View Full Version : I'm back! And with a new project...SRi track car

OK it's been a while, I haven't been on here in years infact! But i've taken on a new project in the form of my brothers old SRi. It's been off the road for 2 years so is now full of rust and in need of a little restoration.

Plans are;

- Weld up sills and floor pan
- Get the shell as good as I can, then respray (not sure what colour yet)
- Put back to standard SRi (externally)
- Stripped interior, buckets seats, polycarb windows, fibre glass panels

Then once all the essentials are done and it's back in roadworthy condition....a C20LET conversion :)

Here's how it looked back in 2005'ish;

As you can see there's a fair bit of work to do. There's also a fair amount of rust, but i've seen worse. Plans for tomorrow are;

- Buy some 3mm sheet metal
- Self-teach myself how to weld
- Get cracking!

The holes in the floor pan will be easy enough to weld up. I think the sills will be a bit more of a challenge but i'm sure i'll cope. I want to plough on with it as I don't want it just sitting on my driveway for the next 2 years, so should keep the updates coming daily :cool:

3mm sounds like overkill to fix that rust, but good luck learning to weld, you'll learn to love it!

not a bad sri to be honest by look of it, it has same bad spots as mine lol apart from mine has basically no front slam panel when i removed it it was full of expanding foam, il be keeping an eye on thread with the plans not far off what im doing with my sri.

I had a look through your post mate looks good :thumb: I just want mine for a bit of fun really. A lot of the guys i work with arrange track days quite often and I thought the Nova would be perfect. I liked your DIY rear strut brace, might give that a go myself!

iainel, if 3mm is overkill would you use 2mm? It's all a learning curve for me, i've never welded in my life!! Obviously i'll be doing lots of practising before touching the car. I've got myself a Cebora Mig welder, mask, gloves, Argon/CO2 gas, 0.6mm welding wire, just need the sheet metal and i'm away! Should be interesting :d

Yeah it has been a while! In fact, since my Nova Gsi i've owned;

- 2.0 Omega
- 3.0 Omega MV6
- Mk2 Rev1 MR2 T-bar
- 1.4 Corsa Sri
- E36 BMW 325i
- Audi A3 tdi sport
- Mk2 Rev5 MR2 T-bar
- Mk2 Rev2 MR2 GT T-bar Turbo
- 2.5 Ford Mondeo Ghia x
- And now as my second car back to a 1993 Nova Sri!!

So yeah haven't been on here for a while. I see there's some people still on here that were on here when i left *cough* Burgo *Cough* lol

Electric window loom and switches should be out soon although the rust is my priority. I'll let you know when i get it all out :thumb:

I've been thinking about colour....maybe yellow could be cool. I've always wanted a bright yellow car. It does however ruin the standard look, but it will have the original bumpers/kit.

If you're practising then any thickness will do I guess, but you'd be better eventually learning on some thinner stuff that's closer to the thickness of a Nova (from my experience). Nearer 1mm than 2 I think?!

dunova
27-07-09, 09:52 PM
1mm?! :eek: Well you probably know better than i do, I just thought that 1mm sounds a tad thin to use on the sills? I suppose the metal on the Nova is pretty thin, it's better to use the same thickness then? So the weld is better?

dunova
28-07-09, 07:23 PM
Ok didn't get loads done today thanks to the great British summer :roll:

I'm trying to source a new fuel pump and failing miserably. Went to a couple of breakers today and they haven't had any Nova's in years. May have to splash out on a new one on fleabay....

I got my sheet metal (0.9mm off-cuts) from an engineering firm, £5 for the lot! That also included some tubular stuff for a rear strut brace.

Got the waxoil out and got a bit carried away;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/DSC00528.jpg

This hole i've got in the front passenger side footwell is right above a beam running underneath so i can't access it from beneath the car. What's my best bet for this? Weld a plate over the top of it? Or just fill it in (body filler) now i've wax oiled it? I thought a welded plate would be better but filler would be neater.

I think the cats had enough of the British summer too, he decided to stay in and kick back;

30-07-09, 08:49 PM
Thanks mate I hope it is too. I'm hoping once i've de-rusted the shell the waxoyl will look after it for a little while!!

Progress made today;

- Taught myself how to weld, turns out it's not that easy!

My practice sheets;

God awefull;

But started to improve;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/DSC00558.jpg

Prepped the hole in my floor pan;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/Image087.jpg

Welded a plate on and then covered in waxoyl!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/Image090.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/Image089.jpg

I know my weldings terrible but it's not structural so thought it was a good place to start and practice.

