Armed with Gaz's 'How To...' Guide I decided it was time to start on these

I didn't measure anything up which is probably wrong and just went at it with a hacksaw lol

But once they were all cut, I measured how much I'd chopped out and it was just over 60mm lol...

Nice and stubby, just what I wanted

Anyway, heres some pics of what I got upto

Only had about half an hour on these

Can't thank Gaz enough for firing up the How To thread

The hard bit has still to come though...

Any comments/critisism's(sp) lol Are all welcome

Cheers for reading

Nice work for having a go, i dont tend to have the patience for stuff that i cant just hit with a hammer lol

vaughanmc
09-06-09, 12:20 PM
Needed to do it, I'm never ever going to be able to buy a set so I thought I'd make them

I await the PM's to fly in lol I can't wait to see these progress myself actually

Just need to source a spare drivers mirror then I can crack on...It'll be the hardest though

Jack
09-06-09, 12:28 PM
Leave them like that. Ratlook mirrors lol

I'm not a fan of stubbys tbh. OEM size Nova mirrors are pretty poo at the best of times!

vaughanmc
09-06-09, 12:30 PM
Ratlook lol Not into that myself but some would appreciate it

Stubby's are the future - I tried to look through Craig Green's drivers window out to the passenger stubby to see the visibility and it wasn't too bad really, the same with Austin's :)

each to there own vaughan, were are you going to get the mirror. or are you going to cut it two haha

scott.parker
09-06-09, 12:52 PM
Mirror's the easy bit, just cut the small end off and then re-shape with emery paper on an air file, etc.

EDIT:

Right i found the thread, Ive looked at it, and Ive looked at others who have the mirrors, and i think i have figured out some slightly better techniques to apply to make these so there is allot less work involved, I'll try it over the next few weeks and document my progress, if it works as i plan then I'll share it lol

Jack
09-06-09, 01:28 PM
All the bits that are being cut out, send them to me. I'll make some extra long mirrors lol

[edit] Has anyone thought about trying some Corsa D mirrors mounted on the doors?

Would it work if I cut out the lines I've edited in red and smoothed them off and plastic weld in a piece of plastic like Gaz done to create the OE shape of the mirrors ?

Vaughan, yes mate that was one of the things i was going to suggest, and the other is this.

Cut a line i have marked in red, widen it with the "heat gun trick" then add plastic in the gap, fill etc, as i think it's essayer to do this then to try blend the already formed edges into each other etc.

I'll have a go at that as well mate, so the lines I 'plan' to cut on the actual curved casing is all right ?

I did a guide on these somewhere....

Anyway, you're well on your way but theres a whole lot of heart each to come yet mate, invest in an orbital sander.

The difference in the black part in the last pic can be sanded down to run level and the difference in height from the side will need to be bridged by bening both parts to meet each other and fitting a small slip or 2.5mm Iron/Steel in where the Mirror cover slides, if you keep the Metal failry slim, you'll still get the Cover in.

scott.parker
10-06-09, 02:37 PM
Yeah about there, maybe not quite a high on the left hand part, but something like, as thats the sort of thing i was thinking.

vaughanmc
10-06-09, 04:12 PM
Mocked them up earlier with masking tape...

Under the masking tape is more tape with lines as to where I need to cut so I can follow Gaz's instructions

Here's what they could look like:

10-06-09, 05:49 PM
I think you should fill the inside with Filler or something some sort of plaster to give you a shape to work with. The nice thing about the Plaster is you can take it, layer it with Fibreglass and make a mould and mass produce the covers from there. Not as easy as all that but thats the basics.

vaughanmc
10-06-09, 10:50 PM
Going to crack on with them tomorrow...

Me and a mate are going to have a bash I think :)

Hopefully they turn out good! :D

Cheers mate, had a wee bit more time on these today

Going by my other post on the page before with the red lines marked on, I went at it with a hacksaw and cut them out

I've not a slightly better picture in my head as to how the mirrors should look once there done:

Only slightly out of line:

I've cut 65mm out of my mirrors, this pic shows where I cut from:

lol Exactly what I thought Adam, but there a real patience tester

So out of all the people who are 'making' them...We'll see how many end up finished lol

vaughanmc
13-06-09, 07:43 PM
I've always wanted a set of Stubbys ever since I saw Brett Warburton's Nova in Total Vauxhall a few years back :)

They never came up cheap enough to buy on my budget so the How To guide has been beneficial to me

For those who are wondering...I was into Nova's in a lot of detail when I was 10 years old...lol

FINALLY lol

Got them plastic welded and the piece of plastic for the angled bit welded in and also got them skimmed over with filler :D

Just need some more final filling and some sanding then they'll be ready for paint

Hopefully have them on for Billing...

