I want to do an engine conversion in the looney, but cant decide what to do.

If i go down the xe/let route its gunna be a lot of work welding moving mounts, wiring, so i was thinking what 1.6 conversions have people done, i was thinking maybe a 1.6 on twin 40's, what work is involved, what engine would be best, any projects that have already done this??

Any help would be appreciated,
Cheers guys

There have been many many 1600s on Webers.

The projects sections will give you many ideas.

A turbo 1.6 is also a good idea.

a standard 8v 1600 injection is an easy one to fit. it goes quite well.

Recently, people have been fitting 1.6 turbo's, and imo that's the best "least hassle" conversion for good power, but 1.6 on TB's is just as good for not alot of hassle, but the TB's have to be set up regularly to keep the engine working at it's best.

to do a decent 1600 on 40's, you need to sort out a decent fuel pump for carbs, a 1400 coil, dizzy set

don't get a spi or carb smallblock 1600, they are not a performance engine, you need a e16se or a c16se

Nonsense, throttle bodies don't need setting up regularly at all.

XEs are worth the extra day or 2 spent on the bay imo

1600 16v is a straightswap and very tuneable

Just to add to this the e16se is the gte engine and the c16se is the gsi.

the e16se is a gsi engine too, the c16se only came in the late one's, ie K reg

I would have said a blown 1.6 would be far more effort than an XE. You have the turbo, management, cooling, exhaust, compression... IMO getting a turbo bolted onto an N/A engine is more work and cost than a bit of welding and some engine mounts, for similar power levels.

im not really after a turbo, and dont want an xe for the work and insurance reasons, so what would i need for an e16se conversion, apart from the engine of course.

if you used to the newer corsa engines, what about (as draper said) a 1.6 16v?

nah ive had enough of bloody corsa engines, want something nice and simple 1.6 8v on carbs, how hard is it to fit an e/c16se

I always fancied doing a 2.2 conversion using the all alloy 2.2 from the Astra G/Vectra. Being alloy block hopefully it would be lighter(Wait to be told different) and it has a reverse style head compared to an XE. Could poss be mounted lower(As exhaust manifold is on the rear & does not go under sump) and have front mounted carbs/throttle bodies as per BTCC XE :D
