If you get stopped by the police and they suspect the engine in the car is different to what its registered as what happens? say for example the car is registered as a 1.2 nova but its actually a LET, would the copper ask you to open the bonnet, see that its blatantly not a 1.2 and do you there and then or would you need to take the car downt to a VOSA place to get them to decide if its the right engine?

The other things I thought of were would it go down as untaxed as youre taxing a 1.2 when it shoudl be a 2.0, would you get done for no insurance as technically you dont have with the car youre driving being totally different to the one insured any and does the car get taken off you there and then or later on and if so what happens to it when it does get taken away. Has anyone off here been caught out with this.

The reason for asking is Im looking to buy a XE/LET and just weighing up the options of "drive it legitamatley" and pay an extra 1k in insurance or drive it as "honest officer, its a 1.2 but my bonnet cable has snapped" and pay bugger all

Afaik in that situation you would be looking at tax/insurance fraud at the very least and in some cases depending how far it goes (i.e. to court and depending on the judge) possible prison time (depending on your record)

Your best bet would be to insure it as it it a 2ltr and then drive it home from wherever youre picking it up from then registering it as its correct engine size at your earliest opportunity, this way if you do get stopped you can be honest and say its registered as a 1.2 but ive insured it as a 2.0 purely to drive home and i fully intend to register it correctly, that way if you do get stopped youre showing willing/honesty and youre more likely to be let off or just reported to dvla which you should only have to pay the difference in back dated tax, plus aswell if you pull the old 'oh noes my bonnet cable has broked' they will probably come back to you that your vehicle is un-roadworthy due to being unable to access the engine for maintainance and or a fire hazard or something like that!

I was in a very similar situation with my XE a few years back but luckily the copper didnt know anything about cars otherwise he wouldve clicked that a nova 1.2 merit shouldnt say DOHC 16v on its rocker cover lol

It was only two weeks before i was due to register it as an XE but it didnt half scare me so i borrowed the tax money from a mate and did it early, these days you cant get away with anything and driving offences they seem to be cracking down on heavily, so do yourself a favour and go legit:thumb:

Tax Evasion
Insurance Fraud.

Both things the police seem to be quite hot on these days, so certainly a hefty fine if caught, and possible chance of time (mainly for the tax evasion)

If you can't afford the insurance, you can't afford the mod.

Do it properly first time round

im 21 with no no claims, but been driving 4 years. no accidents etc though.
im paying 821 on my corsa c20let with phase 3.5 and all other mods declared.

If you shop around its not much more expensive anyways tbh, i actually found it was cheaper than some firms wanted to insure me on a standard corsa gsi

tax on the 2.0 is also the same as a 1.6 so isnt that much anyways, but if you cant afford to do it properly stick to your 1.2 for a while until you can.

This has just happened to my mate, he's going to crown court!
He was done for tax evasion and obtaining insurance by deception amongst other things like accelerating away from a county mounty in a 530 on the motorwaylol
his car has gone from this

We know exactly where it is, otherwise how would we have a photo of it lol
there is a bit of an investigation going on at the mo as he obviously wants his car back! he didn't even get chance to get his personal stuff out of it! still had all his CD's and sat nav in it when they took it!

I'd be down there asking how much it was for the engine out of the corsa 1.2... nah course it is look, we looked it up on DVLA and everything lol

lmao good idea:D

Im just amazed how they can take your car, that you spend £0000's on without letting you take anything off it, then it ends up in pick-a-part/cubed! So you end up £0000's out of pocket, and they end up £0000's the richer because they just sold all of your parts!! probs even be willing to sell them all back to you at twice the price they would normally charge!!! Mind you, just speaks for getting it registered right!

There was a few other factors that made it worse for him but that's not for me to descuss as he hasn't been to court yet. Once it's all over and done with I'll let who ever wants to know what happened if there interested.
At the end of the day tho, you could have many years "cheap" fun motoring if you don't declare your engine swap but it could all end in tears like my mate ;)

if you dont drive it legit its really risky and if you do get caught they will literally rape you like mr. corsa turbo above. so either wait till you cant afford tax and insurance or dont but drive carefully you have an accident you can get a fine and a jail centence!

Pisses me right off when folk say "im after a 2.0 Corsa or Nova but it needs to be logged as a 1.2 so i get cheap insurance", get lost, if you cant afford to tax and insure the car properly then tough luck, either wait to get some no claims, a few more years behind you or stop being grippy.

indeed, but there are annoying pikey berks who think that they are invincible, remeber mr orange show nova??
if you cant afford the TAX & insurance for a bigger engine then dont bother doing it, or putting it on the road!

There is a lad around here with a 1.6 Civic Turbo and he said that it had nothing to do with anyone else when we pulled him up for it being logged as a 1.5.

novaguy08
16-05-09, 02:21 PM
Really he was that much of a goon he believed that he was able to keep it as a 1.5???

iv got no problems affording either tax or insurance on it done legit but with the above replies it will definatley be done properly. The money I will get selling mine will buy the car, tax and insurance for it so no problems there. If all you got was a slap on the wrists id insure it as a 1.2 but I really dont fancy getting completley **** raped for it. Ive got a clean licence and record and 100% intend to keep it that way or the degree im doing will be worthless if I do get a crim record. Wheres the best place for insuranc on such a car, adrian flux or somwhere like that?

I know poeple that do it/have done it, its a risk you take. If you get caught then thats it, if you get away with it its all good.

Tax/insurance is a complete ripoff the amount you pay. Its going on alot more than people realise, police are pretty stupid 99% of the time most of them havent got a clue.

My last nova never got registered as a 2ltr, was insured as a 2ltr. I got pulled countless times, and even telling them its a 2ltr whilst looking at my tax disc they still didnt clock on. One copper was more interested in what i had done/did i do it myself/ cars cool what you gonna do next!
