Thought I might try and keep a general thread goin on some off the goings on down my unit

Me and my mate's are all ways playing with something whether its a landrover, VW, the odd powerful cars like my old cosworth. what every we own really. most off its vauxhall tho so here goes....

current project:

me and my mate Russ got a little bored on the evening waiting for the everyone to get ready for the night out on the town (females ovb) when we were in N.Ireland watchin the N.W 2000 so ended up buying a 43000mile 5door nova saloon off egay. the plan was to use all the spare parts up in the unit and put a C20XE in, its just for a bit of fun and to use up all the parts lying around holding up my projects!!

ow and my spelling is terrible, so I will try my best before people pick fault pics speak a thousand words...

Sent a friend to pick it up on his flatbed for us from swindon and here it is:
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q203/stuartp741/13062009160.jpg (http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q203/stuartp741/13062009160.jpg)
its a 1.2 merit had plenty of history with it. Its nice and solid with a little arch rot on the rears but that will be sorted in good time.

I dint take many photos whilst we prepped the bay due to the poor light at night but the engine bay got the usual stitch welding and preperation.

up-rated to a bigger servo (GSi)

I ended up with this engine a few years ago out of a cav, I bought it for the f20 gearbox for my 3dr nova when it spat the diff out. £80 the lad wanted for it when i arrived, mind you it had sat in his front garden for 6 months. basiclly it was bare engine/gearbox sitting on a subframe.

so stripped it down ready for putting in the nova, checked the compression which was good across the board
then fitted new cam belt kit, water pump, 8v baffle plate, had the bottom pulley turned down to single pulley for clearence.

ready to go in:
note: my unit is 30 square meters plus and i couldn't find a oil filler cap for **** (found 6 rocker covers tho)

in from the bottom FTW
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q203/stuartp741/09072009021.jpg (http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q203/stuartp741/09072009021.jpg)

the competion mounts where a bitch to line up plus we never had longer bolts for the rear gearbox mount, why on earth did vauxhall change the pitch on the rear mounts/to car bolts? still got to get that fitted.

but got it nicely in place:
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q203/stuartp741/09072009025.jpg (http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q203/stuartp741/09072009025.jpg)

a few of the lads come down to lend a hand

russell fitting the fuel tank/pump and new copper fuel line.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q203/stuartp741/11072009044.jpg (http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q203/stuartp741/11072009044.jpg)

I should off took more pics but I all ways seem to get carried away when i start something so never find time.

slesser one of mates managed to hobble around on his crutches taking a few pics tho bless. he's broke his tib and fib above his ankle, it happended at moto x. the front wheel washed out on him on a left hander. that never caused any injury it was the lad behind him riding over his leg that broke ithttp://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif he was doining really well aswell, moved up to 7th place in the UK championships overall. so he's got a £6000 cage wrapped round his ankle for 5 months. managed to get airlifted to hospital tho.

he's pi**ed of because he wonts to have a play in saloon.

rought spec.
omex launch controll. switch is nicely fitted to the wiper stalk
alloy competion engine mounts
eccentric (sp) top mounts
ATE brakes
braided brake lines
g-max coil overs up front
60mm springs and g-max rear dampners (there's no way Im fitting my Gaz suspension when this lot was sitting on a shelf)
side exit exhaust
15" comp mo's

Had a right game trying to get the tracking some where near so it could be drove to the garage to be tracked properly.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q203/stuartp741/15072009049.jpg (http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q203/stuartp741/15072009049.jpg)

Il get some more picture of the top mounts fitted and the rest of it when I can.

still a few little things to be done and changed but we managed to take it up hams hall (chav racing circut) saturday. it chased a few cars and over took a few so all in all it done well. the back box is restricting it quite alot so thats on the list to be changed.

and as for the cheat box (launch control) thats brilliant. wiped a few smiles of peoples faces.

feel free to pass (positve) comments and advice. after all were all human so some people might think differntly to somethings. this is only a hobby to me and my mate Russ. im a site manager and he's a farmer/coal man/fabricated/hirer of canel barge plant/vinyl sign fitter you name it he does it.

she's a right sleeper. best to date was againts some chavs in a rs2000 they were laughting at us when they over took us on the by pass. they soon stopped when dropped it down a gog out the irland and lost them down the straight.

