View Full Version : PV Afterthoughts. Camping in particular.

Another PV over, so time to reflect on what worked and what didn't.

Myself, Ade and a few others discussed camping offsite next year due to the sheer amount of people crammed into the site this year (on Saturday, people had camped in all our car parking space), as well as the sheer amount of idiots banging off limiters, attempting to set fire to tents with exhaust, and general loud behaviour all night. (I think I got about 5 hours kip all weekend).

Obviously up sides will be our own space away from the tools, much better toilet facilities depending on where we go, and piece and quiet.

Downsides are it will be away from all the night activities I know some of you enjoy, plus queueing each morning to get back in.

I know we take the pee about threads talking about the next years PV on the next day lol, but I feel its best to discuss it now while its all still fresh in our minds.

So give us your thoughts...

I think next year I'll skip the camping entirely and just go down for the day, much easier and I might get more than an hours sleep all weekend.

I see what you are sayin lee but part of pv for me is mincing about the campsite at night and visiting the lame arcades.
I sleep like a log anyway so the noise doesn't bother me, however I see what you are saying
But for me PV wouldn't be PV without being at the campsite and checking out some of the abortions of vehicles about at night.
Maybe we could somehow rope an area off? or get camped against a back fence or something with a line of spaced tents to allow car parking spaces?

thats not a bad idea andy

if we got next to a fence it may be a lot better but with the sheer amount of people what would stop people pithcing up in our car spaces when we are at the stand

same here did not really enjoy pv 09 as much as last year just simple because of the weather and fact there is so many idoits drving around at night worried your going to get hit while your asleep in your tent apart from that did not have a bad dayon sat ran a 14.4 :)

you could have a png tent tag type thing, and anyone who doen't have one sort of gets their tent moved

07-06-09, 08:08 PM
the problem is tho everyone pitches up around the edge first. when me, porter and ben got in all the edge was already taken!!! so unless about 20 of us get there and 2.30-3 next year its an idea that wont work

I've camped once at PV and i'll never do it again, terrible facilities, terrible camping ground, and full of complete idiots.

Billing's facilities are much better, really looking forward to that.

Lee
07-06-09, 08:10 PM
We've tried to get an area roped off for two years running, its near on impossible unless we all turn up en mass at 3 and get to the front of the queue. Normally its just one or two people who make it and the sites already crawling with cars.

EDIT Luke beat me to it lol

Mowgli, I don't think that would work because how could it be enforced?? May also then lead onto cars getting targeted by disgruntled moved on campers who aren't with png

Not complaining at all. Just opening up a discussion :)

Fact of the matter is, this year was notably worse than last year for space, so by my rekoning, next year will be even worse still. We may end up completely separated from each other depending on when we turn up!

I agree, camping on a site with a massive group of loud people means we don't have to worry about the noise WE make, which I think is a very big plus point if you compare it to maybe moving to Billing and opening up the possibility of problems. Also as mentioned the on site amusements, be it dodgems, or naked fat birds in the dance tent lol

CP Kindly opened up one of his fields for us to use this year (which was only used by Asa james despite about 10 people saying they would ) so thats abother possible option.

I think if we continue to camp on site at PV we need to make sure we ALL get there early and get to the front of the queue and all get on site first to bag a decent area.

my idea was more on the lines of....

non pnger 'where's my tent?'

baxter (or similar) 'what tent?'

anyhow, surely clubs & exhibitors get advanced access rights, so they can set up their stand, and sort of spend time putting up their campsite... I'm guessing that some of the other clubs have people who do just that....
then you could easily ring a hire company & get a couple of chemikhazi's dropped off. etc

Which is particularly naff for the new members, I turned up fairly late friday evening, and ended up a little bit outside of 'camp PNG' and didn't really meet many other members, partly due to me feeling crappy the rest of the weekend and not really introducing myself to anyone, but I'm sure I would have bumped into a few people on the friday if I was a bit closer. I'm pretty sure no one right next to us was from png, and it's not like you could walk round everyone asking what club they're with lol I'm hoping billing is a bit more successful :thumb:

Lee
07-06-09, 08:33 PM
Definately need to all get there early doors on the friday, and get on site en mass, and pitch the tents with a space for a car next to each to prevent people pitching in the car parking spaces.

