It could be any number of things but the most likely is that its lost some or all of its refrigerant gas. ( note it may not work if its very cold outside cos the thermostats may not let it trip in) What usually happens is that it gradually leaks out of the flexible pipework and joints. Eventually too much is lost and a low pressure warning switch is activated which shuts the whole system down to protect the pump.
Go to garage or anywhere that specialises in auto air con servicing and get them to check the gas charge, check for leaks and top up if necessary.
If there is anything more serious with it they will tell you cos they will have had probs filling it.
Watch out cos it can be a pricey business - check how much they are gonna charge you for a top up before they do it! Some garages try to charge hundreds just for a simple top up costing 30 or 40quid!
