bought for £92 off ebay, no tax or test, and a 460 miles round trip to pick it up, still unsure of final plans, but the basics read like...
13sb engine with Weber 32/34 carb,
GTE manifold/downpipe and an exhaust of some description...
lowered 40mm for the time being
fresh wheels (still undecided, between about 6 sets!)
GTE front bumper and rear splitter, all painted a dark grey
bottom half of car below rub strip same colour as bumpers, and keep the red stripe in the bumpers/strips
leave it badged as a merit, but take the vauxhall and 1.2 badges off

anyway, pics of the important bits...

not too bad on the structural rust......

get one of those battery undertrays so your trainers don't melt when it rains.

i think 6j 14 steelies off a cav/astra/vectra with the little holes, painted silver would look great on it.

all in all i'm quite happy with it, runs nice on the 1.2, managed to get my brother to give it a wash while i was at work today, and he added his first ever car mod, awwwww!
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/E801%20GCG/IMGP1342.jpg

i've given it a good going over for the mot, and it doesnt look like it can fail mechanically, only possibly on the passenger rear sill (i'm going to duct tape the drivers door for now)

so, whaddya think?

started the prep work today so we (my mate) have less work to do tomorrow. anyway, the small holes were a little bigger tan first thought...

also because one of them is close to the wing, i thought i'd get it off today and put it back on with a couple of bolts missing, and it gave me a chance to nosey behind it!

I'm just about to scrap a mk1 5 door mate if you need anything? Doors aint much good tho apart from the pas rear one? The wings are also ok :D

Asa-James
31-05-09, 08:46 AM
its the front doors that ideally need swapping on mine, and the wings arnt bad on this one. i find it nice that i'm not chasing rust in the usual places on a nova for once!

anyway quick update, welding is done, most looks ok but the welder ran out of gas so the last bits need grinding and hammeriting before the retest!

Would it not be easier/neater to put a whole replacement sill on?

Asa-James
31-05-09, 09:14 AM
yes it would if i had the money/time/patience, it'll have a pair on before long i reckon, as both sides have had nasty looking repairs at the back before i got the car. but so long as it gets a ticket for now i'm happy

what did he use to find the holes????
if it wasn't one of these, then threaten him. a friend of mine got failed twice cos the bloke rammed a no.1 phillips screwdriver thru her sill....

the lad who did the welding for me (an old workmate from the garage) went down as soon as he found out. he knows the tester, and works closely with the owner of the three garages in the chain. something has gone on and i dont know what, but i've been told my car will be passed and ready tomorrow...

MOT's all sorted now, and all legit before anyone accuses me of anything. the lad who did the welding felt guilty and paid the full bill to the garage for welding and retest(£75 all in!!) wich is a nice gesture, but i'll pay him back before long. she will go to the ball (or pv, whatever...)

well taxed and sorted this morning, so took it for a 30 mile blast (10 or so miles b road and the rest motorway) and it behaved impeccably, and doesnt sound thrashy at all at 70 in fourth. roll on saturday!

borrowed some wheels off a mate for the PVS weekend (i'm not driving 200 miles on 145's!) sat at et35, mk2 Golf GTi rims (185/60 r14)

i didnt get pics of the wheels i'm planning on putting on, i trial fitted one and it sat out at the front by about half an inch. then i found they are et26... possibly i might not go with those

Asa-James

now lowered! 60mm kit, could do with going a touch lower at the rear but i'm happy for now

also bought an SR clockse of ebay, with horrible yellow dials

but wait...
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/E801%20GCG/IMGP1505.jpg

all the yellow faces are now gone, and the needles are battleship grey (i couldnt shift that flourescant orange) just need to re-zero all the dials now and swap my speedo head into this set to keep the mileage, plus wire in the rev counter and oil pressure switch, plus need to get a switch if anyone has one...

I don't like the vw wheels

Asa-James
09-06-09, 07:47 PM
i've only polished the bonnet, and now half of the boot. and with the wheels, as stated they are only borrowed till i find something decent, i'm not driving around on 145/70 13's...

so after lowering it i decided to tinker some more, took a couple of badges off the back and polished the lower half of the boot, and sprayed up the grab handle, wiper arm and mirror caps in satin black...