done a little on it tonight moved the launch control switch from the indicator stalk to the wiper stalk its loads better now. i can hold it whilst grabbin 2nd gear. fitted some sri clocks we needed a rev counter, tidyed a little wiring up in the engine bay with some heat strink and waterproof connections to make it a little more factory fit.

ow and the bull at russes work decided to basically headbutt another cow through the fence onto the drivers side wing. so weve gotta get a new wing lol

ow yes its only cost service parts so far. its had two oil changes in less then 200miles. i never trust a engine thats had any part took of for a long period of time even if its the crank sensor. it gets run for a few minutes when first started then changed:d

we aint even had to buy brake pads because we had a some nice new ones lying around. :thumb:

got the uprated rear gear box mount on tonight. it was a right bitch to fit. I slackended all the bolts of on the front two mounts inc mount to block to allow the engine to move about suspended it of a engine hoist, and it still needed to be pulled forward towards the radiator so used a ratchet strap on the engine to the valance to pull it forward. crappy vauxhall tolaronces (sp) got it on in the end and its amazing how better and differnt it feels compared to driving around on 2 uprated mounts lol.

couldn't resist taking this pic.

3000kg bora 200BHP vs 50kg nova 150BHP lol I dont know the real figures on weights and BHP but they compete well on the B roads.:thumb:

I've had a unbelievable amount of projects and interesting cars through the unit since updating, I own 16 ATM and have four novas in there at the min haha sad really! Il sort some pics and what not of the rally car when I get chance could be a while but on answer with the question it's a x16xe corsa engine, derestricted inlet manifold (don't like calling it a power inlet manifold) phil-prad racing exhaust and manifold, and ewp so no mechanical water pump sapping power off the cambelt. Top and rebuild gaskets changed through out. That's it on the engine loads of other nice touch like wrc style sil stands, custome wirring loom yatar yatar! Had it running the other day forth atempt with in five min due to someone not to mention coz put the flow fuel line on the return! But it's getting there!

I'm going to try and keep this up to date . but il put this weeks progress up on the rally car.

Basically its a family team for the rallying. Two brothers, one drives one navigates, the cousin me does the spanners. The engine is standard, gearbox f15 gripper LSD 60/40 that's where the troubles at...
Mid April whilst at Mira on the heart of England championship. Ss1 5mtr of the start line the n/s CV snapped. We was worried before we even turning a wheel because when I test drove it a few days before I broke a joint but the inner potjoint. So after that fail at Mira i spat my dummy out and set about fitting the pilbeam wishbones and big blocking the drive drain.

Had a ball ache with the second hand pilbeam set up. have you ever tried getting a 3\4" unf left hand tap on a Saturday night. I have so Jason the car owner went on a road trip the Sunday to pick one up of a old boy who had it listed on eBay. One of the adjustable arms had a badly damaged thread. So got that cleaned and re tapped. But wasn't happy with the rewelded repair on the other one so got the threaded inserts out with the aid of a lathe and made new arms plus a new right handed insert. Had to turn some spacers and top hat washers up to fit the nova and loads of other stuff just get everything to neutrally align with positive and negative adjustment.

So that was last weekend, on the Monday morning I had the day of because thne nova was booked into centre of gravity for a full geo setup. The morning started with me fitting a temp gearbox and as much back on the car before dinner. Basically the car needed to be at its normal condition ie weight and fluid levels, note at this point the diff still wasn't back from gripper so no drive shafts fitted. Got it there in time and assisted the owner of centre of gravity set the car up. Amazing what can be learnt when someone takes time to explain things and also takes pride not only in his work but his workshop  £27.000 for two ramps I didn't ask how much the four computers and lasers were. His ballast weights are Porsche brake discs because he like them, they don't rust.

