View Full Version : Nova Roll-over Jigs
Anyone have some pics of roll-over jigs they've made for their Nova. Would be interesting to see how some people have done them as I wouldn't mind having a go at making one myself. Would like to make one that rotates 360 degrees on an axis rather than one that you just push over on it's side.
Cheers.
I find hedges & roundabouts seem quite good for getting novas on their roofs.
only kidding.
these rigs usually cost at least £500.
if you strip the shell out enough & get a couple of assistants & an old double mattress, you can get similar results

I'm looking to make one of these myself. Want to make one on castors so the whole thing can be moved about too. They seem to be pretty straight forward, the only bit I'm not sure on is a locking mechanism to hold the shell in different postions e.g. on it's side, upside down, right way up etc.
Have looked at this one Chris Astley made and he appears to have used a rear drum and hand brake...

Just looking for pics of other ways this has been done.
Another way ive seen is with a disc with lots of holes in and a pin with a securing plate fixed to the stand. If you understand me that is.
that method looks pretty good.
are you planning to stip your car down to a bare shell? or just get it tipped over for quick stuff??

That's how most of them are locked off ^^
Frost auto do some, and there was a few on display at the NEC classic show t'other year.
I've also seen one made from two engine stands!
that method looks pretty good.

Cheers for the links. I'll be looking to strip the car right down to pretty much a bare shell.

Ah ha good idea, think that's a better and simpler way of doing it.
Cheers for the help everyone.
mr astleys is fapping awesome. never noticed the drum and handbreak before lol
Just did this quick drawing to show you how id do it, and your not limited to just a few position and its less drilling metal which is a good thing.

Not quite in proportion. The rotating part would be lower down I'd think.

I Could Knock Up A Pair Quite Easy !!
couldnt you use the front bumper bars for the jig to bolt o top then the rest of it just links off that, there pretty straight forward i think

You mean just use the original bars that bolt into the chasis legs? Then bolt them onto the rotating bar of the jig? Not sure if the original ones would be strong enough tbh, probs safer to make some sturdier ones. For the sake of drilling two holes in a thicker bar I'd rather do it that way.

Height of the pivot is determined by the distance between it's centre and and the point of the body furthest from it, usually the sides of the cars roof, otherwise when you turn it over the roof hits the floor....
here's one example of home-brew - http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=9953

O RLY? I might take you up on that :p
Good luck with it Matt :thumb:

That's pretty sweet. Can't see how it's being held in drifferent positions though. Looks like he using a bit of rope!

Home made example, was heavy enough for the shell only, wouldn't quite go right over, but made life easy!

I was just thinking about making one of theese, think it would make life so much easier when welding, working on or even painting underneath the shell!
i think your original idea is good.. thats what id go with:thumb: just loose the back wheel its uneccesary since all the wieght will be at the front under the mounting point:)
That looks good Royston, pretty simple by the looks of it.

Good point! Bit of extra stability wont hurt though.

Proabably 'borrow' most of it from my brothers work as theres a strong supply there ;) Plus we have access to the workshop and all the tools whenever we want.

Is that just secured to a set of bumper brackets???
The rear one is only bolted to the rear panel is it not?
I'm after one of these too! Top thread. I wonder if when welding on one, if it'll all be in line when it's back on its wheels? ie quarters etc.

Yes and Yes;)
Used some spacers and washers, so not to distort the rear skin, wouldn't use it on a naffed rear panel though;)

I can see one small flaw in your plan ... your gonna have to get your brother to do it, which i can imagine might take a bit of time !!!

lol Not really, I'll just need a hand with the welding. I can make the rest of it myself and I'm sure he can get the steel from work for me. If not he's got an account with B&M I'll use. Might even have a go at the welding myself, he's got that giant welder sitting there doing nothing, may aswell have a go!
This is our one, not a great pic but shows how we lock ours, there are more holes is the round plate on the other side, so its not just the 4 you see there
It also rotates the full 360 degrees we just use the original bumper L shaped brackets,

Nice one. Gonna have to start doing a few sketches now...
Right, I can get any amount of this stuff for free (40mm Box with 2mm wall)...

You lot reckon that will be strong enough or should I get chunkier stuff?
I used 60mm box steel.
Naaah, don't say now "Pics or it didn't happen" lollol

alright duick we wont...
PICS OR GTFO lol
edit: god damn! reply speed fail :( i will leave it up so others can laugh at my failure
I used 60mm box steel.
 That's a bit hefty! Just been measuring out the bits and I reckon it'll be strudy enough aslong as it's all welded well. It's not exactly crappy stuff and the whole frame isn't going to be that big so should be fine for the weight of a shell.
Edit: Duick, that looks spot on, no concerns with strength there! Think I'll be able to get away with the stuff I have though. Will have a mock-up and see how it looks.
Yes, agree, 60mm was maybe a bit too much, but I always do some kind of "overkill" :d
