removing sump sandwich plate

any idea what this seperator plate is for ?
and can it be ditched to run a single gasket without compromising anything ?

Baffle plate you mean, I belive you need it, but i could understand why its not on all engines. You may find that if you removed it you would have to bend the oil pickup pipe up a tad. Other than that im no help lol
