hey people,

thinking of putting 1.6 16v in my nova, found an engine still running in the car (96 tigra) for the engine, box, loom, ecu etc £225.

what are the best mods for them?
was thinking of a mantzel inlet box thingy lol and a 4 branch.

just want to know peoples views upon these lumps.

thanks Dave :thumb::cool:

can get cheaper than 225 but meh.

Powerbox is a must, other common mods are cams and a 4-2-1 is best, keeps a bit more torque down from the top, where all the power/torque is anyways.

There good engines and fairly reliable, My nova has the smaller X14XE, but basicaly the same engine.

watch out for valve stem seals a very common problem on these engines.

You can tune a e16se cheaper and easier than the x16xe just depends what you want from it.

For mine I am doing;

Inlet plenum (Mantzel style but cheaper)
Wossner high compression 79.5 mil pistons and uprated rods (Obviously block bored out)
Port and polish
Skimmed head
Inlets knife edged and some other head work
Cams
Remap (one day)
4-2-1
F15

Hoping to see 150 bhp, Lots of debt, Hopefully worth it.

You will struggle to get a real 150bhp from a mantzel regardless of what the retailer says, you will be needing carbs or tb's to get a trustworthy 150bhp from one of these engines, and one of the biggest down sides of them is with the spec you have put up you will be looking about 110lb/ft.

What do you mean by a real 150 bhp? When I can afford decent throttle bodies (and afford the amount of fuel that will be used once they are on) I will buy some. Torque isn't something I have fully grasped yet but is 110lb/ft torque crap?

Dave why not look for a c16Xe engine (corsa gsi engine) a boy i no got one and he said it is the best 1.6 16v engine to use but that is just want he has said

*Dave*

well its hard to find them and from what i have heard there isnt much difference.

the x16xe has imob crap built into the ecu, you need a transducer and matching chip key thingy to the ecu,

AlexW

Basicaly the C16 is slighty older and has about 6 (iirc) more bhp and slighty more torque (barly any tho).

Put it this way, My one has been great, once i got to the bottom of the running problem (which was a baxter'd ecu) its great. As long as you get one with all the bits (dont forget the imobliser pickup around the barrel and the chip inside the key) then there great.

*Dave*
07-07-09, 07:17 PM
yes i can get the key chip thingy.

so...... do i stick with my unreliable c20xe or go for a x16xe?

i just want my car to drive nice again but still have good power. dont want to go back to 1.6 8v

is it an easy conversion? wiring wise etc?

General Baxter

i did nothing to the ecu lol

C16XE runs an AFM. the X16 doesnt. (way of identifying them)

I fail to see how the 8v is cheaper to tune. The 16v has way more scope & there arent many engines in existence that you can bolt on a product & get 20bhp or so gain (maybe more) for such a measely price as a copied Powerbox. The engines respond really well to it. Not as ideal as a TB'd/cam'd setup, but that is race engine territory.

x16xe's are prone to valve stem seals, headgasket +cambelts snapping from what iv heard and experienced, but i will be doin a top end rebuild before the engine is installed. (IF) i get one.

what are they like to drive compared to the 20xe beacuse mine drives awfull but is very powerful and im paranoid of it goin wrong as i have had sooooooo many problems with it.

Not really. with abit of money without carbs/tb's you can get 150bhp or there abouts. Look at craigs old one. that was 147bhp and never had carbs/tb's. And my mates who's it was didnt spend much onit

Forgot to mention mine is an x16xel block with a C16XE head if that makes any difference, A mate of mine with a 106 Rallye says I wont keep up with him when mine is done, I hope it does as I said it would lol

x16xe in a nova is alot of fun, my old one was pretty nippy (although i had a 4-2-1 manifold aswell) and ive got one going in my nova within the next few weeks

personnaly speaking id still have a c20xe but i cant afford the insurance

Yea if i had one car id fit the 20xe, But as a day to day driver the 16xe is great. its cheep to fit dont need any mods to the bay done and can get them to 130 bhp very cheep. And you dont need extra springs for the weight ect. do need better brakes tho thats for sure

I would say in inlet powerbox and a good set of cams should see you around that and maybe a manifold. but they are good to start with anyway. ck had 139 iirc with a standard manifold
