Where to start...........

I bought a mk1 Areg nova gl early 2005 when i was 16. Obviasly i thought at the time the more fibreglass tat i had hanging off it the better.

How wrong was i.........

So now being 2009 and 21 my opinions have changed

So this is my last chance to finally finish what should be a respectable mk1 nova.

Heres it goes!

After purchasing the nova it turned out that the rot was bad, very bad. BUT seeing as i had the nova for 2 1/2 years at that point i wasnt giving up on the little mk1.

Off to the welders it went. It recieved the full treatment.

2 full sills
splash gaurds
inner wing corners
slam panel lower and upper parts
engine bay stitch welded
rear suspension turrets stitch welded
and some of the floor needed done also

after that was done it was time to strip all the underseal and treat.

Thats as far as i got before it sat for another 2 years.

So the work started again this saturday.

I travelled down to the lock up where the mk1 has been stored for the past 2 years and took it to my work.

So first thing was to clean up the cage and fit.

The feet were a rite mess

3 hours later the cage was bolted in and done. I am still on the hunt for the front section.

Ive still been busy with this. Took the shell down to the local bodyshop today (Paint technic) and he has agreed to finish all the prep work, build the base coat back up and paint it for £800 :d

Now i just need to start working overtime and selling some of my things to raise the money. He can book me in for the 17th Aug but i will never manage to raise the money in time so im looking at the end of Aug as it will take him a week to finish he said.

Scrapping an A reg should result in the death penalty ;)

I dont really see the point in updating at this stage as its still nothing to look at. I was fighting a loosing battle trying to finish the shell myself, ive done as much as i can, its now going to be in the hands of the professionals to finish it it off.

Well nine days to go and its in the paint shop :)

Picked up a rear disc coversion beam running the astra gsi brakes on friday night. What a dog of an item! Have been working on it since and im no where near finished sorting it out.

For a start the calipers where painted blue as where the hubs of the discs:eek:

So i completely striped the calipers and beam on one side, Needs new hand brake shoes as they are down to the metal and ive spent near 6 hours removing the bleed nipples. Ive had to bore out the tap the calipers  Just hope they work. The hub seems to have camber shims between itself and the beam, and to me it just looks wrong. Atleast the rear poly bush kit i bought 2 years ago will come into play now :thumb:

Pictures will follow tomorrow.

A couple of pics of the rear beam as it stands. Ive done as much as i can to it without attaching it to the car.

Pictures didnt turn out to well as the lighting was poor but you get the idea :)

Dint see the point of renewing the discs and pads as they were like new, just rubbed down the horrible blue calipers, disc hub and painted them silver.

http://file050b.bebo.com/2/large/2009/08/19/18/1101600957a11454561537l.jpg

Cleaned up the pad pins, and that bloody bleed nipple took 3 hours to sort out

Yeah mate, wire wheel then painted it with hammerite. It will do the job for a while. Planning on converting my own rear beam once the mk1 is on the road. This is just a quick fix until i have the funds for a proper powder coated job :thumb:

A few pics from the last few days. Couldnt work on the nova over the weekend because the boss was up. Which meant i was going to be really pushed to get everything done before it goes to the bodyshop this thursday:( but anyways i pressed on.

I have taken the seats out of my clio cup for the nova,Sabelt Montecarlos.

http://file051a.bebo.com/1/large/2009/08/25/21/1101600957a11489455114l.jpg

http://file051a.bebo.com/7/large/2009/08/25/21/1101600957a11489455179l.jpg

I tried it in to try and get my seating position right and to mark where the seat rails will be welded.

http://file051a.bebo.com/18/large/2009/08/25/21/1101600957a11489455243l.jpg

I then cut the seat rails and put the seat in to see if it clears the door bars. Just!

http://file049a.bebo.com/12/large/2009/08/25/21/1101600957a11489455324l.jpg

My welding skills lol!

I then sealed around the welds to tidy them up. I still have the front bars to weld in, but thats tomorrows job aswell as sorting out the new "pattern" front wings.

http://file051a.bebo.com/7/large/2009/08/25/21/1101600957a11489455402l.jpg

Me and my trusty wire wheel attached to the air line :d oh ad look at the state of that brake servo!

Yeah it arrived for paint on Thursday afternoon. The bodyshop said i should have it back by friday :d cant wait, im going for a peek tomorrow lunch time.

I have'nt really thought about the what its going to look like yet tbh. I was thinking about the sport front bumper then i thought about the plough front end then the sr/gte entered my head. As for the rear there i really dont know yet. No skirts so really its just what looks best in the metal?

Wasnt the worst ive seen but its still needed alote of work, I just had to have it as it was an A reg :d

Went down to see it today and almost creamed, ive never seen it look so good. Cant wait to get it back now. Dont think the Boss was to happy when i came down and asked him to fill the rear washer jet hole. He turned round and said "can you not stick a crommet in the hole" to which i replied "whats the point of welding the boot lock and rear wiper hole to flush and there a bloody grommet sticking out of the boot". Ive taken a couple of phone pictures. There not very good but it gives you an ideas of the work being put in.

Im undersealing it mate, as you've propably seen ive taken it back to the metal underneath and treated it so im very happy just to apply new underseal as theres nothing under it there shouldnt be :)

Been working on the A reg all weekend.