Add to that the logistical problem of trying to leave room for saturday arrivers as well, but without making it availiable to others.

At least we have a year to think about how the feck we do that, seeing as these people dont seem to give a sh*t where they pitch their tents lol

I reckon the location of the png camp last year (along the white barrier) would be a better one as once youve spaced your tents out along it then not really anyone can pitch up in front of you, oh aye luke was amusing as hell i went to wander over and saw about twenty odd of them all under a gazebo thing and they looked like right rum mofo's so i just carried on all the way round with a nonchalant whistle lol

I think the weather was the largest contributer to the crapness of camping. (certainly enough to make our plans change from a weekend trip to a 1 nighter.
What was the weather like sat night and sunday day btw? was quite pleasant in Basingstoke and if it was the same there then that would be just typical!!!

On the plus note a 14.0892 @ 101.48mph on my last run and coming home with more cash and less parts was enough to make me feel the weekend was still a very good one (cant make the wife see it that way though, she still never wants to camp EVER again!)

as for camping, santa pod need to review their facilities, id much rather pay a few quid more and have concrete/tarmac dead end road ways and have designated individual pitches so you dont get over run by idiots running up and down. they should also consider having a quiet area for those that dont want to get pissed past the point of caring about other people and sit on their rev limiters at 4am! (WHY???)

To be honest I arrived at about 8 on friday, I was ushered into the second field, despite saying can i not go camp with my club.

I really dont care about noise etc, its all part and parcel of the fun, when the car was bouncing off of the limiter this morning at about 5am LMFAO, bah bah bah bah bah BANG!

Camping at pod is what it is, there are plans in the pipeline for tarmicing the roads there through the field, i had a nice row with a few of the marshalls about this.

I said why dont you put ballast or shingle or even surface the main through routes through the campsite, cause the queue for the jetwash was insane (over an hour) just so I could run up the strip, at a drag strip. I then asked the same question to another marshall who told me that it was in the pipelines.

Lee
07-06-09, 09:22 PM
IIRC pod doesnt own those fields, they rent them when they need them.

I could be wrong, but I thought that was the main reason they have never done it.

Although it could be because they spent all their money on the fancy new garages.

Who knows. I suppose we should be lucky they are actually spending money now. I was shocked last year when they painted the gantry at the end of the quater, because it was starting to look like it had been under the sea for 10 years lol

British "Motorsport" establishments have ****ty access/parking/staff and despite raking in the cash, they never spend it on facilities.

surely its not beyond the PV organisers (not pod) to setup "club camping" areas aswell as the club stands. That way everyone is together and you can kinda control the spaktards within the club groups.

If CP is offering a field, can people not camp there, but park up on the stand before hand? Solving both problems. Car spaces sorted and quiet safe camping sorted? Or is CP's field a fair walk away?

EDIT: just read Stu's post. Club camping along with club stands seems a good idea. Would surely sort some of the obvious camping issues?

It's not our camping space though. Who actually expected to see the same spaces still available when they returned from the club stand on Sat eve?

Tbh the new weekend format seemed to work in the respect that the engine revving didnt really amount to much on sat night (I gather Friday was a bit worse), but I didnt see much point to all the ballache of moving stand items back & forth accross the site & people having to man it until 5pm.

Better weekend than I was expecting though, actually glad I went & still managed moderate 'pod burn' despite the downpour. Man it was wet this morning!

hi all, just got in and read some posts, just want to say thanks to everyone for putting on a good weekend and thanks to the lads for organising it all for everyone. it was good to finally put names to faces.

i think what the irish lads did that were camping behind us did was good, they camped against the fence with plenty of space between them on friday and then when the rest of them turned up on saturday managed to get everyone in the same area, maybe something like this would work.

sorry i didnt socialise with you all too much this weekend i promise i will try harder next time if you'l accept me after meeting me this weekend? please? lol the girlfriend is a bit shy but after this weekends weather she wont be coming camping again lol so should be sorted next time ;)

I thought Saturday night was quite tame compared to my last two PVS'.

