Hi all,

Been on the scout for a new project over the last few months and today I picked up this little runabout (sorry about the pic quality - its in a barn and rather dark!) ......

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0031-1.jpg

The more door has rather rusty doors and rear arches , however with the plans I have for it I am undertaking some major body reworking so the rear arches won't be a major problem for me.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0034.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0035-1.jpg

Its done 27k and although the doors and arches are a bit crusty , the main bits like chassis legs , sills and floor pan are all very sound which makes life a lot easier for me.

Engine wise its currently a 1.2 8v - which is being ditched . If you want this engine or any of the following parts which are surplus to requirements PM me ....

mk2 bonnet
mk2 front bumper
mk2 dash
mk2 front & rear seats

As for the plans ...... well its been put to bed until the autumn when I can get my 888 Nova into winter storage and then have room in the garage to play! However I do need a decent set of front doors if anyone has any or finds any let me know!

Also picked up a set of rather cruddy set of Wolfrace Voodoos off ebay which had seen better days ....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0024-2.jpg

These are the mk2 versions with writing on the spoke which I wasn't too keen on ...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0022.jpg

First job was to get rid of all the crud and baked on rubbish ....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0023-1.jpg

Then start to get rid of the writing - fibreglass filler first ...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0028-1.jpg

..... which is sanded back ....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0029-1.jpg

Then a coat of filler ....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0030.jpg

Sand this back and finally a coat of primer filler and job done ...

Not even attempted to try them yet - there's no oil in the engine, no brake fluid , coolant or petrol . The breakers yard I collected it from had already disposed of all the fluids ready to crush it  - I rescued it just in time!

jacksons scrapyard, it was a mk1 in lazer blue.

Had a look at this one today - a mk1 G reg - doors, arches and most of the other panels are mullered - door bottoms are as holy as the pope and some of the other panels have some major dents.

So still on the hunt for a set of decent front doors!

Went to look at a 5 door hatch today in Kirkbymoorside to see if the front doors were any good - they were just better than mine but would still need a re-skin so said "no thanks" to the chap! Its the red 5 door on ebay at the moment.

Is this going to be a double rear axle wheeler?

Well , thats the nearest guess so far ....... so here's my idea - a twin axle trailer , I knocked this pic up in paintshop (my son could have done this lol lol ) to give you an idea ....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/saloontrailor1.jpg

I'm going to cut the front off just under the windscreen and then plate it down to the floor pan.

I need to cut the floor pan out to fix in the second axle and weld up the rear doors and cut in some arch repair panels.

Will have it sprayed the same colour as the 888 , already have the wheels which are the same (Wolfrace Voodoo's) albeit on a 15" rather than 16" which will be anthricite . Planning to board it out inside with storage compartments and a flat area to sleep on (here comes the memory foam!). In the boot I am thinks of a large sliding shelf coming out to mount a BBQ or something on !

Should be interesting, but won't be starting the major work till October.

Enjoy ... and have a laugh at my Windows Paint skills lol lol lol

Have you worked out the weight of it yet Joff?

iirc max towing weight with a nova is around 600kgs braked, 500kgs unbraked (can't find my haynes so weights may be higher), and with a pair of rear beams that's gonna be pretty much about 500kgs unladen? (that's being generous at 200kgs for engine and 'box, 100kgs for suspension and bodywork removed) So to allow for carrying a few bits and bobs you're gonna have to link the brakes up.

I'd be tempted to leave the second axle, and either move the one already there forward (same amount of work on the body really), or chop the floor out a bit and install proper trailer running gear (again a little further forward than what it is), which would give the benefit of being able to build a flatter, lower floor and have proper auto-reverse brakes (unbraked hubs can be had in 4x100 so vauxhall fitment wheels should go on, braked 5-studs don't).

Hadn't really given this much thought to be honest. However chopping off the front , losing the engine, gearbox , front suspension, exhaust, fuel tank, dash , seats and interior trim I would think this would bring the weight down a fair bit.

However I will bear this in mind when building the project and will keep the option of putting in cable brakes just in case.

