hi all, ok, ive had my nova now for 10 years, and its been through a couple of transformations and yes unfortunately i had a bad girl racer stage with it and fitted barn doors to the front rear sides........ ugggh! but now ive grown up and decided to make her 'proper' ie i want a factory gsi look with a bonkers c20xe! its been in storage for the past four years but fortunately when i was younger and petrol was a halfpenny a litre i had the intelligence to get the the body sorted (it wasnt that bad to begin with but i wanted it spot on) so im hoping when go ahead and get it blasted it shouldnt find anything unexpected..... anyway heres how it last looked (sorry!lol!) and ill post some pics of how it looks now after i attacked it with spanners

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y296/yayoboy/Beast3.jpg
how engine bay was:

Scott

17-06-09, 05:04 PM
scott...empty pm box

the heads been skimmed mega on the piss aswel as having too much off it imo. look at chamber 3/4, right by the manifold face...its not been touched by the skimmer like number 2 cylinder has been( awkward to explain but should see what i mean)(just off the gasket seating face)

basically, dont use chd, the head has had a lot took of it but its been checked over by pride race engineering who are **** hot and he says its fine, what he did notice tho was that dick head at chd didnt bother fitting any valve platforms to the double springs! phoned him up and he says never bother fittin em as yours has the 13mm guides! any way i had abit of a barney at him and he had a set of kent springs on the shelf, i ripped them open and ****ed off with the platforms, im proper lucky i asked pride to check the valve piston clearences as i would have never looked! i just feel sorry for some other guy who head he said he did a few weeks back and he said he left the platforms out of that as it dont need em! what a prick! his machine works good but the bloke cuts dangerous corners, dont use him, ill be using phil in the future! any way on a lighter note my engines all ready to be put together comp ratio is set and all tested by pride, just waitin for sbd oil pump and about 500 quids worth of jic hose and fitting! as 4 end colour i really havent thought that far ahead! oh and how good ares the txautosport rads? cheers lads

philip
20-06-09, 01:47 PM
**** me matey! really sorry to hear about that. im glad you had the head checked out though.

besides speccing the head completely inadequate for what your afterm they go and do that! the base plates are there to stop the springs potentially digging into the alloy and end up making the head scrap...unless go to the expense of machining each base and shimming it, also the springs would be running very slightly less spring seat pressure without the plates in too!!

btw the radiators are good, my mate runs one on his corsa LET with 400bhp and a 10inch fan and never gets hot. im getting one for mine soon. and a few other lads on mig have them. i think theres a thread that was recently put up on mig about a LET running hot, and those rads were rated by quite a fe people tbh.

anyway, hope everything will go sweet as from now on:thumb:

20-06-09, 02:05 PM
thanks m8, just do us a favour, every1 infact, get the word out not to use chd get the ****er bankrupt. can keep ya eye out for me for a good coscast head with plenty of meat on it, want a spare basically to give to you n go solids on it etc. cheers m8

philip
20-06-09, 03:00 PM
tbh matey...id go gm and do the porous mod:thumb: still save about £100 with a gm head and having mod done, than buying a coscast and going from there. but up to you. i can ring my mate and see what hes got?

What injectors did you go for then?

Scott

yayoboy

'Small Peco injector, yellow 480 High flow 14 Ohms'
Those ones, just copied and pasted from sbd's website:)

What do they offer over Vaux creams? any idea?

Price (CBA to look on SBD) lol

yayoboy

These i think are the 'upgrade' from the creams

INJ-690
High flow injector, blue 690cc, 12.5 Ohms. Direct replacement in the standard system. Used on high specification, turbo & super-charged engines

Or take a look

I wonder if it's worth me getting some before i get the car mapped, thats another thing, where/who's setting your car up?

I have found a place in Bromsgrove (near harbury) the guy does grass track racing, he does full engine set ups/tunes with rolling road etc, suspension set up's so on so on, I'm yet to contact him.

Scott

yayoboy
08-07-09, 10:59 PM
Theres 2 places im toying with at the moment, aldon automotive, or Hitec Motorsport, most likely Hitec as mick the gaffer there loves xe's, plus ive used him before and he's pretty clued up. Is the place in harbury Angel?

scott.parker
08-07-09, 11:01 PM
It's called TTS performance.

