Just seen a few posts lately about earnings and they seem to vary wildly across this site, so thought would be nosey.

Not really intrested in who earns what etc just vote so we get a broad spectrum.

Student, so I work on half year earnings pretty much lol same situation as kc_08 although generally more hours, 23-26 is a minimum and last week I did over 50. so could go up to £1000-1300 a month before tax, which is emergency tax atm so the thieving scumbags are robbing me blind.

Assuming you only have one job, you'll get all those overpayments back.

I'm on £25k all in at the moment (last year I earned £26k before tax, but that was on a lower salary and more overtime). Underpaid for a unix admin IMO, but thats government rates for you!

Students pay tax as well you know lol

Whats your tax code? You'll see it on a wage slip, or the last letter from the tax office informing you of your tax code.

Technically last tax year (April 08 to April 09) I earnt £109k as that what was paid into my account from various contactors.

However, subtract matierials & labour from that amount & I ended up with about £19k after tax @ 20%.

Then received a £4800 tax rebate in two payments :)

EDIT: Im a subcontractor & 23.

Means you can earn £6479 per year before you pay tax, or more pertinently £539.92 each month. Anything over that will be taxed at 20%, unless you earn over £34,800pa in which case you move up to 40% tax.

If your wages change each month (i.e. not on a fixed yearly salary), your tax will change each month. For example, if you earn £400 in June, you pay no tax. If you then earn £600 in July, you will pay 20% of £60.08 (£600 - £539.92) which is £12.06.

If, by the end of the year, you have overpaid, or underpaid, your tax, your next years tax code will be adjusted to compensate for this. If you're due a rebate, you may find they just pay you a lump sum.

Just shy of £34k p.a less extras

Every time i go away somewhere nice i get an extra £15 a day just because, another £6 a day extra for unpleasant working conditions, and an extra £14 or so a day extra operational allowance (read tax rebate!!!)

So an extra £35 a day, each trip is about 10 weeks at a time, usually at least 2 or 3 trips away per year!

£2450 per trip

i did 2 last year = £4900

So last yr just shy of £39k

Not forgetting my free medical, free dental care.
Free uniform
24hrs a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a yr pay, whether im at work or not, and the 6weeks paid holiday!
PLUS the extra day i get for every 9 days away! so for a 10 week trip i get an extra 7-8 days leave! (5days to a week ;))

Not bad i think!

Financial Advisor on mostly commission. Earn enough to pay the bills, get drunk, put a bit away and build the nova. Good thing about being commission based is that if I need more money I just put in more hours. I'm quite happy coasting at the mo which narks my boss big time as for him to increase his earnings he has to increase mine (he gets 6% of my commission).

lol lol Not quite!

I went nova 2ltr 8v to Nissan Primera 2.0 sport as a daily and nova as weekend then changed Primera for the 350z! lol

I was living at home to then so all was going in my pocket. Since buying a house things a very different.

My mate who is in the same line of work and earning similar money still lives like I used to because his girlfriend is a teacher earning £20 something k a year so her money covers all bills so his money is entirely spending. They've just decided that in 18mths they want to go round the world for a year, including going business class so are now starting to save. Gits.

I read the thread and feel the pangs of jealousy over people who earning half as much again as the sum I earn. But I then think how lucky I am to be in education, a sector which hasn't really been hit by the recession. You cannot beat a bit of security not to mention the job satisfaction of providing a year 4 class with an education which OFSTED rate as outstanding.
Maybe a job satisfaction poll would make interesting reading...
