I want to drop the engine out to weld and spray up the bay + give the engine a proper clean/polish, but i dont have an engine crane, what are my options if any?

Lower car as low as possible onto two tyres under sills. Undo engine mounts as it will then be sat pretty much on the floor. Lift car over the engine using a trolley jack with a spare tyre on in the middle of the car just under the back of the engine bay and then drag the engine out.

ahh cool cheers matey, id heard of this method but never known how it was done!

my car is in my (tiny!) garage, but i imagine i could place a strong trolley underneath the engine bay and do as said, then lift the car and just wheel the engine out, commence work etc then simply wheel back under and fix in?

does the drive shaft get in the way or do i have to remove them?

thanks for the reply fella

Your problery have to take off the tiebars and driveshafts, its possible to do it without but makes it easyer.

cheers Adub, do i have to drain the fuel system? or just clamp the pipes?

AlexW

lol Id just remove the pipes, catch the little bit that comes out into a bottle and then put them upsomwhere and forget.

Yours is SPI right? So remove the fuel pump relay (on the blukhead) before you do the above.

will do mate, and yes well remembered :) i take it fuel doesnt come from the tank without the pump making it do so?

i had visions of removing a pipe and getting whats left in the tank all over the garage floor...cues next door neighbour with fag lol

lol as long as the pump isnt making any noise then your safe lol, there will be a bit of lost fuel, but not much.

theres not much mainly exhaust, water pipes, wiring, cables and driveshafts from the hubs etc if your taking the gearbox out too.

AlexW

Yer, make sure Everything is disconnected, gear linkage, clutch cable, all the wiring, all the pipes, etc etc. If you miss somthing it could end up being a right pain in the bum.

how hard is it to disconnect the gear box from the engine? If i do it that way then i will have to lift the block out wont i, or can it slip past the driveshafts tiebars AND gearbox? Pushing it abit that isnt it! Ive got to tell you im learning this v.fast haha, just trying to figure out the easiest way for newby me to do it!

That is probably the daftest advice ive ever heard.lol
"make sure your fair size guys"
So what about if they are 9 stone wet through? Go on steroids 6 weeks beforehand to remove an engine?? lol
And removing them by hand isnt being "hard"
Its a surefire way to do a hernia and make your bollox bleed:tard::tard:

okay so ive disconnected all my pipe work and wiring, but the gearbox is still attached to the engine, can i just unbolt the main bolts that fix the transmission housing to the block?

or do i have to drop out the engine and transmission assembly all together then seperate the gearbox from the engine from there!

where you went wrong is that an engine crane would have been a better first purchase

Tidy Max
19-07-09, 07:36 PM
but well more expensive!!! and also alot bigger for the space i have :( very quick reply though mowgli, impressive!

seriously, though. the quickest way to take the engine out is downwards. unbolt the struts & lower the whole car to the floor. unbolt the engine & box then get the body lifted up in the air. I did this by removing the bumper & sticking two bars in the bumper holes & walking the shell back like a big wheelbarrow. then you can separate the engine from the box.