Where's that guy your thinking of using based?

yayoboy

He is in Cradley Heath, about 10 mins drive from j3 m5

yayoboy
08-07-09, 11:16 PM

scott.parker
08-07-09, 11:19 PM
It's a massive shame that Stealth racing nr me don't deal with MBE, they just use DTA stuff, but there so spot on, my mates took his 1.6 8v Turbo in to them so many times and had things done and not paid for it, they just give good service.

yayoboy
10-07-09, 08:50 PM
i nearly went with dta but was told to go with mbe by a few tuners who praise them, and luckily aldon and hitech deal with mbe and omex mainly, so its cool for me, is it too far for yourself to check them out? i take it you runnin the sbd taper kit on yours m8, hows it go?

yayoboy
10-07-09, 08:53 PM
Okay, today got my roose hoses and s/s clips and piped them in, also dropped the rocker back on to stop the **** gettin over the cams. put starter motor back on 2 and gonna start lookin at doin the fuel lines 2moz. does any1 know whats the best plugs and leads to run, some1 told me just to use the orignal gm stuff but that cant be right? anyways heres some progress pics :)

not 100% acurate... the type C manifold is what is required for throttle bodies if you want to get any place close to SBD's estimated figures.. i had the type A and over standard it made 15bhp... the typce C is meant to release another 10bhp but 20 to 30 extra torque, and torque is whatya need :)

ill let ya know when i get the new exhaust mapped ill see what the difference is between them both

Sorry i guess i should of put more detail to what i meant, OK if your running a VERY Hi spec engine, then yes that manifold will work, but if it's a mile'd spec engine on TB's i cant see it building the pressure required to need it, thats what i was trying to say, although i think i could do with a better manifold now lol but no where near as big as the BTB one was.

yes fast car many moons ago (ive had it nearly 10 years!) when i first did it 'tw*t boy' racer style, one of the pics is on the front page of this thread, the colour is still the same for now untill i start the body work project next year ( just goin for mint conditon standard and probably jupiter red or a matallic black in colour)

thanks for comments about the repairs iainel, they took me long enough lol
the manifold is sprayed with plastikote high temp aluminium paint, ive used it before and works really well, just finshed 'baking' it today, tried to fit my hispec 4 pots also but the noobs sent me the wrong caliper mount!!! ive setup a thread in mechanical, have a look see if you can help. another day on it tomorrow, waxoyl time and a few other niggly jobs before i get her back on the road!!

thanks for all the positive comments, means alot, especially when things go wrong, spurs me on lol! ok today spent timy pass side inner cv boot, as it was catching on the body, has any one had probs like this before? im using comp mounts, which are all in position correctly, and obviously f20 box with comp shafts and cvs? the way ive got round it is getting a cv boot that comes of flat instead of bulging out before it steps down (the bulge was causing the problem) just wondering if this has been seen before? cheers folks, sean

Just re-read this thread from the start, youve done a sterling job bud and really really impressed with your result on the rollers aswell, even the temp painjob looks good, i hope youre going to ditch the smoothed boot though as that and the bike sized plate let it down imo, but only a little niggle on an otherwise awesome car:thumb:

So what the exact spec of this engine, as thats massive power, and i know of other members with over £4000 on internal mods to there XE's that dont make that, thats why i gave a guess of 196 as that about right for a cammed TB xe, the cam must be mental if it's 100% spot on?

Scott

Certainly attainable with a proper lairy cam set. QED's Q450 kit can make this power if set up right, but you do need seriously evil valve springs and solid lifters.

yayoboy
28-04-10, 07:35 PM
Full port polished head 3 angle seats 1608 cams double springs ecotec lifters verniers 48 mm taper body kit on 9a4 ecu comp ratio raised to 11:1 wossner comp pistons pec rods and crank, all balanced. The dyno is bang on, plus sbd 'guessed' it would make about 240, so were not far off, this isn't just your average camd up bolt on build, and once I go for solid lifters and sbd300 cams plus dry sump, I'll be looking for 300 ;)

Lee
28-04-10, 07:43 PM
I'll be looking for 300 ;)

You obviously have the wallet for it, so fair play, but bear in mind thats going to be a very stressed engine. The cav supertourers used to run 300bhp XE's and they eventually dropped back to 250 as they needed rebuilding so much lol

scott.parker
28-04-10, 07:50 PM
Fair enough, so have spent that £4000 i was talking about then! lol

Mines "your average bolt on job" lol as im tight and have been skint for the last part of last year.

Fair play to you if you go 300bhp+ as Lee said though more chance of it popping, and you can ask him about that one...

Thats another reason why i dont want to spend loads and loads internally, as if it does go bang then it's harder to build it back up (if your not rolling in it) where as buying and XE and a basic rebuild can be done for under £500.

Scott

yayoboy
28-04-10, 08:00 PM
but bear in mind thats going to be a very stressed engine.

tbh honest matey i agree it is probably too much, but ive made a bet with steve and craig at sbd that ill get it more powerful than the westfield on their homepage lol. seriously though, this is NOT an every day car, so it can afford to be a bit close to the edge, but at the same time i dont wanna be rebuilding it all the time, hence going for the strengthend bottom end. ill see how happy i am with it at this, but ill definetly be dry sumping it, and the cams........ mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmlol

yayoboy
28-04-10, 08:02 PM
Fair enough, so have spent that £4000 i was talking about then! lol

28-04-10, 11:03 PM
this is some serious build im defo watching to see how may ponies you pull!

yayoboy
28-04-10, 11:53 PM
the torque was 198, all starts at about 4000 then drops off at 7800, when I go mechanical, I'll raise the rev limiter to 8500 to allow for the longer power band from the sbd 300s, then I think 300 Bhp is on the cards, but dry sump conversion will be next for bomb proof oil supply on the track. Iv also got to start looking at custom tca/tie bar setup at some point to, aswell as ripping out the back seats and caging it, so sorry power monkeys, you'll have to wait for the 300 mark, but it will get there, soon :)

Lee
29-04-10, 10:59 AM

300bhp is going to be mega. id look at catcams or even the silly QED 460's, but the 460s really are a 5k+ cam. i dont rate the piper cams at all. i fitted some 270 newmans, with r1 carbs, wossners, head work and TLE exhaust and made 225@fly peaking at 6.5k. but then you start heading towards 300bhp the car will be a pig too drive. if you had a car that pulled from 3k up to say 7.5/8k, it would be better to drive and quicker than another car that didnt pull til 4.5/5k up coming out the bends would be a nightmare and a bitch too drive.

yayoboy
05-05-10, 04:22 PM
thanks for advice! well done it, 3 laps round the nordschleife, 10.29 best time, which on speaking to some english lads there who had been round in evos and rs focus's, is quite good! really demanding on the car and body though, car never dropped below 4 grand! cant wait to come again but im taking the car to a proper race setup place to get all my suspension set properly as it was twitchy as fook going round some of the lairyer bends! i think harry hockley will be having a call when i get back!

hey all, well im finally bk on ere after a couple of years out, career, kids the usual things that keep us away from our hobbies lol! anyway life has settled abit now and its time to start tinkerin with the nova again! its pretty much as left from a couple a years ago when i did the nordschliefe in it, bar 2inch of dust coverin it lol. fired her up for first time earlier in the week n she stiull purrs just as she did and goes like s@*t off a shovel still so not much changed :D few things i got to do to get the project ticking again, wanna fit a gte/gsi/td rear arb should av been done ages ago but hey. also wanna set it up on equal length shafts, just need to source the intermediate shaft, bracket and bearing and a comp drive shaft to suit, that is unless there is a comp intermediate shaft but from my research that stay the same and u just use a comp drive shaft ( n just a reminder the novas 250bhp so cant compromise on shafts ;) ) next aswell is to weld in my rear strut brace that i cut at work last night all tryin to tighten up the back end. another trick little thing im tyrin to do is modify my astra digis bulbs to get round the constant popping lol, experimenting with leds and normal g4 bulbs and holders so see wat i come up wiv :) anyways enough for now, wish me luck :D