Couple of pics as she stands;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/DSC00552.jpg

As i'm not overly confident in my welding ability i've decided to get my girlfriends dad to do the sills as he's been a stainless steel welder for over 40 years, result :cool: It was good having a practice though and i'm going to do the rear strutbrace myself so i'll learn eventually. Just didn't want to cock up the sills as that'd be a pain in the ass.

Coming along though :)

UPDATE

Ok I haven't got loads to update....but i have got a little bit done. I removed the doorcards (hadn't got round to that until today), smoothed over the repair on the passenger side footwell, removed the front bumper support beam and painted a couple of bits with a zinc based rust-proof primer;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/DSC00599.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/DSC00598.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/DSC00597.jpg

The plan for today was to get the welding done on the sills. Initially i was just going to patch the current sills, but after having a good look i'm just going to replace both sides. New sills will be ordered tomorrow and with me by Tuesday, so just got to wait for some sunshine to get cracking!

Once the sills are done, the next steps are;

- Get fuel pump fitted (old one died)
- Get s/s magnex exhaust fitted (may do this tomorrow)
- Sort out the wiring on the rear lights for MOT
- Buy bucket seats and fit
- Get the suspension sorted (currently has -60mm springs on the rear and standard springs on the front!

And with all that done it should be road worthy :)

Blame the previous ghey kit!

Looking well mate, practice practice practice with the welder! Gotta agree with Mike, looks like a gasless job? Get yourself a decent hobby welder dude, 130a will be more than enough for the job.

calibra-keith
02-08-09, 10:57 PM
coming on bud :thumb: i could do with new sills how much and were you get yours from ?

dunova
02-08-09, 10:59 PM
Yes the towing eye can be blamed on the previous jap kit :(

And no it's not a gasless welder how dare you!! lol I did practise without gas though just to get the hang of it.

My better halfs dad came round today and gave me a welding lesson. He welds stainless steel for a living and has 40 years experience so that was pretty usefull :) He got my welder setup properly for me as well and my welds are coming out loooooooooooads better! He said i need different welding wire for the sills (mine currently has flux core stuff in it). Mine's a 130 amp mig welder, he said it is a little bit hot even on the lowest setting for what i'm welding but should be ok.

Welding's great fun though, enjoyed it much more when i laid a decent weld today :cool:

How old are you??

Progress today;

- Stripped some more stuff (Carpets, sound deadening in the back)
- Found another lovely hole in the spare wheel well
- Removed the sunroof to eye up how i'm going to fill the space

Plan for the sunroof is to buy some clear or black acrylic sheet, cut to the right shape, remove sunroof, screw the acrylic down into place using some DIY brackets and then seal.

I thought about welding in a plate but it wont look that great (wont be curved) and it's more weight! It would be more rigid though...

Ordered the new sill skins today, should be with me by Wednesday :d

+rep for putting it back to standard, this will be a beauty when finished :thumb:
jokes cat too.

dunova
05-08-09, 02:28 PM
I'm not 100% sure what to do with it at the moment tbh. Obviously interiors going to be stripped and i want to get the weight down (i'm not going mental about it though).

For the exterior i was thinking of;

- keeping it black, badged up with the original decals and having grey vinyl down the sides and grey bumpers

- Going black all over, no vinyl but keeping original decals

- keeping it black, badged up with the original decals and having an anthracite colour down the sides and anthracite bumpers. I think this might not look great on a black car though?

The other thing i wasn't sure about is weather or not to get a gsi front bumper or keep it standard?

Fuel pump arrived today and is now fitted. Still waiting for sills to arrive....i'm hoping they'll arrive today but it's looking increasingly unlikely.

dunova
05-08-09, 02:30 PM
Just to add....I could go away from the black theme lol and go for a complete change.

I've always fancied a bright yellow, but that's really going away from the standard look.

Progress today

Sills arrived yesterday

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/DSC02427.jpg

Stipped wings and doors off ready for new sills, bottom hinge pins were a right pain in the ass

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/DSC02431.jpg

New sill welded up on drivers side :) (not by me i might add)

Just need to flat back the welds and blend into the bodywork now. Didn't get round to doing the passenger side but it's all prepped ready to go. Hopefully get that done on Sunday.

Fuel pump now fitted from a 16v Calibra. Next jobs are passenger sill, smooth and blend all bodywork and prep for paint. Oh yeah and polycarb sunroof and windows.

Definately more work than i first thought.....

Tell me about it! I'll be getting them covered in a heavy layer of zinc primer asap lol

I've been keeping an eye on your mate it's coming on really well. I had my sunroof out the other day, weighs a fair bit! Mine's coming out and being replaced with a polycarb sheet, nice and light :cool:

Liking the roll cage in yours. Is yours just having 1 bucket seat??

Can't wait to get the other sill on and get the bodywork sorted.

