What parts do i need to do the swap from 4speed to 5 on a standard 1.2 carb nova?

also are there any complications in doing it??

5 speed box, either f10 or f13. the rest is already there, but when you put the box in you may need to remove part of the "lockout" block. lift up the gaiter round the lever and remove some of the white block (i'd imagine 10mm or so should do it)

which box is the better to go with??

and would i not be better off getting a complete lever? or has someone got a photo of this having been done?

i chopped mine out the other week in anticipation of my 5 speed going in next week or so, just need a hacksaw blade as space is tight, but shouldnt take long to cut. the f10 is more economically geared, the f13 more towards acceleration if i remember rightly. look in the sarch for pro's and con's of both, how to find the numbers and wheather its a wide ratio/close ratio and what final drives are in the boxes, theres a few charts somewhere. i've only run f10's because thats what was always fitted to mine (two 4-speeds and two 5-speeds) and never had problems with them.

a ohc box doesnt fit an ohv engine.. so what 1,2 do you have?

pyromaniac_yeti

Novas wont come with 1.2 OHV's tho?

But yer, F13 you have a bit more choice, due to the Short ratios or the wide ratios. F10s are wide ratio.

Oh and you realise theres preety much no gain from going from 4 speed to 5 speed.

a close ratio five speed is going to give better accelleration than the standard four speed, if marginally. but may also give better fuel consumption.

not only that but it leaves me with a wider selection of gears for different situations...so all in all making for a better drive for not a lot of bank

Hang on, no F10 will be close ratio, for that your talking F13, so theres a good reason there, but not with a F10 5speed.

Oh and remember the Final drive will make one hell of a differance.

iirc there was a 1.2n till somewhere mid 80's.

np, didnt take any offence. just 1 of the weird things between the corsa a and the nova

swapping the gearbox internals over is actually very easy. so you could actually make a 1.0 5 speed

Swapping the whole box isnt rocket science and about £20 in parts!

Swapping the whole engine is about 50p with the prices of 1.2s lol

pointless swopping the box imo. i dont get why people feel the need for 5 gears. i love having just 4

drive my astra mk1 on the motorway... 5000 rpm when doing about 75 mph

AlexW

even with 5 speed f10 it wouldnt be much better though.

F13 WR would bring it down, hence thats what i have fitted to my nova.

1.6 Cavs and Astras have what you need mate. ;)

lower revs on the motorways realy what im looking for. my mini was revving around 4500-4750 at 70. made any conversation next to impossible...and the fuel consumption was horrible!!

ill keep a looky out an astra or cav in the breakers. any specific mk/year?