First up was digging out the girlfriends old corsa gsi gearbox.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s3/novalovingned/DSCF8002.jpg

Soaked it in G101 (industrial degreaser) and blasted it will the 85 degrees power washer.

After it was cleaned igave it a paint to tidy it up.

Looking good, i like your ramp lol

Is it going to be completely stripped out inside or whats happening there?

Im making up door cards etc and getting them flocked aswell as the dash. Cant decide if im going to run glass for a start or poly windows?

muzzy
22-09-09, 12:26 AM
Im assuming it will be garaged? If so i would go for poly windows, will fit in with the rest of the car and its always good to save a bit of weight lol

Yeah its garaged mate. Dont know now. Was warming to put in glass until tonight when i went out to the garage to start........... I have a full set, minus the back window, of bronze tinted windows as found in the sport, but i hate them lol finding replacment glass will be a nightmare!

Go plastic then, may as well with the stripped out interior and id imagine it will only be used on nice days etc so you dont have to worry about it being cold or wet lol

Just a couple of wee things done.

I was given a gsi/gte servo (Thanks Cheeze :) ) to replace the old 1.2 job. Didnt realise the size difference until they were side by side. So stripped it bare, rubbed it down and painted it. All bolted back together with lylock nuts.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s3/novalovingned/DSCF8060.jpg

While i was at it i thought it would be a good idea to sort out the steering rack. I bought new boots and track rod ends for it. Painted it up and again it came out well. Sorry for the poor picture i never thought to take a picture while it was out of the car lol

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s3/novalovingned/DSCF8049.jpg

I then dug out the pedal box and was ready to fit.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s3/novalovingned/DSCF8055.jpg

UNTIL i came across this bloody spring. Looks like its it to return the clutch pedal once its been depressed. But i cant work out what way it wraps around the pedal arm?????? If anyone can shed any light it would be appreciated :)

Yeah there are a couple in the bay, like i said in an earlier post i wasnt happy with the engine bay :( not seen when the engine is in though so its not bothering me to much tbh, can always be sorted at a later date when the next engine is put in.

As for the parts i agree with you, no point in chucking old parts back in.

Then i thought i would add the splitter to the front end.

Im really starting to think this bloody car will never be done  Long story short..............

I had to take the car back to the bodyshop as i was unhappy with the marks on the rear 1/4. They now are trying to charge me for the work they done saying it was my fault. So im going down tomorrow armed with a chalk pen to circle every single mark/imperfection on the paint work. Like i said long story short, Raging about it tbh, think he knew that when i was on the phone. He never said in any of the four phone calls this week anything about money, and we never once agreed that it was going to cost.

I cant see it being out anytime before xmas, which will set my on the road date back. AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH! First good offer takes it away lol

I bought a set of gmax gas supersport shocks and springs. They came at a good price and will do the job until i can afford a better setup, but they do the job for just now.

So stripped them apart and cleaned up the strut tops. Gave the bearings a grease up, cleaned the threads and gave them a lick of paint.

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s3/novalovingned/P1060356.jpg

When i was taking the old running gear off i had a wee look at the old mk1 rear beam. I was shocked at the condition it was in. The backing plates on the drums were like new, the drums were like new and genuine gm, it had new shoes and all the stub axle bolts were free

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s3/novalovingned/P1060359.jpg

So i decided to start rebuilding the drum rear beam and not run the rear disc beam. First of i stripped the old crap off and gave it a paint.

Looking really good mate, love this project, it coming on well.

Battery is similar to my dry-cell set up, though i moved mine from the well to the left side, just in case i wanted to use a spare.

hey ecka. battery clamp is very smart, like the foam, alot of people would ignore stuff like that. maybe make a cover for the + terminal incase anything drops across the terminals (happened to me once. big bang and my ratchet now has a tiny weld mark on either end)

also, received the brake parts over the weekend. cheers for the drawing too. top man

Tiny update

Belt on now :) Because the Pipercam pully had no timing marks on it i had to put the mangled cam belt cover on and standerd pully. Found the timing marks, lined it up and locked the cam. Then swapped over the pulleys and made my own timing marks. Seems to be fine as i have turned the engine over by hand hundreds of times since. I can fine tune the timing once its running :d

I have leads and plugs etc on there way so its just a case of filling with oil etc sticking in the engine loom and hopefully it will fire up. Not the lack of alternator lol will be fine for a couple of minutes!

Going to try and start this saturday. Spent the last couple of nights sorting out earths and last bits of wiring.

In with the coolant and on with the coil after a strip down and clean.

My boss bought me a battery cut off swith rated to 250 amps lol

http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s3/novalovingned/NovaNew056.jpg

Have to go under the bonnet to turn it on, it was the only place i could think of putting it lol Does bother me as the car is going to be rarely used.

And like said, wires roughed in and ready to go......

Saturday me and Steven aka Cheeze set about starting it up.

After a couple of hours chasing bad earths, taking of starter motors to find there working fine, fuel pumps failing, alote of swearing and me spitting the dummy on a couple of ocassions it runs :d

5 1/2 years on lol

Turned the key and it went straight away. Chuffed is an understatment!

Heres a small video of the second start up. It noisy due to manifold just being placed on.

really nice! The 2 wires you were querying earlier are off the coil - the green one is the rev counter (goes in the bottom rightr as you look towards the coil from the dizzy) - the other one - I think goes on the other side of this (next to it) - cannae remember if its black or brown though - had the same debate on my engine swap today!