James, seriously, 145's are hilarious, pump them to 30 front & 35 rear, then go out for some drifting practice. I had a b reg 1.2 merit with 165/70r13's on runing std suspension, and the grip levels were incredible. it could hang on round bends & there was no wide tyre understeer

Asa-James
13-06-09, 10:53 PM
ok todays quick update, i has put a cherry bomb on it :D
the upside was it was free and gave me a chance to try my new hobby of welding (and it turned out alright... once i'd turned the gas on:lol:)

and before people say they are too noisey etc i took it for a run down the road and its nice and quiet on the cruise and burbles nicely on idle, so i'm happy with it. still needs work to get it to sit right tho

next plan is the 1300 5 speed swap, ordered the gaskets and headbolts today to get the engine sorted, just need to get some degreaser to clean everything up before it goes in. and while the old engines out i'm going to have a proper route round the engine bay and sort anything that needs sorting (might spray it, still undecided)

Asa-James
19-07-09, 10:03 PM
right, two part update, saturday and sunday.
kicked off saturday by dragging the new engine into the middle of the workshop (read "garage after nova taken out") and stripping it down to see what state it was in. thought i'd see if it span over as its been sat for two years, and nothing. dragged out the big bar, not even a millimeter. oh noes i thought! but carried on regardless. after an hour or so i had the head off and ready to take for skimming (long story, it needs doing) and inspected the bores...
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/E801%20GCG/P180709_143702.jpg
not looking too bad, dropped some wd40 in there to see if it loosened things, it didnt. then i spotted the problem, where i'd bolted it on the stand with the clutch still on, it was jammed up...
two minutes later and it span up nice and free (Doh!) but the date on the clutch was interesting
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/E801%20GCG/P180709_143801.jpg

so engine gone as far as i could, i started to strip the carb (pierburg 2e3, lovely...) and started by "breaking" the auto choke :D stripped the rest of the carb down expecting horrible deposits, and was greeted with this...
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/E801%20GCG/P180709_143701.jpg
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/E801%20GCG/P180709_1437.jpg

the last time i ran the engine it was on a diesel/petrol mix, but with too much diesel. luckily for me its kept the carb in spot on condition, cut a new gasket for it and rebuilt (i'll bodge the choke off of my 1.2)

decided to clean out the water jacket on the block as well, as it looked a bit crusty in there, so jammed a screwdriver to knock it out and flushed away...
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/E801%20GCG/P180709_1659.jpg
mmmmm enema-riffic...

the rest of saturday was spent taking the engine out of a golf, so end day 1

Asa-James
19-07-09, 10:10 PM
onto sunday, finished work and ran over to tranmere to pick up a GTE interior (fankoo Huffy) got home and decided to see what would fit into the nova. driver seat went in easy (obviously) and passenger seat needs a subframe, onto the rears! the GTE items were 60/40 split, and the ones in mine were 1 piece, so extra brackets were looking likely, until i had the canny idea to cheat...
i removed the metal pans ont he bottom of the bench
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/E801%20GCG/IMGP2657.jpg
and removed the frame from my 1 piece
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/E801%20GCG/IMGP2658.jpg
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/E801%20GCG/IMGP2660.jpg
and lined it all up
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/E801%20GCG/IMGP2662.jpg

not perfect but close enough for me. took all the stuff inside and pieced it together while watching top gear, i wont show what was used (aside from bad language) but the end result i'm happy with, its now a 1 piece rear bench again, but using the 60/40 cushions and covers (still needs a bit of finishing, but i'm in no rush
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/E801%20GCG/IMGP2663.jpg
http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k155/asa_037/E801%20GCG/IMGP2664.jpg

thats it til i get the engine rebuilt now

No g60 steelies are 15" these ones are the "pepperopt" ones in 14" off mk2 Golf gti's and drivers. (Sorry the car is mine at the moment... and i'm a VW boy, lol)

this is a beaut.. i do have to admit i prefered the prior look with the skinny bumpers and unpainted wheels, but its still prety cool. good job on getting her thru the mot and nice bodge on the rear seats. have you done anything with the auto choke yet ? mines in diar need of ripping off for a manual bodge too.

Asa-James
26-01-10, 10:31 PM
seeing as theres been no update for a few months, i'll bung a quick one up.

its still in the hands of Raddo_Tom, so i dont see it much or get to do anything, but plans have changed! the 1.3 has been sold so i'm going to spend a bit of time faffing with the 1.2 and seeing what i can get out of it on a budget. the rear bumper got sestroyed in an "accident" with a trailer, i have a replacement one one, but that needs painting and the GTE splitter adding on. the rear arch is still gaffa taped and needs doing, and the wheels and bottom half of the car need a fresh lick before the summer.

so the engine for now will be 1.2, twin choke carb and inlet from a 13sb, gte manifold and downpipe and the rest a 1.3 system mated to a cherrybomb backbox, and a better cam (suggestions? nothing fancy, just a vaux item) and a fresh clutch with the f10 5 speed going in to make motorway cruising more bearable. watch this space!

