I'm still having issues with the fuel gauge level on my GSi.

It reads empty when the ignition is off, however turn the Ignition on and it reads full.

I've just fitted a brand new sender unit, hoping that would sort it, but no it still does the same.

So i'm starting to think it's a wiring issue.

How does the sender unit "talk" to the gauge.

I assume it's on resistance, if the gauge isn't getting a feed from the sender unit, would it read empty or full?

Can anyone enlighten me, how they talk to each other.

Is your car a Genuine GSI, and not a pov spec one with GSI clocks?

Weird then lol. Id deffo say gauge eather way. See if you can lay your hands on a fully known working set of SRI dials or pov spec ones, If the gauge works then you know the problem.

the sender is just a variable resistor, so raising or lowering it should give a different gauge reading, it sounds like a short out somewhere. trace out the path of the sender wire where it comes thru under the back seat & under the floor carpetting to eliminate a short, or try running a wire round the outside of the car to see if that works.

Your right but it seems funny that its the standard 6 dial clocks problem