Especially when he sprayed radioactive green goop all over himself lol

IMO, the biggest WIN of the event setup was also its biggest FAIL. Making it effectively 3 day event meant the saturday night was a lot quieter; however, it shonked up the camping side of things (fcuk knows who I had to squeeze my tent between but they were muttering choice words about PNG, none of which were particularly pleasant) and there were STILL huge queues in (and out) on Sunday morning.

AND the photographer on the entranceway must have fcuked off at 3pm saturday as there didn't seem to be any pics after that. Cleaned my car especially :(

tbh i thought the same, thought it was a bit of a let down, but I did drive 7 hours each way - not much in terms of stands, and it was just a group of cars parked on an open bit of tarmac - not real theme for a massive vauxhall meet. I guess the weather was a let down. If they had a track for racing, or maybe a garage area showing folk how to fit an engine, lower a car, build an exhaust, or even fit a custom exhaust there and then etc that would take away the boredom of watching a drag strip getting glued!!

45 quid for a dodgy rolling road gtf, I headed back early and went to Knockhill and had a good day there - but the weather was good in Scotland for a change ;)

Well my thoughts on this r that im gonna bring a god dam big metal baseball bat to clought the f***ers round the head.....we were kept awake till 4 this mornin due to 3 cars givin us abuse and bangin car off limiters every 10 mins. And because i said can you please stop doin that now.they got in a worse mood and said if i went out of the tent he was gonna "shove it up me" well id like to see him try and another thing i thought their behavour was a disgrace when there were so many families around us with small children. Always has been, always will be a poorly organised chav-fest imo.

Were there any dibble about this year? I've been up at chatsworth house for the rally show, and there must have been about 30 of them, with not the slightest bit of bother caused by anyone (including all those who got stuck in the mud, tractors were turning up within seconds to pull people out).

Its all part of camping at a place full on 'enthusiats' at pod, your bound to get the odd 200 chavs that want to shout and show off their rev limiter speed's, my answer is get wrecked and dont think about what they're doing, though the parking thing around the tents is a bit bob

LOL at Spuds rank ass! Never fails to raise (or burn) eyebrows!

Have to say I really enjoyed this year regardless of the weather. Reading all 10 pages so far it seems the camping off site/on site is split.

PV is what it is - a big chav fest for Vauxhalls - you have to set you expectations even before you attend and expect the sh1te that goes on. The only bit that annoyed me was the campsite invasion but to be fair I think that actually brought us together more as a club - the Saturday evening BBQ and "roll call" was a real laugh.

Yes - it rained both day but stopped at 11am on both days and the sun came out. The rain (like the National Day) forced us together and I spoke to a ton of people I've never spoken to before off the club (and probably forgot most peoples names in the process!)

The best thing I did this year was bring some ear plugs - I had 2 nights of really good sleep (as far as camping goes).

We also need to remember its the 1st full weekend arranged by the PV organisers and I think they will be open to "positive/constructive" comments which I will be forwarding on in the next few days. Club camping similar to VBOA is a definate win imo.

Anyway - I felt it was a real success - the stand was really busy Saturday and packed Sunday with 3 rows of top quality cars on display - speaking to the Total Vauxhall guys we had one of the biggest stands there on both days and the fact that despite the attrotious downpour (my feet are STIll wet) we still packed our stand when most of the clubs on the grass had left before 11am benefitted us big time (many thanks to all!)

Based on the quality of the cars on display we could certainly fill the VBOA stand 3 times over without problem and all those that attended did the club credit!

I thank you all...

dre the camping off/on site - I'll be 40 next year so I'd like to camp off site - somewhere quiet so I can go to bed early. I;d also like to be able to shower at least once - especially after standing in BBQ smoke for 3 hours!

However as I'll probably be organising it so I'll go where the majority go.

