View Full Version : Camber adjustment...

Right, lowered my car a fair few months back, but it's going through tyres like nothing else (a set lasts about 6000 miles tops, and that is without "mucking around")

As the car is coming off the road for a full rebuild restoration in November (thanks dad) while I'm at Uni, is there a way I can temp bodge it on my standard shocks to reduce camber until then?

I was thinking opening the top holes on the bottom strut mounting to adjust camber?

Please dont suggest buying decent suspension, I KNOW!!!!, I'm on a tight budget right now and so would rather accomplish something DIY style. "Propper" suspension such as coilovers will be going on over winter.

you can get camber kits from lmf. iirc

The adjusting bolts? I've seen those, they are next resort lol

they would be your best bet. if you were to open up the top shock hole then it would then bring the top of the wheel out. do you have space to do that?

Yes, it's not that low and on 14" wheeld (allbeit with mahoooosive balloon 60 profile tires) but there is space. Going to try that and see what happens. Think I'll start with a less knackered set of front shocks though lol

lol aye try it and see. they would need to be exactly the same on both sides and the tracking be spot on or it would be awfull to drive!!

Theres another option which has been done on my mates nova for years. The top hole was made bigger, the camber setup for the drop at the time (once it had bedded in) and then a washer welded in where it needed to be.

Just opening up the top hole didnt work so good as going over a pot hole it would wreck the settings (torqued up to the right setting too).

To get the washer in the right place we tacked it in where we thought was right, checked it, once it was right the washer was fully welded in.

let_nova its a pretty shocking ride/handling setup anyway, but its still a 1200 and doesnt push it past the point of no return anyway yet so anything's an improvement.

AW06....that sounds like a cracking idea, will hold it in place. I was thinking just opening the hole up sideways but of course it would shift it so a washer would be good idea to hold the setting.

you can bodge a camber adjustment out of the STD steering knuckle, according to the haynes manual dispite the fact its technically not adjustible if you file out the top bolt hole so its oval then you can adjust it that way, but you will need to make sure that its tight as it will just knock back out of adjustment soon as you hit a bump otherwise.

Personally I would elongate the upper strut holes in the turret & reinforce the new position with a welded washer.

Something to check also, is the orientation of the upper spring mount in the top mount assembly. Make sure the hole drilled off centre is 180deg opposite from the lower mounts on the damper (ie facing toward the inside of the car). It screws up the camber if wrongly mounted.

Get your tracking reset if you perform any of the methods above.

Was going to have tracking done anyway, didnt want to have it done till I'd sorted this out first.

Craig that would be a bit like eccentric top mounts. I might try that if the lower mount method doesnt have desired effect, as it's a little more involved and i'd rather do damage to a set of struts rather than screwing up some strut tops lol

Listen to craig on this, I went through two sets of tyres before I found out that this was the problem, then obviously get the tracking set afterwards. :thumb:

Going to get cracking doing this tomorow, need to change wheel bearing anyway so while I'm in that area mayaswell.