Cheers for bringing my attention to this !

Drivers side is sound, however the passenger side has a plate welded along the chassis leg (see engine bay pics) so I would expect there is some rot somewhere underneath! Also its very rusty behind the headlamp.

You can have have it for nothing - postage will be about £9 DHL - but it may not be worth it with the rust thats there!

So which weights would go in GVW , Axle 1 and Axle 2 - had a dig around on the net and it all seems very confusing :(

Joff

mikey14sr
08-07-09, 07:48 AM
GVW - maximum weight of the vehicle, loaded (needs to be within the towing vehicle's maximum capacity).
Axle 1/2 - max weight per axle.
UW/Axle 3 - unladen weight or max weight for axle 3.

From what I remember the max weight a nova rear axle can take is 550kgs (it'll be on the VIN plate), so one axle might do you.

I have found out the weight for a normal GTE (see below) which is 876kg . Now my nova has a C20LET and an F28 box, plus a lot of strengthening plates and welding. It also has a boot install which I'm sure weighs a fair bit.

It wouldn't surprise me that the kerb weight is now c. 1100kg if not a bit more. So what does that make the max towing capacity??

Unfortunately the extra weight of any modifications to the towing vehicle have no effect on the towing capacity legally (unless you re-submit it for type approval and base the gvw and gcw on the new specification, and stamp them into a new VIN plate), so you'd have to stick to whatever the limits are that are stamped on the VIN plate from the base car (a 1.3SR in your case?).

Ahh!, just found my haynes hiding in the back of a cupboard! Max towing weights for 1.3, 1.4 and 1.6 models (regardless of trim spec) are 400kgs unbraked, and 800kgs braked. So you can tow a trailer upto 800kgs gvw, so long as it has overrun (auto-reverse) brakes.

Another ahh!, kerb weight of a more-door loon is around 800kgs, so yeah with the front lopped off and seats and tank out it'll probably be around 450-500kgs.

Edit, just had a rough go at a 'shop for you, think you'll have to add some of the rear doors (whats left will be welded up no?)to the front ones to allow for the arch, and it does need lowering I think!

I think I will get a braked hitch and cobble together a mechanism to work the drums on one of the axles - still preferring to go down the twin axle route as I think keeping just one axle will make it nose heavy.

There's alot more to trailer building than I imagined ! I have found a supply of info plates on the bay so will add that to the front somehwhere!

Apparently I will also need marker lights on the front corners if its over 7 foot long as well - ebay again for these !

There certainly is!

I've come across a lot of this info through research into building a box trailer specificly for the transport and storage of a certain marquee and other stand equipment.

I agree it would be nose heavy if you left it single axle without moving it forward, I'd imagine it would certainly be over the 50kg max vertical load on the towbar (normal limit is 75kgs but it's reduced on nova's).

Going for twin axles means you'll either need to buy another floor to weld in or fabricate mountings for the forward one from fresh, If the later it'd probably be just as easy (same amount of welding just longer lengths of box section) to build a proper chassis with trailer/caravan axle units and simply bolt the nova body on (in which case I'd make it single axle with 900kg braked suspension units (just put 800kgs on the VIN plate)and move the entire wheel arch tubs forward on the body).

With a pair of nova axles and the brakes linked up (has to be cable operated btw)you can etch/stamp the plate with GVW - 800kgs, axle 1 - 400kgs, axle 2 -400kgs, UW - take it to a weighbridge empty and get the weight of the trailer when completed.

With regards to marker lights get led ones, they last ages and you don't tend to "lose" lenses.

I think I have read that on double axle trailers only one axle needs to be braked - is that correct??

Strike the above - DVLA says "Braked trailers manufactured after Oct. 1982 require brakes that comply with EC Directives. If brakes are required, all wheels must be braked. (if manufactured in or after 1968) "

I think I must have been referring to the handbrake rules "Braked trailers must be fitted with a parking brake that operates on at least two road wheels on the same axle."

So I will cobble together the 4 handbrake cables so they work with the braked hitch mechanism. Me thinks a trip to a caravan / trailer specialist in Hull will be necessary for this!