We travelled down Saturday and thought the 'show' was a total waste, fair enough PNG had quite a few cars, but there were some stands that were completely empty, MIG had about 8 cars, and half of them were my mates. Obviously the weather forcasts kept some people away, and I'm really really pleased I didn't bring my own car.
We stayed in a Premier in, was 6 of us and we had an excellent night, showered, nice food, plenty of beer and a comfy warm bed. Got to the pod about 8.30 Sunday and the que was only a couple of cars long, no problems at
all! I definitly would not camp there, made that mistake last year. If everyone gets booked into the same hotel nice and early then there's no reason you can't all socialize.
The guy dpi g the commentary even said on the Saturday that there was often a lot of trouble at PV during the night time, he even said more so than USC, and that is renowned for trouble, and was asking people to be sensible and keep an eye on their mates. Think that was fair enough, as there were plenty of pissed and stoned chavs wandering about lookin for trouble.
I'll only be going next year if the wether forcast is good, i'm not massivly interested in just parking my car up stationary all weekend, I'll be there for the strip.

I don't go for the cars at all. I'm not particularly into Vauxhalls at the best of times, but I would have liked to see some older stuff - I think our stand had some of the oldest cars present! Most of it was Astra Mk5's and Corsa C/D's.

The MIG stand was pretty pitiful tbh. I figured they must all be lining up for the strip.

IMO the camping was generally surprisingly tame this year. Sure its to be expected that the noise levels will be high but I crashed out at 2:30ish & all I could hear was a generator in the distance which I am sure was Santa Pod's & not a campers.

I did get asked for drugs numerous times & did smell plenty of weed about, but tbh its idiots that are on Stella all day & night that you need to keep an eye on IMO. It's always an eye opener seeing the Chavs though. I think there are some chavvy types where I come from, but the tracksuit & cap brigade at PV is something else, it seems a lot of them drive Corsa VXR's..:p

Well as it's been said, it's simple if you wish to go to the show and camp then do so, if you wish to go for a day and run your car up the strip then go on the Sunday as i did.
I have camped twice at PV 03-06 2003 was a really good one, we got together and i met some great people who I'm still mates with now,06 was alright though i didn't camp with Novaload members just friends, but on both years also went to USC, and IMO that show was/IS by far allot worse for the camp site situations etc.

It's simple really, you go there for the crack and put up with the ****, or you go for the car's and track, so get there early Sunday.

I think a club camping area is a good idea, as it's been said will stop all the mess over the few nights etc, BUT you cant stop some one putting all there rubbish on your pitch once you leave...

So there is this idea you could use, IF CP wants to let club members stay on his land then do so on the Friday night, have plenty of food/beer/banter, sober up in the morning and miss the queuing on Saturday by turning up at lunch time?

well, it was good to meet all of you, and put names to faces. a bit gutted bout the weather getting better after we left but hey ho. the turnout wasnt bad on the sunday, but as we left, so were alot of folks. imo the pod is too small and ill equipped for a 2-3 day show, and the campsite was shocking. there was a fair few good deals on the trade stands, and i met a few legends over the weekend. did anyone find out who the fecktards behind us on the campsite were with? bunch of cnuts.... vxon's 3am sat night party and generator test wasnt the best part either..... and the fact that they thought it amusing to shout stuff at the missus when she went to the "ladies".....

It may well have been the lack of sleep, as well as the weather being crap that made me a miserable git to be fair. I'll probably camp billing to give it a fair chance, can always just go down for the day next year if I don't particularly enjoy that either, but there's enough doubt for a crap weather report to change my mind.

Not a chance of me missing the show though! Definitely the one I've been looking forward to most, plan to ask for the days off tomorrow, after starting back at my old job yesterday, even though I have no holiday allowance at all lol

not really built for 1/4 miles, but the blasting round the oval would be a hoot!!!

in the middle of may, they have a huge construction plant show in the car park area. it is massive & takes about a day to walk round.

