My dad's finally got round to firing up the XE in the Seven (project thread coming soon), but the cambelt seems to be tightening and loosening itself at various points of turning the crank.

Anyone any info on this?

Do you mean the pointer on the tensioner shifts as you rotate the engine??

If so thats perfectly normal due to compression at tdc etc etc :)

Just going on the tension of the actual belt really when we turn the engine by hand. It seems to loosen then tighten up.

It's because you're effectivly tightening one side of the run while the other goes slack and vice-versa when turning it by hand.

My XEV did the same thing.

might be something to look at but im assuming that there was no slack on the non tensioner side ie from the crank pulley upto the ex pulley? Could be that there wasnt enough tension there, and when you turn it over its tensioned on the tensioner side but not on the other??