Two things -

1. I'm not allowed by the wife until her kitchen is revamped (September)

and

2. I'm waiting until the end of September until the Nova can go into winter storage so I have space in the garage over the winter to do the work on the trailer.

So at this time the best I can do it keep rounding up the main parts - nearly there to be honest - just need some GTE sideskirts (just the straight bits) and some arch insert panels (Imperial panels are awaiting stock)

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0084.jpg

... and some 6" x 9" Infinity speakers to liven up the inside !

Thats now most of the bits sorted - just need some arch repair panels and I think thats most of the major bits now sorted.

Nope - its going to be a trailer - more like this but twin axle so the noseweight isn't to heavy (NB this one would be illegal in the UK due to it having an excess noseweight and it being unbraked)

Totally agree about the ride height (and the stupid angle the white polo trailer is at).

I will be measuring how high the towball sits at the back of my nova then ensuring that I position the hitch in such a way that the trailer is level and not ar$e end up.

Hi Jeff

Discs will only work with hydraulics which are illegal on trailers in the UK - they have to be cable operated - so its drums all the way !

More stuff for the "pimp my trailer" collection .... some more speakers ....

OK, bit of an update, the kitchen is finished and I have been given the green light by the wife to start.

Spud kindly came round this morning to help me tow the loon round - he was complaining that the bearings sounded a bit rough. However on closer inspection it was just the wheels nuts not tight lol lol lol

Anyway pushed the loon up into the garage .....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0126.jpg
However the suspension had a few rusted bolts on it so it was time to get the angle grinder out !!!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0128.jpg

This had partial sucess , so it was time to get the BIGGER grinder out lol lol

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0130.jpg

Once all the suspension was off it was time to look at the engine bay - off came all the pipes and wiring loom and then I made a permanently removable slam panel .......

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0132.jpg

Out came the radiator and the rest of the pipes and its now ready for the mounts to be undone and then the engine can be lowered and pulled out the front once I make a permanently removable cross member !

I was thinking of doing this but I need the parts in more managable sizes and I don't think the wife would be happy with a nova front end sitting in the middle of the drive :d

The rest will be off in about 4 bits -

In all fairness im surprised it didnt come off in one lump, he got the baby grinder out and said im sure we will need this at some point, then added oh and ive bought this specially (and produced the bigger grinder) which he was only too happy to start using on the shell and you shouldve heard the evil giggles and chuckles coming from him as he approached the poor innocent nova with grinder spinning away, i think he liked all of this grindy grindy choppyness lol

]Bit of an up date today.

Needed to get the nova out of the garage today as I need to work on the new Meriva so I needed to get the shell a bit lighter ......

So with the engine ready I took off the cylinder head to leave just the block and the gearbox in . I undid the rear mount and got a jack under the gearbox - I undid the gearbox mount and then started on the offside mount....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0215.jpg

Then .... oh dear , the lovely 1.2 8v hit the deck ....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0217.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0219.jpg

After it had spilled oil and coolant everywhere I cleaned up and moved the block and gearbox to the scrap pile round the side of the garage...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0220.jpg

I then started with the grinder ....... :witch:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0221.jpg

Just a small gap at first but it got bigger ....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0222.jpg

And then for some strange reason the whole of the front end fell off .....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0223.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0224.jpg

I got all the scrap out of the way and trolley jacked the shell out of the garage and covered it up from the weather and got the meriva in to do a good service on it.

Bit of an update...

Been a bit sidetracked of late with getting the wifes Meriva up and running. She's now a happy bunny so on with the loon ....

Got all the back end stripped down, back bumper off , clusters and all the rubbish out of the boot !

There's a few scabby patches but nothing major !

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0084-1.jpg

Pulled off the rear beam - the bolts were rusted so had to grind the bolts head off and then punch through the shaft . Will need a major strip and grind to make nice and clean ...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0085-1.jpg

Started on the rear arches as well - cut out the fuel filler hole and rear arch..