I went to a kit/sportscar show at the Royal Show Ground at Stoneleigh near Coventry back in the late eighties, & on of the roads thru the showground, they'd set up a one car at a time 1/4 mile.. it was good fun, but the safety bods would easily ban it.

also, long marston airfield near stratford is also a drag strip & showground

A few years back there was a vaux performance Sunday show at Shakespeare race way, and they never did it again..

To be fair the drag strip is better hear, but the facility's and run off ground, off roads are quite ****!

Though it's £10 on the gate, and £15 all day RWYB

For the last 2 years, I've been saying that PVS has outgrown or even over used Santa pod. The event can't get any bigger or better if it stays at the Pod & tbh is becoming a little stale & 'same old same old'. A new venue would give the event the kick up it's ar'se it deserves.

That's either funny as fook, or an equally as dull village too bloody far from me & my undergeared shed!:p

Tarmac might be a decent idea.............

I removed all of this from my rear arches today (took 30 mins with an industrial high pressure steam cleaner, and normally it only takes five mins to remove paint just to show how strong it is) and i had to jack the back end up as it was wedged right in and solidified:eek:

I was towing with a dolly back then with the Carlton. The Nova had a massive tank slapper on the way home, nearly smashed them both up lol

Yeah thats right, that was a few years ago I know. First time I met you that was.
The place was dead and you could literally do a run Q up again and do another in the space of less than 5 minutes.

Seems to me that PV at pod will always be what it is- the problems are usually a combination of weather, the people who turn up to it and pod themselves- i dont see any change on the horizon. My daughter used to work there during the holidays - the whole thing is a bit of a shambles at the best of times - there's never enough money to run it as a premier event with proper security. Incidently they rarely have any bad chav behaviour with the drag racing or dub crowds despite those events being run along the same lines.
Getting in and out will never change either - there are no other roads to it.

Hotel is the way forward - i stayed with a group of lads from corsasport last year in a travellodge 20 mins from the pod - all went out for a meal and some scoops - suitably boozey and up showered ect all for ready to for 7/8am

Only waited in queue for around 30 mins and on the stands from 9am

I cant understand why you dont do that - it's cheap too if you get family rooms......

Ive camped once at PVS and never will again-I think 19 pages kinda sums up the general thought of the show lol
But why does everybody keep going?! I missed it this year and from the sounds of it, im glad i did.The description of the nights ie joyriding on site, pissed up roughneck "badbwoiz" all over thinking they are gangsters appeals nothing to taking my family there.I grew up in an area where the above mentioned happened everyday for free-i'll be fukked if im going drive 180miles to pay to see it! lol

I keep asking myself that. This was my third PVS, and I really wasn't looking forward to going - yet had the best time ever. However, I don't go for the show, I go for the social aspect.

TBH an event any further away and I'd be even less likely to come. Fuel costs, travelling that far in a Nova (with a shonky gearbox) puts me off a bit.

That was the only thing i felt i missed not going,it sounded like you all had a good craic on the PNG area camping. The event organisers need to sort summat out with the night time antics as anywhere else and you would be thrown in a cell for the night

Ditto. I really don't struggle to ignore these people myself, I find it an absolute eye opener seeing such chavv types. I've learnt not to camp on the edge of the roadways/access within the camping area & to definately shield yourself in where possible. Don't leave yourself open to theft etc & just have a good time with the company you are with. :thumb:

i was debating trying to persuade the old man to let me take my lorry and hire flat bed trailor but seems as it would have cost over 200 quid in diesiel it would have sunk to the axels plus when im not in it which is rare one of the part time lads has it so it runs 7 days

advantage to this would have been familiar suroundings all my stuff is already in it . A nite heater which makes you wake up in the nite in buckets of sweat and a proper bed

im going to look into a beaver tail crew cab and convert it to sleeping quaters like alot of recovery boys do that way 1 nova on a trailor one on the back loads of tools havent got to worry about getting one home if i break it and a good nites sleep

the other advantage ludlando ect are about 5 hours from me so it means i could actualy visit them for track days stop over nite and if i nacker it not worry about paying recovery on a 5 hour trip

its the way forward i think
