is the breather pipe from the block to the cam box needed on a 1600 8 valve rally engine?
mate bought a engine a while ago for a mk2 escort and the block has the pipe but the cam box doesnt so theres nowhere to fit the pipe to on the cam box

a pipe should come out of the block either into a canister and upto the airbox or the other one straight from the block into the cam carrier like u said, then re-circulate up out thru the cam cover, (8v vauxhalls anyway).

you could prob get away with sticking a small breather filter straight onto the pipe, but keep an eye on it, if oil is getting kicked up out of the filter, youll need to put some sort of secondary bottle or canister before the filter to act as a small reservoir to catch the oil. i could be chatting aload of fart tho.

Blocking it off will cause the crankcase pressure to rise & shag the bottom end.

Just get a cam/rocker cover with the correct breather port on it is the logical answer.

^ yeh u deffo need it, youll get big pressure build up without it and something will give. then oil will be like spill spill spill, were going to blackpool beach.

Cam box, swap one for another. Easy. Change the gasket at the same time.

you can get away without anything connected to the pipe, but best off givving it some sort of filter, it'll keep your engine oil cleaner and will lessen the chances of condensation/dew settling in with the oil. you can buy specific breather filters for that very thing, but there way too expensive if u ask me, you might get away with bodging something cheap yourself, like a square of easy-breath foam gaffa taped round the end of the pipe for example. it might sound a bit bodge, but im sure i put one of those small see-thru paper fuel filters on the end of one of these pipes years ago, in the direction of flow to filter the air, from what i can remember it did the business.
