View Full Version : How to - Make your own beer
i'm a beer making noob so have started with a kit
You will need this little lot
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p72/wiggardywoo/SS102905.jpg
A fermentation bin (5 gallon food grade bucket with loose fitting lid)
A pressure barrel (or you can use bottles)
A syphoning tube (or you can use a jug if you're carefull)
A real ale making kit (includes yeast)
Some sugar (You can use household stuff, i've used brewing sugar for a better taste)
And finally some sterilising solution.
First job is to sterilise your equipment, this will take a couple of hours.
So see you in a couple of hours for the next instalment :thumb:

or articles lol
my matge brewed his own beer and it turned out alright i think. i just remember 3 massive jugs or this stuff brewing lol
and yeh he used old bottles but capped them him self
right, after you have given everything a good rinse you can begin,
sit the beer making mix in some hot water for 5 mins to soften it up, then pour it into the fermintation bucket.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p72/wiggardywoo/SS102908.jpg
add 6 pints of hot water, (i used the empty beer making mix tin as this also rinsed it out) All the sugar and the hop enhancer. Give it a good mix
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p72/wiggardywoo/SS102909.jpg
About know now mrs hobbit announced that the whole house started to smell like my feet lol
When its all mixed up add cold water.
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p72/wiggardywoo/SS102910.jpg
Now leave the mix to warm back up to room temp (18 to 21 degrees C)........
what the deuce is that stuff l14??? i want some!
It smells of defeat and tastes a little like Coca Cola dude. Try it. :thumb:
It got up to temp so i added the yeast and gave it a stir.
Its now sat in our wash room with the lid on loosley, will report back in a few days for the next stage :thumb:

coolio!
yeah i remember boots used to do them, i went looking in ours about a year ago and they had stopped :( my uncle lives in plymouth and when i went with him (albeit 10 years ago) there was a specialist shop just for home brewing!
so if anyone lives in plymouth.... maybe worth them taking a trip! anyone looked online for kits? i remember my grandad used to make elderflower wine and stuff like that, infact we still have all the massive glass jugs with the odd spouts that he used!

We have a home brew shop in Launceston, i could post you a mix if you cant find any :thumb:
Well the beer has been bubbling gently all night and it now smells like actual beer :d

sorry if you have already said this hobbit but how long is it going to take before you can start to get mullered lol?
couple of weeks if all goes well, but it could take upto three weeks
There was a thing on TV a while back about homebrew shiznit and how it was coming back into fashion a bit, and the ales were actually pretty good (not the stuff that tasted like bad coffee that your dad used to brew under the stairs int he 70s)
When I worked at boots they used to do all the homebrew kits. They never, ever, sold - we had a store room that had stuff in there for the 6 years I worked there and never shifted - with one exception, and that was some fat, beardy, unsociable old fart (no, wasn't me) who used to come in once a month and buy a few kits. He eventually stopped, probably as he drank himself to death. Even when we stopped stocking them, and sold off old stock for 50p a kit, they still weren't shifting.
Well woke up this afternoon and it had stopped bubbling so i siphoned it into my barrel
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p72/wiggardywoo/029.jpg
My syphon has a u joint at the bottom so it leaves this gunk in the bucket
http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p72/wiggardywoo/030.jpg
Then i added 85 grams of sugar. I mixed it with a bit of hot water to make a syrup so it was easy to mix it with the beer.
Gave it a good mix and its back in the warm room for its second fermentation.

It will be in there for another couple of days before it gets moved to the garage :)
damn you!!!!! lol post me a bottle :d
getting a mix is the easy part, its the buckets and all that shizzle that is a pain. Will get onto google and find the stuff to make it.
Ill have a word with my mums BF
He has a home brewery, runs a business off it.
Makes a fapping MINT!!!!
Ran out of beer the other week, sold it all!!

its either going to be moonshine, or a puka microbrewery. Either way, lots of money to be had depending on how many forms you like to fill in lol

lol does anyone on here thats from the oooo arrr country (RJs land) ever get hold of any real farmers scrumpy? ive only had it once in the lakes when me and my mate went on a biking trip, i had 13 pints that night and the 1 that was scrumpy was stronger than the other 12 added together!
Its a fully legitimate business, so i assume it's all in order.
He sells to wholesalers and local pubs i believe.

just go to croyde... get some cripple cock scrumpy, drink the whole 4 pints & see how far down the beach you can walk in a straight line... that was basically my summer hols this year....
when i was 15, i made some ginger beer with yeast, root ginger, lemons & sugar. it fermented in a big tub, then was siphoned into bottles with the yeast. then as per the instructions, put it on a shelf with a heavy book on the top to keep the cork from blowing out... well, it was on the kitchen worktop, and after 3 days, there were eight encyclopaedia britannicas on the bottles, they were wedged to the wall units. all went well for the next 4 days till it was ready. then i managed to get a bottle out for the family to test.... it was ace, so we worked our way thru several more, till we heard an almighty bang.. my brother had took the last one out & got hit by the encyclopaedias.. we were all rat4rsed, and i went to school with a hangover for the first time ever.. great days.... we tried a caxton kit next, but it was crap, so we gave up
