I think exactly the same thing.
There a few who know how to do it, but I dont really think they would shout about it to be honest.

to be honest, I don't think that Roger Cook is about to pounce on a 'clocking ring' who play about with 10+ year old Vauxhall Novas.
The resetting of speedo readings is perfectly legal as long as you don't try to pass the car off as having done fewer miles.
Truth is, most of our cars will have had either a new engine or box in their lifetimes, so the mileage is almost irelevant apart from keeping up to date with services.

That's my four pence worth anyway.

Yeah thats quite true Mowgli i got a digidash which had 20 odd k miles more than wot my car had done, plus ive just swapped the engine go god knows how many miles that has done!

once u start stripping the dash - few crews here and there, do as ste says and itll all become obvious.

now heres one for you mileage gurus........

 if i rebuild my engine with a new top end etc, how shall i document it? i mean i want to put summat in with my FSH to say because the top end thats going on has done like 6k i think........ obviously i want to leave the dash as it is a count of miles the CAR has done, and mechanically theres a lot more parts on it than just the engine.

shall i just write a note etc?

Most of us if we played to the book would be driving Novas on Q plates.

New engine, gearbox, interior, suspension, wheels etc = 75% of parts origin unknown

Anyone buying a car of Novas age would be silly to take the mileage as gospel - how many 1.0/1.2 have done 140,000 and show 40,000 ??

Its all down to condition and how they have been maintained at that age. I knew a 1984 Nova which was bought from a dealer in 1986 with 24k on it for someone to learn to drive in - it never happened and last year the car was put up for sale - rotten chassis, engine needing rebuild, damp etc but it had a genuine 24k on. Went for scrap....

Mike I would keep your mileage as it is and just document the work done in your history, keep your receipts for any parts as well - all good stuff to have with the history.

As for the clocks, easy to change but a bit fiddly to keep the digits in line - use a bit of selotape!

put a drill in the end of the speedo cable and put it in reverse!

in old escorts (mk1 & 2) yes not sure about novas etc as never done it. but yes it does.

Doesn't work on Vauxhall speedos, besides it would take ages with a drill even if it did - just think how fast the speedo cable turns just to make the needle go forward.

it dosent take very long with a decent drill, we once zero'd a set of clocks for a new engine in a MK1 Mexico, took about 4-5 mins.
