Just about to put my engine back together (1.3 8v), and noticed that the old head bolts have some pretty fat washers on them. The new bolts I've bought didn't come with any and theres no mention of using them in the haynes or autodata manuals, so are you supposed to use washers or not?

Measure the new bolts against the old, will need to swap them over to the new bolts.

The new bolts are the same size as the old ones, so I should use the washers?

Sorry to bump so soon, but I could do with a definitive answer on this so I can get the car done today. I realise it might be obvious, but I don't want to mess this up and have another gasket leak!

Wouldn't using washers affect the torque settings required?

yes you need to use the old washers with the new bolts.
