10w40. These engines are getting on. Too thin a grade will get past seals, leak out of gaskets & make the lifters tappety.

Personally I buy cheap(ish) oil & replace often (before it goes black).

Do not use engine flush on an old engine.

i have topped it up with 1.5l of 15/40 just to go 10 miles where i am going to drain all the oil out and change it with 10/40.

This will be fine won't it?

Why not 15/40?

The first number on the oil grade is the thickness of oil when cold. The second number is the thickness of the oil at 100deg.

So 0/40, 5/40, 10/40, 15/40 are all the same thickness and give the same protection when at 100deg.

The lower the first number the better the cold start protection the oil can give as it can flow much quicker around the engine when cold thus protecting you more on start up.

Ive chucked 20/50 in mine for the time being.

I'm going to run Valveline VR1 semi synthetic 20/50 racing oil. As Tom pointed out to me, these are old engines. I got it through work £15 instead of £30 :)

Although it currently has Asda Smartprice 20/50 in it while i checked the sump and cleaned all the old oil out for 100 odd miles etc.

10/40 semi for me, genuine Vauxhall from Autovaux and about three quid for a filter you can't go wrong

can you get a 10 or 15/50 fully synth at all? I'm having a mare tracking some down. I've got 10/60 in my 2.2 at the moment but want to thin down a touch but 30and 40 is too thin lol
