is the 1.6 block out of a cav or astra the same as the 1.6 gsi/gte?

Certainly mk3 astras would be a C16SE, so the later GSI engine.

should be stamped on the block c16se

I've used a 16SV block with 16SE everything else, ran fine but not sure if it's 100% exactly the same.

debatable, but majority on here and elsewhere would say smallblock

iainel, another 16sv user !

i got a question for you if you read this thread again:

- theres a 2 pin sensor on the back of the block, is that a knock sensor or something ? seems a bit weird to have something like that on a carb engine, but the 16sv is a bit of a hybrid engine so wouldnt put it past it.

Some early 1.6s are big block, there totaly different to the small block ones. Old cavs and stuff iirc.

Sorry I don't remember it in detail as it was a while ago! And I think I eventually swapped it to a 16SE block to match the rest of the engine due to loss of oil pressure.

dont see why it wont fit, should be fine.
is it a 1.6 spi engine from a mk.3 cav ?

and you wanna use the bottom end right ? and slap injection head & gubbins on the top ?

it'll either be spi or an older carb model.
either way, yeh it'll fit, slap it on when youve got time :thumb:

if you havent done anything crazy like this before, youll need a bunch of bits like head gasket set, new head bolts. waterpump and cambelt well worth replacing while your there. might possibly have to rig up an external fuel pump depending on what youve got. bottom rad hose possibly might need some customizing depending on which L-shaped coolant pipe you have. other coolant pipes might need too. throttle cable youll need the gsi job. wiring in the ecu is probably the trickiest bit. good luck, hope it goes good :thumb:
