View Full Version : Saxo VTR - Same engine through out production?
Hi, I need a new engine for my VTR project car, mine is a 98R reg and have found a cheap local engine out of a 2002, are they the same?
Thanks, Ryan

there might be the small odd change, like sensor placements, but i do believe they are the same engines throughout...
just read different ecu, extra cat, different manifold, uber gay not as easy as i hoped

earlier ones were 90bhp, later ones 100bhp, can't remember when the changeover was, think it was around 2000 or 2001 as my brother is after a late vtr engine for his 106 so wants a later one.
plenty of them about cheap. my trouble is the local ones are late ones

No I'd rather not. People on here have more than enough knowledge of Saxos to help with my problem, no need to sign up for one and get told to use the search button.

Earlier engines had better cam follower/rockers or summat. If you are tuning it, it makes sense to have them.
Identifiable by the black rocker cover.

later have paper oil filter and early metal canisters and not interchangeable unless you use the manicat from the latter of the two as the early system fouls oil filter just get an early one or 1.6 xsara lump

Early cars had a blacktop engine and the later ones had the silvertop, the blacktop engine are in cars from 1997 till mid 1998 (ish) so are short lived if yours is on a R it should be a blacktop, therfore the 2002 engine will not be a straight swap. The inlet manifolds are different and has already been said the exhausts are different i.e where the cat is positioned- the blacktop engines cat is in the exhaust system just under where the gearstick is whereas the silvertop cat is in the manifold, they are interchangable but you will need more than just the bare block to put it in.
iirc can use the xsara engine from similar year too!
Thanks all, helpful info
I'm not going to tune it, just whack the engine in and sell it on
I will research the xsara engine mate

i have just sold my quicksilver that i put a vtr engine in but the wirring was different as the 106 ran a 3 pin plug late and the saxo silver top run a 1 plug ecu. you can do it the other way round but not this way.
make sure to check that. also i have a r reg ecu decoaded for sale

Would i need one? the bottom end is fooked on the original engine so just replacing it keeping the same wiring/ecu

if you fit another black top then you can use the current ecu, but if you fit a silver top then you will have to change the wiring harness and ecu and get the new ecu unlocked or get the key and transponder that goes with it
Cool hopefully getting a 98 blacktop on Saturday