Asa-James
07-03-10, 10:44 PM
well got some work done this weekend (pics to follow)

with the car in the hands of Raddo-tom for a while its really just been a case of maintenance on 801 (as its now known) this couldnt have got any clearere than when i got a phonecall a couple of weeks back saying "whenever i turn the heaters on the whole car just steams up!"

oh bugger thought i lol, thats the matrix gone "it'll be fine, just dont drive it far"

so he drove it the 20 or so miles to my house to sort it on friday, cue a very wet left foot, and a nicely discoloured trainer (epic lolz)

stripped the seats, front carpet and all the underlay out to dry, then set about ripping the matrix out. set it up so i could drain the coolant outside, pulled the pipe off, and nothing...

oh bugger thought i again, thats been cooked (only confirmed when Tom showed me a pic of the temp gauge in the red)

never mind, see what happens. got a decent matrix from the scrappies for a tenner, fitted, filled and ran up. and the engine ran like a dream. gotta love small block 8v's

and its currently sat in the garage with none of the interior back in, i need to find some new underlay, as the one that came out is in an "interesting" condition

anyway, Tom has the pics (its the closest i'm getting to a proper update for a while)

Another quick update, took itinto work today and finally got it tracked (only needed doing since last June) and put my SR steering wheel on (cheers to Matt-Brown for supplying:)) also trial fitted my new grill last night to see what it will look like (cheers to BMW156:)), from the comments I've had so far it's a very marmite addition, but it will be on and wired up for National weekend

Rofl my cods off! Another day, another update! After sortng the cars tracking and tyre pressures out I took it for a proper nova thrash, and it was great. Right up to the point there was a loud bang, lots of White smoke, no heat from the blowers and the temp gauge sprinting up the dial. After getting to a safe spot, I pulled the bonnet up and found this...

After much swearing, and fixing a Clio, I was given a hand in making a "get me home" repair (only two miles)

Next update, will it work properly...

Grill suits the Mk1 Nova mate! I'd have one if I didn't have the Snowplough style front end

Quick update, repaired the hose, and decided to polish a couple of bits up. I'm not aiming for the blingest shiniest engine bay going, but a little sparkle never hurts ;)

its all go on 801 to get ready for the shows now, she's rolling on borrowed wheels while mine are stripped and repainted, the bumpers are off being redone, the doors are being tackled next.

big uodate tho, i've fitted the 1.3 cam, 1.3 inlet and carb and got it running. i gave up on the home brew manual choke and bought a kit off ebay for £25 (well spent) just need o get my exhaust finished off and the car is back roadworthy. not many pics as i've just been ploughing on with it

as of today, i need one more coat of paint on the wheels, the passenger side finishing off (ran out of paint) tyres on wheels and engine setting up (i'm also doing 5 speed box and new clutch tomorrow night)

i'd like to take this opportunity to thank Raddo-Tom for his help on the paintwork on the bumpers and doors (and gearbox tomorrow), and matt brown for lending me an exhaust to get me to national weekend (yes i did end up using it, about an inch clearance on one of the boxes lol)

thats it! no more! after failing to makeit to the national weekend its just been laid up in the garage in shame. decided to pull my finger out and get some work done on it as its only 4 weeks to billing, and it needs mot'ing, until i realised the extent of welding needed far exceeds my skills, and i just dont have the time or money to get it done elsewhere in time. so another of my projects has failed to come to completion, and i'm on the scrounge for another.

never mind,

RIP 801

to be fair most of the car is solid in the right places, it desparately needs a new front crossmember, n/s rear arch sorting and attention to the o/s rear arch behind the bumper, as well as the obvious holes in boot floor corners. tis a shame, but i've had nothing but ballache with this car this year and i'm tired of working on it and putting money into it. i'll be keeping some bits, selling others, and may yet sell/give the shell away (depending on what i get next)

So after changing my mind more times than I care to remember, I've manaed to pick up all the bis to repair the five door at billing weekend. I'm going to take my time with It now and get it done properly, and possibly go in a new direction with it. From here on class it as a new build!
