how quick or easy is it for a complete tool to change rear wheel bearings or is it best left to a garage?

easy!

you need a hammer, some form of punch or flat blade screwdriver to get the old bearing seats out, then when you put the new bearing seats in use the old seat as a cusion to hammer them in, this way you dont damage your new seats.

20 min each side job done :)

While you're in there peel the dust caps back slightly off the brake cylinder and see if any fluid comes out. Also check the brake shoe wear and see if the linings are starting to lift off the shoes. May as well do everything at once!