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0086-1.jpg

The metal just fell off ... honest ....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0087.jpg

Will need to keep stripping off stuff and I need to get the shell on its side so I can work underneath !

Had a few days off work so cracked on with the stripping - got it down to a bare shell .....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0090.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0092.jpg

Then got the shell tipped on its side so I could work on the underneath ....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0094.jpg

Although the arches are quite bad , with the arch inserts I'm putting in this shouldn't be a problem. The rear sections behind the back bumper were none existant so the rust was chopped back here and will be repaired. It was surprisingly clean under the fuel tank and behind the rear bumper trim ....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0097-1.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0096-1.jpg

I set about hacking off all the unwanted brackets and flaps and ground out any surface rust and treated it with rust eater ......

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0098.jpg

Once all cleaned up I will start to mark up where the second arch will need to be cut out of the floor pan .

Enjoy

Not sure at this point to be honest - I have some job exams coming up in April which need at least 100 hours of revision so for most of March I may be a bit busy.

any more updates joff?

Nope still sits as per pic in #166 above . I have a VERY important exam coming up in April and need to spend some time revising for it so most of the spare weekend garage time is now being diverted towards this exam.

Its on the 19th April so not much will be done on it until then - I have a week off over Easter so may get a morning or afternoon to play with it.

As the weather has been a bit naff today I have taken the opportunity to get some more work done .....

Firstly stripped 6 doors, junked two rotten front doors and rubbed down the other 4 , this actually took quite some time as
one of the new white doors had a hole under the rub strip where an angle grinder at a salvage yard had cut the hinges
off the donor car , but had gone through the skin as well. Out with the mig welder and a bit of filler. The bottom corner had
been kinked in transit as well so this needed straightening and more filler - see the grey patch on the white door ....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0163.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0164.jpg

I then chopped up some wings as I needed the rear edges for filling the gap between the front doors and the front
blanking plate that will be going in.....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0165.jpg

I then cut out the rear seat plate in order that I have sufficient length to get my memory foam mattress in .....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0166.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0167.jpg

I have also marked out on the floor pan where I am chopping out metal. Will break out the 9" grinder in the morning
(much to my neighbours delight no doubt!)

Bit more work this morning ....

Stripped off both rear beams including the stub axles.

Made up a frame to mount the two rear beams together . I thought this would be the easiest way of making sure both beams are parrallel and so it doesn't crab sideways when towing ....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0191-1.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0192.jpg

Just need to hack the wheel arch out on the nearside and I can offer it up.

Also worked out what I'm doing for handbrake cables - I'm going to use Corsa Combo ones like these :-

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/combobrake.jpg

Will just need to weld on some tubes to hold the outer cover on both the shell and beam - no biggie ! With a yoke at the end of the cables it means I can connect two sets together and then onto the main connector for the braking system on the hitch.

Update from this morning -

Got busy with the 9" grinder again on the otherside ....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y15/joff-turbo-nova/PICT0195.jpg

Then found out the shell was losing a bit of rigidity lol :( lol .... so had to break out the ratchet straps to keep things in place - also offered up the rear beams....

Yes I have been looking at those - I'm planning on running some steel strip round the outer edge to give it more lateral strength and some extra support at the base as well.

Due to lots of time pressures and having a nice bout of swine flu and tonsillitis for 3 weeks starting at Christmas not much has happened - however I am planning on cracking on with this ASAP once I have the vectra back up and running (as its juts thrown its cambelt grrr)

come on joff is this gonna be ready for billing?

The honest answer to this is no.

You will see from my Meriva thread due to a few problems with the Vectra I am in need some something that I can rely upon that is not too high maintenance. The Vectra is now on 146k so I am looking to press the new 59 plate meriva into service sooner rather than later.

This coupled with the fact that I have some job dependant exams that I need to pass this year (no exam passes = dismissal from job come January 2012) makes my time even more limited for projects.

Such is the call on my time this year it will be unlikely that the nova will be taxed and pulled out of winter storage this year.

Once I have my exams sorted , which should be (touching lots of wood) by October this year I will be able to resume the trailer project.

The joys of being a financial adviser!