The car weight in at 849kg with full fluids and both driver and navigator. 0.5degree toe out about 1mm on a 15" rim. 2degrees camber and 2.2 castor on the front the rear wasn't adjusted due to me not getting the new disk converted beam on yet but were only doing one rally on it then taken it back to be shimmed etc etc. So then Tuesday we had the phone call to say the f13/15 LSD diff was ready for collection with f20 internals ready for big block pot joints. So Thursday night re built the bearing and cage and made a three tooth tools so its easier to re install the diff lock nut that normally gets tighten with a peace of 3mm Flat steel across two teeth and a hammer lol even welded a spare 32mm castle but on it. Friday night seen the complete reassembly of the gear box whilst cleaning every last bit before silicone gasketting. Took the temp box of and installed the original one. Called it a night at that as it was 11pm and I had all ready done 12hr shift that day. Saturday and today i got the "2.0 nova conversion shafts" dry fitted they're off a old nova I broke for parts they've got "vaux developments" scribbled on them any info?? I say dry fitted because i wanted to check the plunge on the pot joint wasn't over stretching or compressing to much.

right after a bit of searching about on here and mig for HOW TO MEASURE PLUNGE on a driveshaft with no luck. I just thought stop been thick stuart and work it out, lol so measured how much travel the normal shock goes up before hitting the bump stops, bolted a springless shock on the car and trolly jacked the hub up to said measurement. this effectively is when the pot joint needs to be at its longest length "positive" with wheels pointing straight, then I turned the steering lock to lock and checked how much of the internals where out of the pot joint and compared it to one I had off the car was happy with all of this and the negative plunge when the drive shafts were horizontal with each other. but I made a washer up for both sides to sit between the cv and hub bearing just for peace of mind.

some off you may seen I was asking about rear spat extensions or some sort of plastic arch to fit on the rear of the car, anyway that never happened. its been to a body shop and had some hand made slightly wide arches welded on about 20mm. so that's sorted the issue of the wet tyres destroying them self's aswell as the outer arches. all so got the drive train sorted now. the nova is sporting a set of corsa b 2.0 driveshafts off lmf. this has stopped the car eating cvs and pjs. its done a few rallys with this set up and a fun day at our local dis used coal pit with not a single problem will up loads of photos soon.

the sleeved sections (black cables) are off a clio. I machined the steel ferrules to suit the clios plastic ones and the reason I opted for clio cables the plastic ferrules can be pulled off enabling me to cut the sleeve section down to suit then simply slip back without having to worry about and snacks damaging the wire. worked well.

im going to weld a 12mm washer onto the cable backet on the caliper so the ferrule clips in just as it does on the clio you can just see it shinning on the second photo up. as for the joining of the os cable to the front section on the car that will be took care of by this

the idea works in my head any way. if it was running coil overs on the back I could easily swap the complete hub assembly's over left to right which would put the callipers on the front side of the axle and allow me to run of the shelf Corsa c SRi cables but the pig tail springs are a little to close to the bleed nipple and I all ready had this set. corsa c hubs and calliper's would all so have saved me the hassle of using conversion plates on the axle like the early Astra rear disk conversions but hey ho. if it works when used in anger I might change a few things and use this axle as a spare and build the other one up

so got the alternator on but wasnt happy with how close the pulley sat next to the chassis rail,
so had a look round nicked a 5 ripped pulley off a saxo alt and set about using that instead of the 6 ripped as standard. but it needed a little time on the lathe to get the offset right

noticed a massive fuel leak on spark free turn over the previous owner had cut the jenvey fuel link pipe to small and when i built it up diddnt realise the o-rings were damaged.
so what to do, get the off cut of go kart track rod, drill it out to the needed size on the lathe then turn down the ends, all good till i got carried away and maachined the end to 9.4mm instead off 10.00mm opps. had people standing around waiting to hear it start for the first time so settled for some 10mm copper radiator pipe. winner no more leaks
linked the laptop check comms and gave it a turn.
started straight away :d it sounded electric till we realised the plastic cam cover wasnt clipped in correctly.

but wouldnt start back up, i put it down to been to warn because the lambda isint connect.
but no so had to stick the booster on which I wasnt keen on because of the race battery
still no go. check the plugs a lil sutty
towed it out the mot station. 25min of scratching my head checked the fuel rail for pressure. AIR:wtf:
jason failed to say it needed petrol. lol

its pretty good according to the man that knows alot more then me about aftermarket ecus
its pretty good according to the man that drives it
its pretty good according to me the mechanic
so engine wise its there will be having it rolling roaded after weston park outting plus a few other things

got a list of things to be done tomorrow on it but nothing serious or that requires any fabrication work.
left the innovate lambda in and connect untill sunday moring, dan will tell the ecu to stop communication with the lambda and I will stick a blank plug in its place. need to actually get the boss welded in the single piece section but times gonna be against us on that so its in a single port on the manifold
