as many as you can afford :) the more the better and also take your time, do lotsa little layers rather than few big ones, for two reasons. One it will run and look poo, two, if you whack it then chances are that if you have lots of layers on it wont go thru to the previous colour, if that makes any sense whatsoever

lol!

If using cans...

key surface by sanding.
spray with plastic primer - 15 mins between coats - 3-4 coats
allow to dry (24 hrs)
smooth using v fine wet n dry (wet) 800+
dry off and degrease/clean
leave to fully dry (primer absorbs water)
before spraying top coat leave cans in hot but not boiling water for 5 mins (loosens paint materials making it flow better)
spray top coat, keep can vertical to work 10" from surface, sweeping motion, do 3 layers - allow 15/20 mins between each layer.
allow to dry for 24-48 hrs
smooth using wet n dry (800+ wet)
assess if more paint needed
if needed spray 3 more coats (repeat step 9) allow to dry 24-48 hrs
smooth using 1000+ wet n dry (wet)
if you want shiny skirts lacquer (do step 9) - no need to smooth
allow to fully dry for 7 days
clip onto car

Thats how I did mine and theyre mint.
