Hi Guys,

Please help. My Nova Gsi is just had an 8 year rebuild. Road testing has raised the following problem:

Not taking fuel at petrol pumps.

I'm running a GSi injection fuel tank, X1 fuel line from the sender unit to Facet Solid State fuel pump mounted near the filler neck/tank join, then to a Fuel regulator mounted in the engine bay, then to twin 45 webers. There is no return pipe to the tank, just a blocked off on the tank.

On the 4 occasions I've needed to refuel, two of them have proved troublesome. At the pump it will only fill the filler neck, no more, when the neck is full ( 86pence worth ) it won't take anymore.

So far I have tried, waiting for it to go in, this takes for ever, over 30 minutes per filler neck full of petrol.

Also, removing the neck to tank rubber hose, inserting a screw driver in to the main tank entry hole to check the anti syphon device isn't blocking, all ok there.

On some occasions it does fill ok. Mainly if I've only driven a short distance to the petrol station. Or if I fill with a a petrol can it goes in a little better but still slow, approx 5 mins per 5 litre can.

The only thing I think I could try without getting too involved will be to insert some sort of hose down the neck in to the tank maybe???

With the National day looming I don't really have the time or facilaties to drop the tank.

Any ideas on what could be causing this and/or solutions / previous known problems. Could the breather be blocked causing this kind of trouble?

Additionally if anyone knows exactly what out/inlets are on the GSi injection tank and the purpose for each one that would be a great help.

Any help/hints or tips would be great. Failing that it could take a long time to do the 500 mile round trip to the National day.

Thank you people

Frank

I'd still say take your anti syphon system out and check it over. Can be the only cause for non filling at the pump.

If one of the 4 plastic legs is snapped or bent this will cause the ball to jam. My money is on this being the problem.

I also agree with this :D It happened on me once. Was a nightmare trying to get the little ping pong ball back out. lol

remove the rubber join bit, and put a longer bit on, tip some water down the filler, see if it comes out the same speed as going in, thats would rule the filler out

Has the tank got a breather pipe still? Surely if it hasn't you'll get a vacuum?

not really simps, if the filler cap is a good seal the vacuum will go away soon as you take it off....... but iirc the filler cap IS NOT a very good seal

No, i think what he means is, there is a small breather pipe on the side of the filler > tank tube/pipe. If thats blocked it could cause a vacuum.

as far as I know the tank still has a breather. There is no sound of vacum escaping when the cap is taken off or any fuel starvation. Cheers though.

I thnink this will be my next line of investigation. Just to clarify, is the anti syphon ball in the tank inside the main filling pipe? Also how much aggro was it? Does involve dropping the tank? And can you remove the anti syphon and make do without?

You should be able to get the main rubber hose off and remove the anti syphon tube/ball with the tank in.

I already had the tank off on mine. I took the sender out and the ball from the little filter had just popped out of the casing. It only clips in via 4 little clips.
It's probably easier with the tank off so you can get the ball back out. It makes for a exciting game. lol

The anti syphon just sits in the main inlet to the tank.

if you have made the breather pipe on the side of the filler pipe a bit to long it kinks as it goes through the hole and back round to the tank .if you have used a thick rubber pipe for this it kinks a lott easier to. use the fabric braided thinner pipe does the job nicely.:)

Agreed!
Had the very same problem before. It took fuel from a can but not at the pumps. After a hell of a lot of investigating found the breather hose from the side of the filler to the top of the tank was kinked
Unkinked it and problem solved :thumb:
