well me and rob (sloth) have been chatting over msn and im thinking of changing plan again and going for a v6
is it worth it and whats the pro's and con's etc
all i need is a front engine mount and i can dump it in straight away as my xe is ready to be finished off anyway
so not like iv got the hassle of doing it all over again i.e cutting welding etc

any info is appriciated :thumb:

The only way I would use a V6 in a nova would be if it were RWD converted. With it in FWD it puts far too weight over the front end, it kills too much handling potential.

hmmmmm carbs arent gonna be cheap for a V6 since you need two "bike sets" and then split one... sod that.

two turbos..... in a nova bay?!?!?!?!? it barely fecking fits as is let alone adding big ass heat dumps either side.

what is the intended use of the car?

V6's are pretty unloved tbh. Mainly due to the crap gear ratio's they were fitted with & the heavy-ass flywheel. Sort those 2 issues & you are away.

Personally I'd still have an XE.

Sloth
04-06-09, 08:11 PM
stu, triumph triple carbs? or even old mikuni triple sets. the turbos bit was justa mad idea. its for road use and a little trackdaying.

craig green
04-06-09, 08:14 PM
(trackdaying) As if an XE wasnt heavy enough....... (doh)

Sloth
04-06-09, 08:17 PM
its not much more when the inlet setup is gone, as well as the loom and ecu etc.

Jack
04-06-09, 08:27 PM
As has been said many a time, the V6 isn't that much heavier, but the weight distribution is much worse. You've got 3cylinders hanging over the front crossmember ffs lol

Having owned a V6 nova for a while now, I'd happily recommend them for a road car. But for track? Not a chance in hell.

Stuart
04-06-09, 08:29 PM
and what "gains" do you reckon carbs will give the V6? (on std everything else)

I think a V6 with mappable management would be more than adequate for most uses and be a damn site more reliable than ancient carbs ;)

napalm_27
04-06-09, 08:37 PM
so stu your saying use the standard inlet with with stand alone?

Stuart
04-06-09, 08:45 PM
KISS... Keep It Simple, Stupid.

to get any decent length trumpets /inlet on the carbs will be nearly impossible unless you drop the engine about a foot and a huge bonnet bulge lol.

a non ram air inlet setup, stand alone, decent calibration (thats map to you lot) and honestly I think it would be spot on. Plus tons of scope for nitrous as the ECU can be tweaked to suit the ign timing needed etc

v6 all day simple to do aswell, only 10kg heavier than redtop wen you remove the heavy v6 flywheel and replace it with redop one. ive already told rob i have template for the front mount and part number of the smaller belt you need, then its just simple cut of front panel and rear exaust manifold chop and weld to clear steering rack, dont expect them to be mega fast as they are not, there just nice and torquey and smooth delivering power and as stated beter as a road car than track car, plus carnt beat the sound of them!

napalm_27
04-06-09, 08:57 PM
im sort of tied between the two now
thinking stick with the xe with stand alone and r1 carbs
but not to sure yet
keep the info coming tho guys
p.s cheers for all that have posted :thumb:

V6 for a schexy burble, 'A road' cruizer, smooth power and the ability to say 'I have a V6 Nova'. XE for all other reasons.

There for I choose LET lol

If you plan to have some track fun, XE all day long.

Still plenty of people who don't understand the word 'distribution' i see.

I like my Xe's and think myself to have a pretty strong one, but wasnt too sure about the V6. We recently fitted one to my m8s gsi but up until now i aint had a proper shot. Took it down some wyndy stuff and fook me, very surprising. Was up to speed rediculously quick and i have to say it handled pretty damn well, surprising when you here all these peeps rabbiting on about how rubbish they will handle. Poppycock lol
Wouldnt track one but for the cruising about and fast road it makes big smiles.....
Changed my thinking on them anyway ;)

Lee
04-06-09, 09:50 PM
Never said they wont handle when set up properly, just will take much more work and money to get them up to spec.

Smacks of small block, big block debate this lol

I predict same conversation in a few years debating wether a V8 will handle worse than a V6 lol

Wasnt pointing that back at you m8 just for the record ;) :D

But a lot of peeps pretty much right em off before they've even been in or seen one going.
I was dead set on not going down the v6 route but have second thoughts now. :D
Will be interesting once i get my Xe out on the road up against my m8 in his v6.....

Yup.

Thing is, with the XE, I was pleasantly surprised at how the car handled. It needed to be dragged round corners but it actually did go round quite well.

I tried the same "drag-it-round" technique with the V6. It didn't work, it just tried to launch me into a hedge lol

Sure you could probably make one handle, but never as well as you could an XE. As said, you'll never get away from the fact the weight distribution is probably round the 80:20 ratio, or worse.

You cannot beat ditch finders in the rain in a highish power car, such a thrilling drive :D

Bollocks. I had Wanli's on the XE (no, really, Craig thought I was taking the p!ss till he saw them) and even on those it went round corners UNLESS you tried to tiptoe round them. If you didn't go balls-out it wouldn't grip

On the V6 they just didn't grip full stop lol

Eveb tho Jack could happely pull away wile (on are road trip back from the national day) im still sticking to the xe on throttle boddies for track.
I wouldnt mind a v6 more door loon with a gsi kit from a cav gsi and full leather some how to be a baby cav gsi for road use not track.
ps i was sat around the 2k mark in 5th when jack pulled away on the m5.I did catch back up tho.
What a sound.

neither as both make a nova handle like sh*t.

having just serviced my v6 i'd stick to the xe for track use.

6 spark plugs, 7 ht leads, 5.5 litres of oil, cam belt about twice the size of an xe one. Cost me over 200 quid in parts :wall: and thats at trade price

Don't think a majority of track car owners will be phased by £200 services lol Refurbing a quaife box and diff anyone? :p

i'd rather spend the money on the said quaife box though lol

Nooo, not an omega box. Ratio's are shocking.

Since when? I used a 3.0 Omega box in my LET carlton and the ratios were perfect. Please bare in mind the diff (final drive ratio) is seperate from the box so many mix'n'match options are about.
