No not the "What do I need to take with me"

Mate changed the rear drums and shoes for me, All well and good until I tried the handbrake, Before the rears were changed it would hold the car on 5 clicks, Now it goes up to 11  and well it does hold the car on a bank but I can drive with it on, Is this a definite fail?

And oh what do I need to take with me?

tighten the handbrake cable at the rear axle point.

Rusted like ****, MOT is 10:30am today, I have never done it before and would probably loosen it.

tightening usually is to the right i think unless it's a reverse thread

Failed on, And I quote

"Nearside front (strut top) suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded". In the year I have had the car I had never noticed this as it is a hidden area and some one had tried to patch it up and failed.

"(drivers) Seat belt stitching badly frayed"

"Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive" - New cat then, And could that cause the car to drink fuel?

first slacken off handbrake cables , just incase they have been over tightened in the past , located on the rear axel (threaded bar and nut )
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r76/novaturbo_album/PICT0072b.jpg

then grease / oil the plastic runners on the ends of the rear axel were the cables run through ( can cause sticking sometimes and also the cables wear from rubbing at this point
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r76/novaturbo_album/PICT0073.jpg

then remove split pin / nut / washer , and outer bearing and pull drum off (only do one side at a time leave the drum on the other side so that when come to adjust brakes and cable is pulled it wont alter adjustment on the other side ,

http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r76/novaturbo_album/PICT0074.jpg
once drum is off inspect the inside of the drum , there will usually be a lip formed round the edge were the shoes have worn the drum slightly , use course emery paper or similar and give this lip a good rub down , the more of this lip you can remove the better you can adjust the brakes l8tr
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r76/novaturbo_album/PICT0081.jpg
ok when looking at the brake shoes you will notice on the upper half there is a metel threaded bar linking the shoes together if you look closer you will see there is a toothed wheel threaded on this bar and looking close at this wheel you will see its teethy are shaped to rotate in one direction ther is also a metel clip that sits against this wheel to stop it rotating the other way , this is were u need to adjust the brakes ,
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r76/novaturbo_album/PICT0078.jpg

carefully place a flat bladed screwdriver behind the teeth on the threaded wheel and turn the toothed wheel on the threaded bar (remember check shape of teeth on wheel to see which way wheel turns ) you should hear it click against the stopper as you turn , try doing three clicks then replace drum pull handbrake couple of times to centralise shoes and whilst holding bearing in place spin drum and check there is no rubbing on shoes continue this process untillshoes can just ever so slightly be felt on drum but drum spins freely ,

if you over adjust dont worry just remove drum and with one hand pull rtaining clip away from toothed wheel and with screwdriver turn toothed wheel back a slight bit then place drum on pull handbrake and recheck adjustment

once happy put drum on (no need to put bearing bk yet cos will need to take off l8tr ) then repeat the above process for the other rear brake ,

once happy both brakes are adjusted properly remove both rear drums, (at this point remember dont pull hand brake or press brake pedel of all that adjusting uve just done will have to be done again ) with both drums removed scratch a line or mark with a pen were the handbrake arm sits in the off position then slowly tighten the handbrake cable on the bar in middle of rear axel untill the handbrake arms on the rear shoes just start to move then back off slightly till there back to the marks you made when they are fully released then refit drums adjust bearing etc fit wheel and try handbrake , check it feels good then release and spin wheels check there is no binding and wheel is able to spin freely with no sticking , job done
