205 MI16 1991 phase 2
This 205 is in lovely condition and has been tastefully modified into a true drivers car with great performance, handling and brakes.
It looks pretty standard but is a real wolf in sheeps clothing and can embarrass many modern and expensive cars. It is civilized enough to use as a daily car but wouldn't be out of place on the track. I would use it every day myself as it puts a massive smile on my face every time I drive it but I commute 65 miles a day so a diesel is necessary. I would love to keep it, but I just don't get time to use it.
Lots of money has been spent in the last two or three years to bring it to the standard it is now at.
Spec: Originally a 1.9 GTI phase 2 with NO sunroof, CAT or power steering. (Largely regarded as the best spec available to produce best handling and steering feel.)
Engine and exhaust system: All alloy 1.9 MI16 fully rebuilt in June 2009 with many parts replaced or refurbed including reground crank, skimmed head, new head bolts, new piston rings, new valves, valve stem oil seals, main bearings etc, etc. Has only covered around 2,000 miles since conversion. MI16 exhaust manifold re-angled so engine sits perfectly at correct position and mated to a beautiful full custom stainless exhaust. Exhaust has no silencers just a stright though pipe that still howls wonderfully at 7000 rpm! Brand new radiator fitted with a twin fan set up. This has had to be moved forward to accomodate the full length inlet manifold. This is desirable as shortened manifold compromises engine torque output but makes bonnet catch so have fitted cromb bonnet struts. New 309 GTI driveshafts have been fitted. Engine mountings and clutch were replaced with new items at time of conversion. Clutch, throttle and speedo cables replaced at this time.
Suspension: Has had a total suspension rebuild. New Bilstein streetline gas shocks all round with 35mm lowering springs. Professionally rebuilt 309 GTI rear beam (£350), 309 GTI front wishbones, new strut top bearings and drop links. Upper and lower strut brace also fitted.
Transmission: Standard 1.9 GTI gearbox retained and new gear linkages fitted with short shift which makes a massive difference over standard.
Brakes: 307 HDI 283mm front disks and callipers fitted. Bigger 405 master cylinder fitted. Tremendous stopping power from this set up.
Steering: New steering rack and track rods/track rod ends.
Wheels/Tyres: Wheels are completely refurbished/powder coated in standard silver and are wrapped in brand new toyo proxes T1-R. (195/50/15)
Probably only covered 3 or 400 miles since I had them fitted.
Exterior: Completely standard in gloss black best colour it think gives it a real stealth look about this car. Recent new badges. Apart from the bonnet bulge from a 1.4 auto and slightly wider track due to 309 GTI suspension, you would struggle to differentiate from a standard 1.9 GTI. Most people would never know they were looking at a car with so much performance potential.
Interior: Standard half leather seats with phase 2 black dash, wheel etc. with a sony headunit.
Bad points: After 18 years of use and exposure to the elements, the car looks great but has the odd dink here and there.
Drivers seat has seen better days looks like there has been a lot of fat a@@ sitting in itso cloth has come away a bit but nohting that cant be fixed or replaced easy enough!
Passanger door motor dosnt work when you lock it or open it.
Tailgate lock not working on the motor but works with the key.
Gear knob could do with changing as this one is bit tatty and worn.
