View Full Version : Speedo cable

As of a couple days ago, my speedo stopped working. No biggie methinks, its just popped out the gearbox. Nope, its tight in there. Ok, its dropped out the back of the dials. Nope, its still in that end too.

So the cable is in both ends. Avoiding the "its broken in the middle" train of thought, what else could cause it to stop working? I'm seriously NOT looking forward to a trip to Billing with no speedo or mileage reading :(

Yep. Worked all the way home and the trip counter has stopped on 13 miles so seems to have broken just as I went out to Chard to visit a fweind, would have been mid-driving. Grr.

Just to gatecrash the thread, 'tight in the gearbox' would mean fully bolted down, or does the little plastic insert need to be pushed down into the box first? Have a similar problem with mine atm.

Nah, I put the insert in with the box out. its definately home properly.

Its fully bolted in. However, I did notice there appears to be some play in the cable, i.e. if I tug it, it comes up and down a bit (oo-er)

Hmm, think mine might have snapped too then :(

Edit: Not to sound negative on the 'too' but if it's in at both ends... lol

Its snapped then lol. I ripped one out of a corsa B then taped some cable to the old one to use as a pull through when fitting the new one to mine, took about 20 minutes tops, and most of that was fiddling the dials in and out of the dash.

Snapped!!! Its about as much use as a trap door on a lifeboat.

Cock. Snapped inside the sheath I assume then. My dad did muse it might be a problem inside the box where the sender cog has dropped but I didn't want to hear that so ignored it lol

Does it have to be a Nova one? i.e. Cav, Astra, Corsa etc won't be the right size? Might take a run down the scrappy later but I doubt they'll have any Novas in.

Corsa B one fits if you can find one with cable driven speedo.

If you get a donor cable from the scrapyard, take the sender/drive unit out of the box just incase. Remove the cable, then take the bolt out next to where the cable connects then prise it out :thumb:.

Aye, I was planning on getting the whole shebang.

Electrical one would be another option as I do have a Calibra electric speedo sat in my garage lol

Snapped!!! Its about as much use as a trap door on a lifeboat.
....which would be handy if the boat overturned lol

Sender cant drop because the gears are helical :)

has the gear inside the box ever snapped????
or lost enough teeth to stop turning?

You'd be doing everso well to lunch the gears on a speedo drive. Theres no resistance that can be put on it that would come close to stressing it enough.

Out of curiousity, if I removed the dials and shunted the car up the drive (no more than 5-10mph), would the speedo drive rotate fast enough for me to see/feel it?

absolutely

foreign objects or age or lack of oil would do it...
i'm guessing cable or speedo myself, cos they are easier.

Maybe swapping the box upset it lol

if you are still unsure remove the speedo an drive down the road . if the little square bit spins its ok if not its ****ed.
