View Full Version : Do I turbo my Jamacia Yellow sr?

I've just bought a turbo for the sr but the thing is the bay is going to have to be plated up for it and as she sits just now the turrets and inner wings etc are all original and a I guess once it's been plated there is no going back.

So question is do I go ahead and do it or just leave the xe in?

So its never been welded for the XE Conversion???

Sounds like you have made your mind up if you have bought the LET already!

Just the cut out for the alternator pulley, but nothing else has. I could sell the engine, think I'm 70% wanting to do it lol - just about to drive to Newcastle to pick it up...

Well either way, if you keep the XE or LET it the bay will need weldong before long or it will pull itself apart!

The xe has been in around 2 years and the joins are still solid - I was surprised, it really is solid up front. I have bought a plating kit though.

For peace of mind, i would weld it.

The conversion from XE to LET isnt simple though.

Being original is no help to it after its pulled itself apart :).

If I do it, it will be done over a bit of time, not rushed - want to get it right. Cheers for the info

whats the problems in the swap? i assumed it would be fairly easy as from what i can remember the blocks the same

I suspect the main part is the intercooler and radiator rather than fitting the engine.

As regards to the welding I'd get it done otherwise it will end in tears, I even welded my bay up just for piece of mind when putting my c16xe in.

F28 mounting
Intercooler/rad/pipework
new exhaust fab/routing

its not mega nails, but not as easy as first imagined!

Actually,

I'd pull it all out and put a 1.4 8v in on twin 40's. I think that car is too nice to be ruined. . . . .

Doing it to mine too, Better safe than sorry, As for the LET, Go for it. You only live once, Although it wont be for long if its a high power LET your putting in.

You need a f28 & diff if youre going to do it properly, thats anothe £1000, just for starters

My 1200 is all stitch welded at the front end lol .

I reckon a lot of it depends on your driving style.... I've seen a standard solid nova engine bay stress a little bit with only the weight of a smallblock. And that was a road car, driven more like a rally car though.

Its already been ruined by putting a 20xe. fitting a LET wont make any less origionl, just alot more fun (and problematic lol)

Do it

My point exactly. Why ruin a pretty original rare VGC car when you could just start with an average one? If you put a sensible engine in, like a 1.3 or 1.4 sr, it'll be slow but it'd sure have some serious class! . . If/when I do another Nova, it will be a slow one for sure! mk1, slammed, stripped, euro'd, wide wheels, stretched tyres, BBS etc but certainly slow with less than 1600cc!

Completely agree with this, if it has already been basterdised with an xe just let it and enjoy/worry about it

speaking as a let owner, get it done. :thumb:

if the shell has been modified for the xe then you might aswell let it, but if its all still original then i wouldnt do it because in the years to come finding an original SR will be hard and that one will be ruined. you can easy just swap the original engine back in and have it original again.

I've seen a few, not in yellow but they are there - White and red. Hey it's been cut for the xe and if anyone wants to offer a good price they can take it from me but I love the external look and even if it's let'd it will see at least another 5 yrs and can prob be made back to standard...

with a car like yours john theres no harm in putting a let/xe in you just have to make sure that its to a high standard done neatly and looking as good as the rest of the car.
