well im a mechanic to trade but all the painters near me are ****s or you cant get a hold of them so **** it ill do it myself. 2k is good, but is a bit too plastic looking for me. and to use water based stuff its the cost of getting ovens etc to dry it, and i believe they use different guns. will try get pics up of my work lol.....

we paint with water based every day and dont use ovens mate. once we move to a bigger unit we will use one but for doing pannels or bumpers we dry the paint off with a heat gun :thumb:

agreed but the unit we are in just now is a bit small. we do have an oven but cant fit it. we just keep the booth really clean and wet the floor for the moment:thumb:

I painted a vw polo with rattle cans, and lacquered it aswell.

then just flattened the whole car down with some 2000 and polished it.

Why???

LEWI007
27-07-09, 10:02 PM
Because. the 2 of us are only 17, make VERY little money, have alot of time, and i can paint.

it only cost us about 50 quid or something to spray that car. and its a nice job as you can see. was hard work wet sanding the thing down though.

and the 50 quid went into buying rattle cans.

Alot of the time celly with reactivate when you spray 2pac over the top cause of the thinners in it, causing it to crack and bubble or even just not set.

MK99 - It was bad because you used 280, thats WAY too rough it will scratch it, you need 1200 or 2000 wet and dry.

G-Nova ive emptied my box now.

It wasn't finished with 280, and yes 280 scratched it, it scratched the sandpaper like dry as hell crap off the top, then it was taken down with 400 wet, 800 wet, 1000 wet, 1200 wet, 1500 wet and then finally 2000 wet and then a quick layer of SRP to make sure it will shine when it's machine polished properly...

What the funk? You couldnt flat paint to be polished with anything lower than 1200. For one anything under 1000grit isnt finishing paper.

If seen stuff painted by brush thats been flatted with 800. But that was brush painted!

Srp wont do bugger all either. You need a proper cutting compound.

Guess I should have taken photo's of it lol it was started with something as harsh as 280 as it literally felt like sand paper, a couple of quick passes with that took most of the seriously 'grainy' bits off the top and then it was slowly taken down with higher and higher grades until you could actually flat it off with 1200+ Would have been there for weeks starting with 1200... srp won't 'do' the job no, but it does give some sort of indication of whether or not it's ready for a mop.

We're not talking perfecting an almost glossy out of the gun finish here, that was my point. This would have been smoother brushed on probably. This was paint dryer than the hottest point in the sahara.

There's no enough paint on that. Thats the prob.

280 would sand off any lacquer that you put on, if no lacquer thats one prob and 280 would sand the base coat off, 1000grit will take lacquer off, well 1500 will if used wrong.

You can sand the dryest of paint finish off and that inc big runs off with 1200 and make it flat as glass. i've seen 800 try to be poilshed back up.. It was bad and needed to be repainted.

MK999
28-07-09, 10:41 PM
in the most part it's started to gloss up with a quick coat of SRP, I'll let you know how it comes out after mopping up, but it seems fine to me. Dunno where we're missing each other here but even the 1200 wet and dry I was using would take a good 10-20seconds of hard sanding to take the base coat off an edge. I'm assuming you do all your flatting by hand?

Benn

Cant beileve you used anything as ruff on it as that, check again. Will be intrested to see the pics.
