No, it isn't a Nova...........I just bought this Westfield this morning, featuring a 250bhp Zetec engine on roller barrel throttle bodies, Dynamics remote reservoir suspension, Alcon 4 pot brakes, split rim wheels, STACK dash and loads more goodies;

It's been stood idle for a year, so I will go through it fully, then run it on a track day or hillclimb, see if I like it, and decide what to do with it then.

I've always fancied a Caterham/Westfield type car, and this was too cheap to miss out on.

I will have more information later today when I pick the car up. The car was rollered (and built as far as I know) at MBE Race Engines in Lincoln.

I'm taking the 250bhp with a pinch of salt, but I am going to see the man who did the work later, and find out more about the spec.

Well, I picked up the Westfield yesterday, and what a lovely bit of engineering it is too. I've attached a few pictures so you can see some of the detail;

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/031.jpg
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/032.jpg
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/033.jpg
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll66/hillclimbescort/034-3.jpg

I bought the car from someone who appeared to know very little about it, and he told me it had been built to do trackdays, rather than racing. I knew there was more to it than that (e.g. the Dynamics dampers at £1000 per corner!).

The man who built the engine (Mike at MBE Race Engines) is in Lincoln, so yesterday after I picked up the car, I took a trip to see him, and he confirmed the spec. of the engine. It turns out it was originally built by Mountune (Ford WRC engine builders) to use in the Focus Touring Car in Class B of the BTCC some years back. It makes a genuine 245bhp at the flywheel.

MBE subsequently rebuilt it for use in the Westfield, and to this day the car holds the record for the fastest ever 7-type lap round Donington (faster than a race-spec.R500).

Mike the engine builder gave me the phone number of the chap who built and raced the car for 10 years, who it turns out is one of the directors of Alcon (many of you will have heard their name in the high-end world of motorsport brakes and clutches).

This explains the carbon/carbon clutch and ultra-trick brakes.

He built the car in 1997, won loads of races with it, and then sold it as he bought a pub. He has over £40k in the car he tells me!

Just some of the spec.;

5.5" twin plate carbon clutch
Tran-X gearbox
Alloy cased rear axle with Gripper LSD
Omega forged pistons
Mike Barnby Mag 8 R500 magnesium split rim wheels
Alloy uprights
Electric water pump
Alloy radiator
T45 roll cage
486kg ready to race (so around 500bhp per tonne)

He's given me all the spec. of the car, as well as all the set-up data. Even better, the car was originally road registered, and he still has the V5 document for it, which he says I can have, along with a few roadgoing spare bits and pieces he has lying around.

I've taken a short drive in it, and it is an absolute handful. The carbon clutch needs to be slipped loads, and the stiff suspension is horrific on our bumpy road. But my God does it go. On a smooth track it is going to be awesome.

Definitely not a car I would drive without helmet and visor! Apart from insects hitting you in the face, it seems to want to spit you into the nearest ditch, hedge or wall if it can. It's certainly not relaxing to drive.

I can vouch that anyone who hasn't been in one of these HAS TO.

My dad has a scratch built 7 (locost inspired but much better built than most it turns out)....Made mostly of ally and fibreglass and weighing in at about 450 kilos at the SVA test. Up untill approx 3 weeks ago sported a "manic" ~110bph 1.6 XR2 CVH, but now holds a bike carbed XE.

You really aren't prepared for how ferking quick these things are. Did some 0-60 testing and it was consistently under 6 seconds, to 60 with 2 full size humans on board thats including reaction times of my 50+ dad giving me "Start" and "Stop" commands....with 110 bhp.

Colin.....you're new toy must be an animal mate, top buy!

The fact that you thought it was a bargain before you picked it up and seen the quality and found the history it must be one of the biggest bargains you have picked up!

Does look like a properly built car which should be almost ready to race once you have gone through everything.

was gonna say, having read the first post I guessed they would be Mountune rollers..... proper filthy bits of kit :D I've sene and run (on their dynos) some very very tasty engines from those guys.

if you havent had the inlet appart, the roller essentially opens to the entire port, which is faking huge on those engines! I dont doubt the power for a second.

I'm guessing it's a cylinder with a hole in that spins to line up with the port? Pretty sure RC engines use them, although mine used to have a slide carb.

Stuart
20-06-09, 11:51 PM
essentially yes, but getting them to work nicely at part throttle is the hard part for "real" engines. The Mountune ones managed it way better than the lumenition ones and any others that might be about.

MK999
20-06-09, 11:58 PM
ah ok, RC stuff is mostly on/off throttle anyway, the centrifugal clutches moderate power. Sounds interesting though, inlet/throttle bodies/cylinder head stuff is the main bit I understand reasonably well about engines lol Will have to see if I can dig out the TB formula brookes used last year, was a really nice design, basically a variable size venturi, formed by a 'venturi insert' sat in a venturi that slides in/out

For anyone with a substantial sum of money burning holes in their pockets, I am putting the Westfield up for sale now.

It is an amazing car, ultra quick and competitive in the up to 2 litre class in hillclimbs and sprints. It was previously used for circuit racing with a great deal of success.

I have an Elite 5 speed sequential gearbox which can go with the car, which will certainly turn it into the ultimate race or track day car.

For the car with the sequential 'box supplied as well I will be looking for in the region of £12k. Or less without the sequential, of course.

The car is road registered with V5 (but not currently road legal, although it won't take much to make it so). It also has an MSA Competition car logbook. Lots of spares come with the car including wings, uprights, wishbones, springs, Cosworth pistons, Cosworth cams and more.

I might even consider taking a Nova in part-exchange.

Later today I will get a proper advert together with the full spec. and put it up on PistonHeads, but I thought I'd post here just in case, as many track day regulars see a Westfield as the logical next step up. Trust me, nothing will come past you in this if you can drive.

The Escort Cosworth is going to be quite a piece of kit, over 500bhp and around 1000kg thanks to lots of trick lightweight stuff.

That will be up by about 100bhp and 50kg less than it previously raced with, so should get me back to the front.

I was forced to undertake a major rebuild over the Winter as one of my competitors had a monster-spec. 650bhp Audi S4 built for him, and very soon started winning.

The Cosworth will get a Project thread done for it soon I hope.

10k for that seems like a bargain given the history you mentioned before, must be double that in the engine alone?

Yes, I think it is very sensibly priced, you don't buy race winning pedigree for less than that nowadays.

I shudder to think what Mountune charged Ford for the development of the engine in the first place.
