View Full Version : Driving skills
Now I always thought I could drive my car well, But after going out in my mates car he showed me I couldn't.
Twas 1 am we came onto the slip road in second driving nicely as ya do he dips the clutch build some revs up clutch out and **** me its off like a rocket, 3rd gear clutch down builds some revs up and its off again etc etc hits a instant ban speed no problem and each gear change was quick, I was quite impressed with the way he drove it so well, Never seen some one drive a car like this, Of course I don't recomend people doing this and I'm not bragging.
Just looking for some advice on how to drive properly for when I take my car to a track as if I drive my car on a track how I thought was a good standard I will be beaten by everything.
You done any track days before??
I'd take the first few pretty easy just to get used to being on track, and remember its not a race, so it doesn't matter who or what passes you.

I haven't done a track day as such but I have driven a Porsche and a Ginetta G20 round croft, Birthday present thing.
so he stuck the clutch in & revved it up then dumped the clutch out.... in the meantime losing momentum, but the revs & shock loading of the car makes it feel fast.... if it was worth doing, then real racing drivers would do it...........keeping the revs up & learning when to change gear at the best rev point will be faster, and it won't wreck the clutch...

IMHO as always the best way to be a cracking driver is teaching yourself everybody drives differantly and you need to no weather to risk it or back off.
learn from your own mistakes and dont make stupid ones
build up your confidence and learn when the car is on the edge
or just take classes etc

No not really as it was all so quick, Can't really explain it as right now I'm a tad tipsy and its hard to explain just how he did it.

106 Rallye, He always talks about how good it is and how much has been spent on it (by the previous owner) but all he talks about is the "high lift cams" it has.

I agree everyone drives differently and I know my limits that's for sure, A couple of close calls taught me my limits and since then I have been a lot more road considerate.
As you will know your self you know what you are comfortable with doing and can feel when you car doesn't like something, I don't push my car hard on the roads but I can feel it well if you know what I mean.

i sure do ive had close calls with roundabouts loosing the front end and locking the brakes up but knew how to control it and since have been a little easier with her but i think you can be pointed in the right direction but just build up your confidence and dont take to many steps at once and im sure you will be just fine

i used to gear change from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th without taking my foot off the throttle in my corsa turbz, just bang the clutch down fast punch it into gear then off the clutch, it takes seconds and you dont loose boost :)
not realy great on the clutch i shouldnt think. :)

Lol but that's a high performance car and the power is there in every gear, Compared to a NA smallblock.
Gear changes? Pfft. Torque FTW :d
broken gearbox FTL though

So he drove it quickly in a straight line whilst doing a bad impression of double declutching up through the gears?
It sounds like alll your mate was doing was prematurely wearing out his clutch and putting strain on everything else! You might do well to pay no attention, he doesn't sound all that mechanically sympathetic and you'll break your car eventually repeating that trick mate.