Scott

vaughanmc
19-06-09, 04:46 PM
I liked Ben's idea as well but how will you clip the case into the actual mirror housing ?

scott.parker
19-06-09, 04:47 PM
The backs just clip into the grove on the black part don't they?

vaughanmc
19-06-09, 04:48 PM
Aye but if you've shortened it will all the clips etc not be to pot ?

scott.parker
19-06-09, 04:57 PM
Don't know, as when i took mine apart last month before spray they were just clipped in tight to the groove??

vaughanmc
19-06-09, 06:35 PM
Aye I know that but if you cut them all down will that not put the clips out of place

As when I cut mine down the far away piece on the drivers mirror wouldn't sit on tight...

scott.parker
19-06-09, 07:12 PM
GLUE... lol

scott.parker
19-06-09, 07:16 PM
Well if i get time, god you would not believe the **** I'm actually doing these last few day's, been applying for jobs left right and center!

So i will document all when/if i get round to it.

Filled a wee bit underneath the passenger mirror as it was slightly uneven and checked them for size and shape again:

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/Project%20Stubbys/Stubbys36.jpg
A quick dust over with primer so I could see what I'm left with as plastic and filler doesn't look the same:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/Project%20Stubbys/Stubbys37.jpg

They just need rubbed down with finer and finer sand paper until there completely smooth then they'll be about ready for more primer then paint

Just need to work out how I'm going to go about the glass part as thats a mirrors main function lol

vaughanmc
26-06-09, 11:49 AM
Out to work on the mirrors at 9AM - Wanted to let the primer dry/harden as long as possible from the night before so I washed the Nova (looks nice and shiney) lol

Found a piece of 1200 sand paper and took it to quite a small size and started rubbing the mirrors down taking out most of the imperfections...Never going to be perfect mind you

Another one of those (here's how I started pics)...
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/Project%20Stubbys/Stubbys42.jpg
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/Project%20Stubbys/Stubbys43.jpg
Got them very very smooth so as the paint would go on nice and even - Didn't go overkill with the paint as I didn't want any runs

Gave them about 4 coats this morning and I'm leaving them in the garage to dry/harden for a good few hours tonight:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/Project%20Stubbys/Stubbys44.jpg

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/Project%20Stubbys/Stubbys48.jpg
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/Project%20Stubbys/Stubbys50.jpg
I'd say its not a bad attempt for using rattle cans to paint them - They should look better once there polished and waxed and also with the outer casing done in black

I know where to go when I'm making my next set so they look even more like OE Nova mirrors but this was only a test to see if they could be 'HOME' made...and they pretty much can

I reckon after making a few sets they'll get better but there not too bad for the 1st attempt and I WILL need some filler practise lol

Cheers, Vaughan

vaughanmc
26-06-09, 04:00 PM
Quite a while mate! The next set I make will hopefully be perfection but this was only a test

The red paint had hardened enough for me to mask it off and sand down the parts that should be black

Got all that done and heres the finished article:
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g191/vaughanmc/Project%20Stubbys/Stubbys58.jpg
Definately not 100% but about 7 or 8 out of 10 for a 1st attempt

Cheers for the comments :)

Spoke to Iain on MSN about them and it was to prove my Dad that they could be made lol

If I make another set I'll take more time on them and as you said Scott, try and do the angled case and mirror case separately :)

lol Nope

1. I want to keep them for the time being - At least until Billing is by with
2. There not 100% MINT like Nick J's and I wouldn't want to sell them to anyone else...

Maybe sometime though...I doubt they'd fetch £100 though

Cracked on with these again tonight - Only managed to find the drivers side glass

Got the plastic backing separated from the glass and cut it down to size - The amount of bodging needed for these mirrors is unreal...but anyway lol

I put the plastic part into the mirror in its final position - Going to be fixed due to me cutting out the centre part of the mirror housing - Going to use superglue round the edges to seal it all and hold it in place:

Got a cardboard template roughly cut to size but it'll need modified to make them a wee bit bigger so my 'mirror' can be as big as possible:

Until the next time...

I've decided to finish the mirrors but I don't think there going on the car

I'm going to opt for reflective plastic to use as a mirror as I've no way in getting the original glass cut

Can't wait to get them done but there not getting fitted due to them not being 100%
