Look what I got today :)

Took a trip up to Manchester (a fair old trip, like 6 hrs) and picked up this little beauty from a fellow Migweb member for my Nova SR. As you can see work has allready started on her performance upgrades ;)

Looks like its been hot - or has the top hose or summink been damaged and allowing coolant all down the front of the engine? The oil filter has been badly stained by it?

As far as I know it hasnt got hot, the rust down the front is from where the top hose was taken off and coolant has run down the front of the engine and its been sat in a damp garage for some time and corroded, plus its a 12 year old Vauxhall lump :)
None of this matters as its being stripped and rebuilt anyhow. This is what I got up to today

All ready tomorrow for a bit of flowing and mild porting, then off to the engineering shop for the valves to be waisted and the guides to be trimmed down flush with the head and a skim. Might need a bit of welding done as you can see there is a mild bit of corrosion on the left hand end of the face of the head, it aint on the sealing part of the gasket but might aswell get it sorted. Ordering a Piper cam kit tomorrow and stripping the bottom end so it can be sent off for a regrind and lightening and balancing. Luckily enough its got a new uprated clutch in it so that will be sent off aswell.

Well as my engine stand arrived today I thought id set to stripping the bottom end down.

How rusty is that sump ????? least it means it aint been leaking oil.

All bearings etc were fine but will be replaced of course as will the oil pump. Will clean up the crank, rods etc tomorrow ready to be sent off and will give the block and sump a much needed clean and repaint.
Things are progressing nicely and all being well I should have a nifty 1.6 built before long :)

Just wondering mate, are you a mechanic? or are you like Ste, you just know a sh1t load about engines? I recognise the parts in an engine, but wouldn't have a clue where to start stripping the engine down or how to rebuild it!

with all the work you are doing, you could do a guide after it is all finished, would make an interesting read.

Your doing exactly the same to your gsi engine as i am doing to my turbo engine, its quite worrying at times when you have to think if you put something in the right way round or not! Rick

Hi guys.

I work as a technician in a SEAT dealer in Milton Keynes. But I worked at a few Vauxhall dealers for around five years including a time at MSD building the Vectra GSI's, ST200's etc etc so im pretty familiar with the 8V Vauxhall lump and where bits go etc.

Ill keep updating the pics as im progressing and if they want to be used I dont mind at all. I run the technical side of www.astra-sport.co.uk anyhow so im used to doing 'how to's'

Started playing with the head today, just a little bit of porting and matching to the manifolds.

Started doing the inlet on the left hand cylinder, just removing the casting marks and smoothing it out a bit, also cut down the valve guides on the inlets (which are removed at the moment, got new bronze ones to put in ;) ) so they are flush and smoothed out the ramp which leads up to them

Wont do much to the exhaust ports, just smooth out the casting marks and enlarge to match the manifold.

Should help it breathe a bit easier, like a Strepsil for your mota :)

Block all done now, given an acid bath to clean it up, very little wear on the bores so just honed it out. Cleaned up the block face and a lick of engine paint...much better.

Just waiting for the internals to come back so I can assemble the bottom end. Engine looks somewhat different now than it did a week ago :)
