blocked carb jets maybe? theres nothing electrical other than the dizzy on those engines to cause problems, is it if you floor the throttle?

no all the time mainly when i try too rev it or set off and does anyone know the firing sequance for dizzy

1342 anticlockwise from top left i think mate, pierburg carbs suffer from the cold start playing about and that makes them cut out at idle, could be leads but normally it would hold back and missfire so i would say its carb related i had a 1300 that didnt idle coz of the cold start on the pierburg not working

Also how old are your plugs, dizzycap and rotor arm?

gavin198

Are the gaps set for the plugs for your engine. Try a set of standard plugs. Also is your timing set up correctly? Any overrun or miss firing?

Because you swapped the leads around  Put them as you had them.

yeah but the plug gap would be different in the calibra to the nova, what order where the leads in before you swapped them ?

As above your plugs will be set specifically for the calibra. Do you own a haynes manual as the correct setting will be in there. As I said put a set of standard plugs in just in case.

Also is the connection to your coil okay as I used to always have a problem with the bolt the connects underneath the wing to the coil as this gives it a earth, basically will give a bad connection.

the delco (black cap) distributor is prone to the advance retard diaphragm failing, this stops the timing from advancing when you accelerate, which causes it to die.. slacken the dizzy clamp & when it is running, turn the dizzy back towards the mastercylinder & see if the engine note improves. the auto choke could be shot. the plugs & leads might have failed. there could be crap in the fuel tank, causing fuel starvation. (test this by taking the outlet pipe off the pump & cranking it over.. the coil could have failed, it is more common than you think. the timing belt could have slipped a tooth etc.
