Not the most interesting of threads i know but after the failure of my old iron, i needed a new one.
The old one was 80w and little under powered imo, so i trawled t'bay looking for something about 120w'ish - then i found this mofo!

300watts of soldering goodness :D

Now i can crack on and make a loom up for the Nova, however it seems i under-estimated how big a 300w iron was!

Now i need to buy a slightly smaller one me thinks :)

Next to my old 80w:

Antex soldering irons FTW!!!!!! I'v done jobs that a pikey 100W iron struggeled with, using a 20W Antex one lol

I prefer to use a mini blow torch/jet burner lighter, makes a much neater job IMO and its much quicker.

80w or even 40w should be fine for soldering loom wires together, the reason yours is full of fail is the tip is shagged! That 300w one is going to set everything within 100m alight though lol

Get a gas iron, guns are less, erm, acurate in my experiance, if you get a fine tipped one the you will go far!! great on a range of things that i found, from tinning wires to joining 2 wires together

i use my gas iron for work, but only because usually the electric has been disconnected, electric irons are generally better imo, but on that note, it really depends on what solder you use,

leaded solder all the way really, unleaded is terrible the melting point is way too high

silver solder is pretty good :p

whats silver solder? a make? or is it ACTUALLY silver solder? because if it is i would only use it with my diamond encrusted iron lol

it's about 3% silver, flows a lot nicer than the normal stuff, supposedly not too expensive in maplin etc, but an absolute rip off if you buy it from a model shop like i did lol
