What a state

the kit would probably get put back to standard. and im aware they arnt the most reliable of things. i havnt been in one since i was 15 lol but remember back then it was fcukin quick and the door didnt open at the petrol station Lol. but its one of those cars iv always said id own one day.

i just browsed PH that day and that was the best i could find tbh. couldnt get a white one as theres a mint one around here. but if you all say its a state then il give it a miss ha

Cool motors if looked after. There's a lad along the street from me with one also, immaculate standard ph2 running sensible boost.

as much as i hate them i'd still love one from when i was young but have to take a miss on that one because loos a mess

that one above looks really nice. im sure it wont be too hard to make look decent. aslong as the paint is decent and it comes with a good amount of mods (like it does), then i reckon i could make a minter out of it.

but then iv got to think, which i would rather have. that or the E30. and thats probably why the E30 is still sat here with me lol

tbh always had a soft spot for them go fot it mate!!

Thats not a fair swap IMO and never would be. I would keep the e30 all day long.

Your e30 is a stunning example and the good weather is nearly on its way. I know what I would rather take out in the summer,

R5s are good fun, but are all ragged to wholly death and held together with fiberglass/filler.

That one looks a prime example - steer clear.

its a good example once the roof is down but iv split the rear screen. i suppose i should just fix it and the other little faults and then it would be a stunner.

Pretty cool & retro now. ;)

I used to hate the damn things.

rarer than Novas tbh.

thing was pretty fast to after some engine mods.

Dont like them myself, i know there quick but nah.

17-06-09, 02:46 PM
I'm with CG. They got much better with age and are a very rare thing these days. On the whole a bit too 'French' for my liking though coupled with shocking reliability lol.

If you think that the PH sh1tter is a £3k car L33 then you too sound like Carcraft fodder! lol

~~joycey~~
17-06-09, 02:57 PM
I owned a black one with a few pieces done to the engine, as above can be unreliable but when they do work there brilliant!

The only time they break is when you turn the boost up too much, run it at low boost and they go fine and dont break :)

And imo that PH one is'nt worth half of 3 grand lol

L33 LEG
17-06-09, 02:59 PM
i think il give it a miss lol i always look for what car to buy and never seem to find one that i will stick with

You should get one mate as i reckon you'll love it! Just dont get that one and not for 3 grand lol

Ive got respect for R5's.

They can look very cool and go like stink when treated to a bit of boost and a decent front mount, great fun to be in aswell the handling is awesome imo.

But on the other hand, crash and you fooked, oil pressure drops a bit and your engines fooked etc etc

AlanH
17-06-09, 03:16 PM
had an r5gtt a few years back, was like a little hand grenade, if it ran right it was great but was painfully unreliable, even by my standards. my xe nova's much more fun to drive and has a much better spread of power although keeping the little 5 on boost all the time is half the fun i suppose.

17-06-09, 03:22 PM
If tweeked well the lil 1.3 can apparently handle 200 odd hp, but you will be needing to uprate the cooling like a 1000000% in order to handle it.

If you get one, make sure that you keep a very close eye on the mechanicicals and the temp gauge. kinda would suggest fitting a see-thru firewall and dash! been told that if they overheat they have a big risk of just going bang!

gunny
17-06-09, 03:29 PM
5's can be reliable if your not a n*b about it, keep and eye out for oil leaks, keep on top of your oil/water levels, make sure all your gauges are working/get better performance gauges, dont go crazy with the boost, decent cooler, hoses, rad and fan and your away.

They have a bad name because of morons with in car boost controllers that think they can wind the boost on to silly amounts and get away with it everyday. My mate used to have one of THE fastest 5's in the country and even he will tell you even with the power he was running, if your not an **** and keep on top of it the car will surprise you.

And its a 1.4 novaguy08

Brilliant cars are the 5.They can embarass alot of bigger cars.
I dont think you will find many 1.4's quicker

L33 LEG
17-06-09, 03:39 PM
cheers for the replies, seems if its a good example then you're a fan of them. when and if i sell my cab il look again at them and see if any take my fancy.

saying that tho i really should get my nova on the road and then i wont need a hot hatch lol

I had one about 4 years ago and it's the car I regret selling most. Had 40k miles on it and never let me down.

Was running about 180bhp most of the time I had it with bigger turbo etc but got it totally standard. It had been on Jersey all it's life so low miles, no rust and unabused till I got it!

i had a Raider, it went like stink, overheated everywhere and then decided it would set on fire whilst i was driving it..

17-06-09, 06:37 PM
Theyre massively tunable but as with anything the more you squeeze out of them the less reliability you have, the block remained the same as the one used in the seventies in the old giordini mid engined ones which ran epic power something stupid like 400-600bhp iirc:eek:

my opinion warpppppppppppppppppppppppppp BANG

17-06-09, 06:42 PM
I know people that have owned them, had nothing but problems BUT - these people constantly played with them without knowing what they were doing. Turning the boost up is not the best way to better power lol

Both these mates have also rolled one each, out of the 2/3 they owned lol

They are cool looking (imo) fun little cars. Not slow either

Lovely cars, i had an mega tuned one (well over 300bhp) when i was about 17/18 ish, went like a fecking rocket ship. None the less exploded like the after burners on one :(

Would defiently have another one mind now im a little more sensible.

Im sure if you really wanted it to it would, if you can put a 1.8 16v clio/R19 engine in then im sure it would fit with a squeeze (I have a valver engine and they're quite sizeable)

Im quite a fan of them.A lad local to me had a fairly big spec one years ago and took me out in it and still to this day i can remember the sheer acceleration of it!If i had a garage i would be quite tempted to get one.

Ive found there like Novas, once youve had one, youll always want another one.

R5 Raider is what you want thou, full leather, imperial blue paintwork & funkay "Raider" badges :D

They do make a lovely noise. Just a pity the build quality & typical odd French design.
Kart like steering, nice gear change, odd seating position & flimsy seats which by now will be ready to drop you through the bottom.

Old push rod engine design defies logic. How can something that crap handle so much boost?

Testimony to the durability however..

Yeah theres a raider one around here.First saw it when he had just finished building it and he shot off down the road giving it full beans with no bonnet on!Also a guy has just finished rebuilding a mk1? R5(c reg with different front end to normal R5's?).

I agree with mike though if i was going to get one it would have to be a Raider one.

i used to have a white 5 turbo which when it did work was mint and it went like hell but i got pissed off fixing it every weekend as they are immensly unreliable. if you do get one don't stick a nobby kit on them just leave the body standard, edgy 80's looks. by the way the mk indy got owned, although to be fair i really do like them too
