http://www.pngclub.com/forum/images/icons/icon1.gif My wheel refurb....comments welcome
well after i picked up a set of grey speedlined off gordon livesy (cheers gordon) the refurb had to be done as the colour did not go with my car.
so i got the wheels like this:
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/incanova/car036-1.jpg
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/incanova/car037.jpg

then i began sanding them down and filling and blemishes.:
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/incanova/car045.jpg

then they were primed, wet & dried and primed again:
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/incanova/car041.jpg
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/incanova/car040.jpg
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/incanova/car042.jpg

wet & dried again then on went the appliance gloss white (3 coats):
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/incanova/car044-1.jpg
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/incanova/car043-1.jpg

i then done the same with another and left to dry for a couple of hours:
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/incanova/car047.jpg

and then the laquer:
http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/incanova/car054-1.jpg

Tip: take your time when applying top coats and laquer. its harder to get runs out of these where as primer can be rubbed down easily:thumb:

What do i need to sand them down with?

Can someone do a more in-depth guide for complete novices please?

Benn

80 grit any way you'll be filling.
180 grit to rub down the knackered paint bits.

800 grit to flat the primer.

If you really feel the need to 1500 grit to the polish up.

Whats the rough cost off doing a full set? Ive been reading that materials are about 40quid per wheel. which isnt alot less then getting them done pro.

40quid max maybe for all 4.

well the cost of doing mine was:

180 sandpaper - 30p
1200 sandpaper - 30p

anthracite aerosols x2 - 3.50 each so 7 quid
lacquer aerosol - 3.50

and polish what i already had.

so mine come to 11 pounds and 10 pence, and half a days work.

Didnt you prime?

If imm doing a dark colour, ie black/athracite. do i not need to prime?

Lewi, any pics of alloys on your car?

And a full set in less than a day?

Benn

You primer to cover sanding marks/filler.

And a full set in less than a day?

It really depends on the condition of the wheels. If they are not corroded and there has been no bubbling of the paint but it has some minor scratches/kerbing and the paint has faded then it can be done withing a couple days, as you would only really need to clean/rub down to make it all smooth, filler the scratches/kerbing then paint.

If, on the other had, you have wheels that have corroded and paint has bubbled up, kerbing/scratches paint peeling this would mean you'd have to strip off all paint and that takes ages, trust me. Took me about 8 hours to strip one wheel of all paint.

Benn

With the right tools yes, you can do 4 in a day.

Nova_Tek
25-12-09, 04:04 PM
Yes like an acid dip/bead blasting. If I had that 1 day would have been enough. But if it's nitromoorse and a wire attachment expect much more.

Benn
25-12-09, 07:51 PM
Sanding them down on a da is enough. The paint comes of quickly with a bit of 180.

I done all mine in about 2 hours.

and this is the only picture of them on the car, until i get it back out of the impound :(

Going down first thing tuesday morning, a friend with traders insurance and a recovery truck is coming. Hope this works out well cos i would end up in tears if i had to leave my car there. learned a good lesson from this carry on.
