problem with mates focus?

my mate just popped over telling me whilst hes driving he cant select any gears. if you stop with the engine off you can easily change gears. if you put it into gear and turn the engine on it rocks like fcuk. he said just before it first did it he heard a big bang. he then tried it again and its now working perfectly, at the moment.

what do you think has gone on it?

thats what he first thought as it was the obvious thing, but its now fine. i dont get how the clutch could go completely and then be fine the next minute. iv told him just to take it home and then take it to a garage first thing monday morning, we know more than likely it will be the clutch but just thought id check to see what you guys think before trusting it with somebody else

clutch releace bearing? or the slave cylinder if they have them

could be the release bearing poping in and out of its holder had a few wtih that problem when i was spannering
