Your right, as standard a 13 would be best. But if you dont mind getting your hands dirty, go for the 1400. 1300 head, 1300 inlet and 14 carb if you want to use standard stuff.

As AW06 says the 1300 has better head as std, and one or two people have told me that the 1300 was a bit better back in the day, than the 1400.

I've only had a 1300 with 4 branch f13, but have been in a good fit 1400sr with f10 close ratio box and I was impressed with that too.

If I'm right in thinking you are talking bout he 14nv from the mk2 astra for sale on here? Chances are its never been abused. The 1300 could be a dog. You never know what way things could go.

As aw06 says a hybrid of the two engines would be ideal. PERSONALLY I would go for the 1400, plainly because you know its a good engine and know mileage. You can always pick up 1300 top end etc. My 1300 was sharp enough until the lifters etc seized in the head.... cam was badly worn, there was a flat on one of the lobes.... probably high miles