Been a little while since i updated last! Not looking loads different, but both sills are now welded. I've also rubbed back the inner front wings and sprayed with a zinc based primer;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/DSC02483.jpg

Next on my to do list is;

-Weld both front chassis legs (both need rust removing and a small plate welding in)

-I've found a small hole in the passenger inner sill (not sure what to do with this yet)

-The passenger rear arch needs a plate welding above the new sill and blending in

Once the weldings done I can get on with the bodywork; blending and prepping for spraying :)

I've changed my mind about the standard sri look....nothing chavvy or in bad taste. Think i'll be keeping it under wraps until it's done anyway, so i can give you all a shock :d I'm sure it'll get some mixed reactions.

Cheers guys it’s always nice to get a bit of encouragement :thumb:

It’s quite weird being back on here but hasn’t really changed a lot! I’d quite like to change my username tbh as I was only 17 when I registered and chose a pretty terrible username.....is that possible or am i stuck with it?

As you've probably noticed from some of the pics I haven't got a garage. I may therefore be getting one of these bad boys!

Perfect spray booth that is. I might go for a more sturdy one though and pay more.

I really want to get the chassis legs welded this week but it keeps bloody raining....

Got a fair bit of prep done today, firstly cleaned up the inside of the wings and zinc primered;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/DSC02514.jpg

Then did a bit more blending on the sills;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/DSC02519.jpg

And finally, sanded the whole car using 240grit wet & dry;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/DSC02515.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/DSC02516.jpg

Need to whip the rear bumper back off as they're being painted seperately. Next steps to get done before i can paint it;

-Get the sills completely blended
-Still need to do a minor repair on the passenger rear arch and smooth in
-remove bee sting aerial and smooth over

Then it's a case of masking off, removing bits such as glass and lights, then cracking on with the painting :d

Next steps;

- Finish smoothing drivers side rear sill

Why are you not fitting new rear arches while you're there?

Looks good. athough i think you should have got arch repair panels put on,

as by looks of it youve just fibreglassed over the rust and reconstructed the arch...

will last 6 months ish before it starts showing...

looks good other than that, id reconsider it if i was you tbh

The shells just not good enough tbh. It's had plenty of welding in the past and still needs more underneath. I've decided not to take it too seriously now, i'm just going to use it to take round the track and have a bit of fun in.

If the shell was in better nick then i would have spent more time on it and done everything a bit more properly....

Cheers guys :)

Got myself some black Corbeau buckets and harnesses today. Fully recliners so i'll still have a bit of comfort for road use :cool:

I'm afraid to say it's definately not going to be black! But i'll be keeping the colour scheme under wraps until the day of the great unveiling.....

I hope your removing the glass and everything before paint!

Otherwise it dont seem too bad, seems a shame to have so much filler on it, might have keept it on the road a bit longer, by the end of next year your be wanting to break/scrap it.

dunova

Yeah all the glass will be taken out before i paint it.

I had to use filler to blend the weld lines on the rear sills. I'm only expecting to give it a couple more years tbh at which time i'll be looking for a mint shell. This one's far from the best and has had too much work done on it in the past to justify trying to make it mint...it was going to the scrapper before i had it anyway so atleast i'm giving it a bit more life.

any updates?

ooookay so it's been quite a while! The icey cold weather and moving house can be thanked for that.

Things and plans have changed quite a lot but some progress has been made. I've come to realise that the whole car has seen better days and corrosion really is getting the better of it. I think it's too far down the line to return to original (with my knowledge/ability) and with that in mind i've decided to get some fun out of it (track days) this year and then it may well be tiime to find a decent shell.

So here's how it stood before painting;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/TSC00028.jpg

I then put up a large gazebo and used it as a spray booth :d Not ideal I know but you've got to work with what you've got......and i sprayed it.......YELLOW :cool:

That was last year at my old house. I then decided to add some white and it now currently stands like this - Just trying to stop a blow on my manifold-downpipe joint and charging up the battery;

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/tezray/Project%20Nova/20100320_004.jpg

Front bumper alignment's rubbish and the grill needs painting white to follow the bonnet lines :roll:

Next jobs include;
-Buying and fitting new suspension/coilovers
-Fitting new fuel pump (current one is whining)
-Lots and lots of waxoyl!!!
-Then it's MOT time :eek:

All comments are welcome! I realise it wont be to everyone's taste....should be good fun around the track though and if anyone's going to combe on April 24th for the action day i'll catch you there :thumb:

Just spotted this thread and 1st i'd like to say good effort on just getting on with learning how to weld!
Wish i did that.
2nd I liked the progress till you sprayed it white and yellow. lol
Sorry it's just not to my taste at all but if you like it fair enough :)
Can't wait to see some more progress and welcome back to NovaLoad/PNG btw lol
