them to fit the r1 flanges, then theyre just mounted as normal.

if you are interested in a manifold/edis stuff or whatever pm tom, he can sort out most aspects of the carbs/megajolt.

Had 15mins last night so made up a shift lift from a butchered high level brake light - it will do for now until I get some stripboard to make a sequential one.

Can the lights be graduated with the rise in revs when connected to MJ?
yes it can be set to any rpm for the lights from the settings with the pc we have set ours to 7500 rpm for the shift light and the rev limiter to 8500

Prey
17-01-10, 06:50 PM
Made a sequential one last night, five pairs of leds that come on at 5600, 5700, 5800, 5900 and 6000 revs using the 4 user outputs and shift light output. Hardly rocket science but I wanted to do it anyway. Personally I prefer the single shift light though - don't have time to be watching christmas tree lights lol

No photo yet but I have gone back to two single lights for shift related duties, a yellow for a 'spirited shift' and a red for a 'just about to hit the limiter' shift.

Just wondering how do you go about mapping the car? I take it you have a base map given from megajolt to use, but how do you get about inputing the values? Do you just guess a value or are there certain values for certain rpm?

The base map that comes with the megajolt is supposed to be safe for most engines and will get you running. Then you can tune it to it your specific engine - mine was tuned on the road with an aftermarket wideband and knock sensor to keep an eye on things.

Drivetrain update! Got my gearbox swapped over yesterday - so thanks due again to tom reid for the help and facilities and draper for standing about doing pretty much nothing ... cheers chaps!

Only one little hitch, I couldnt put my paddle clutch in because I wasnt aware the flywheel needed skimming - so that will be fitted when I can get a replacement flywheel done.

Have gone from an f13 CR, 3.7 diff, standard clutch and flywheel to a freshened up f13 CR, 4.1 diff + quaife, paddle clutch (when i can fit it) and a superlight flywheel.

Didnt take many pics as I still havent tracked down my camera, think the pixies have had that. Only these to show for now - I will get one of it in the car just for the sake of it later:

Flywheel on:

Box ready to go in:

I know I should have taken some more but everyone knows what a nova on axle stands looks like, also did the lower arm polybushes as everything was accessible.

Well report wise - im impressed! As a package it has completely changed the manner of the car, the drive is much more urgent and the launch from corners is massively improved.

Obviously only played with it for one day but im looking forward to the rain!

fit new bigger rad and spal fan,
change starter motor,
cut the fuel resistant hose for the carbs,

clean and paint a few bits,

found a place that sells the 1.5mm black dimpled sheet - just got to measure up accurately and work out whether best to buy the big sheets or ones that just fit - i take it you only want fronts?

Got round to doing the front bumper iron removal - welded a washer and nut onto the brackets (cheers tom!):

Some tube glued into the bumper for spacing after trimming all the lugs etc off:

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/DSC01167.jpg

And on the car, don't stand out much really - will touch them with grey if they annoy me. Bumper now removed with two allen bolts on front and two original 10mm on wings:

Finally the battery is going in the back, so I moved my fuel reg into the vacant space to tidy the bay:

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/DSC01172.jpg

Also tided some wiring up on this side - fan, reverse switch, horn and earth strap etc:

The crap and muck everywhere is because I covered the seams with watered down clear waxoyl when they were done - I will get round to cleaning it up..... maybe.

For anyone that is interested I've removed the radio, surplus (ie options I didn't have) and now not needed (rear wash/wipe, switch lighting etc) wiring.

Also put in my fusebox for the fuel pump and mj, earths for mj, tps and edis. Finally ran my ignition battery cable, fuel pump live and washer pump down the centre of the car - need to add to this the extended cable for the alternator/starter.

Im thinking about cutting the dash down a bit before putting it back in - I need to keep the top for the heater vents and to look reasonably standard from outside. Pondering removing the black area - and then painting the rest satin black:

Well i chopped it anyway - and mounted the fusebox etc up, I think it looks ok and will definately make accessing fuses easier than when it was rattling about behind the dash like it used to:

After a mooch round looms (local scrappy) with lionel on the wkend I picked up a zx wiper mechanism to fit - mistakenly thinking that it would save some weight (it doesn't btw, so don't bother if thats your thing) - but essentially all it does is tidy up the bay a bit more and lose the motor from the firewall.

Anyway, cleaned up mechanism:

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0067.jpg

Mounted:

http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i144/prey001/nova/IMGP0073.jpg

I found that just the one bolt through the scuttle gutter let the wiper flex a lot, so I also put one through the top of the scuttle with a spacer. Both the tabs on the wiper mech needed bending to allow the spindle to sit at a decent angle to the screen.

I tested it with the nova wiper arm but will be using the zx one as it sweeps better, just need to trim the length down a bit and rebend the tab on the end.

Iain

Did you cut off the unused bolt hole so it clears the bulkhead better too?

Prey

Ok ok I forgot some bits - yeah i did have to trim that tab off dude altho i think you could probably get away without it depending how hard you wanted to wedge it into the bulkhead - i also put a 2mm spacer in between the scuttle gutter bolt.

Prey

Now with video! The sweep isnt as good as the original but its good enough if biased to the drivers side a bit. I just need to shorten the wiper arm:
