Ever since the RAC man cleaned my carb with WD40 it hasent ran perfect.
It was ok yesterday and this morning but about 30mins ago it's doing the below.
I started her up just now and she ticks over around 900rpm (usually) 1100rpm and then everytime you apply the brakes it drops to around 100rpm when stopped.
Then if you pull the choke out it either makes it bog and just barely tick over or pull it out a little more and it revs the bollox off of it.
Then if you slightly apply the throttle it bogs and nearly cuts out unless you apply it harder and it revs fine?

Im new to this whole carb game as my dad usually sorts fueling side of the car out or diagnosis the problem then fixes it lol but he's away in America untill sunday so I have no choice but to ask for advice.

If it helps the timing has been advanced also causing the 1100rpm tickover.

Thanks for all who help
Stevie

give it a good spray with CARB cleaner see if that helps or check for air leaks

1100 on tick over is HIGH

Is this a GM varajet carb? They can be quite hateful things espcially at high mileage. Even the low mileage ones can need 'bullying' to keep from stalling on their first start of the day... Stutter and cough a bit like a rolls royce merlin..without the power...or the noise...obviously.....

this is the position of the chamber thing with no chock no throttle and ignition off:

is this correct or should it be like so:

also the black seal between the carb and airbox (around the carb on the pics) has been squashed and is not sealing on one side would that cause anything to leak as there was quite a lot of fuel around the carb?

no lol i have to get some first but will do it i just had a look tonight to see if it could be something else... it also seemed to be misfiring?

i would say the seal will be your problem

how about the positioning of the carb opening thing?
that was my 1st instinkt as it has no marking on a corner so is obviously not sealing there and leaking
but then i checked my other engine and the carb was in a differant position

right the choke is so called as when its used it "chokes" the air supply making the engine run rich, so the correct position for normal running is fully open. also with the seal being above the carb (therefore above the air/fuel mixture) the only difference it makes is it might be drawing in a little warm/dirty air, but where the carb is positioned and with the size of the gap that wont be a concern.

wd40 for a carb is not a good thing, get lots of carb cleaner, clean as much as possible out with the engine off, then get the engine fire up (might take a bit) and run some thru spraying whereever you can , but never enought to stall the engine.

your lucky youve got a 1b and not a 2e, twice as much to go wrong on the wretched things lol.
yeh that flaps hitting maximum choke there, it shouldnt seal completly, only restrict the airflow. replace that gasket around the carb too (can buy gasket paper cheap from local motorfactors and draw round your old one for a template to cut out, might need to stack a few ontop of each other as that particular gaskets kinda thick compared to the paper). and if i were you i'd invest £25 in a gunsons colourtune kit (14mm) so you can set the fueling up propper :thumb:

and like everyone else says, a good amount of carb cleaner on any moving parts like the throttle linkage and choke bit (move them about while your spraying to free them up fully), and blast a lil bit down the inside while its running.

Remove the top of the carb (2 screws and 2 nuts) and clean the top in petrol with a brush, remove all jets and blow through them,(dont poke anything in the jets) then remove all the crap thats lying in the float bowl that aa man has sprayed thru your carb with his wd40,also remove jets in this part and blow through them.. ideally you want to remove complete carb and do this off the car , and clean up the spacer plate with emery cloth and make two gaskets using the spacer plate as a template...judging by the amount of crap on top of your carb , you'll have lots in the float bowl...also clean your airbox with brush and petrol and replace filter and seal.

my carb is spotless that was on another engine was just showing how it was ... i think there may be some dirt in my jets so i will clean it thouroughly

sounds like a dirty jet. if you dont want to take it apart try starting the car up and raise the reves a bit then block the carb inlet with your hand. sometimes it pulls enough vacume to suck the blockage out the jet.
its not a hard job to take the carb appart and clean it. you dont need to take the jets out, just blow through them. use petrol to clean. its a nice little job cleaning a carb as long as you are careful and remember where it all goes. a good tip is to do it in a clean work bench. and dont drop it.

I can take the carb apart no problem i just cant diagnose problems lol its running much better noe but when i have time i will clean it all and strip it
