My other half has one. They were great new but my advice would be don't bother unless it's low mileage. Rear axle bearings once knackered means a new axle.
Dunno about the std GTi, but my sister had a GTi-180 for a while. It was awful to drive and own. The final nail in its coffin was when the alarm refused to disarm and wouldn't unlock the car lol

lol its french, so most people will slag it off even thought hey have probably never owned one!!!! As with all cars it probably has its faults, BUT IMO the french are the only ones still building hot hatches. Have a gander on google see what reviews it gets. I'd consider it.
I would definetly have one, although i would probably lean towards a 180 due to the obvious higher power output and better interior. My other half has a 1.1 206 which i drive all the time and its a very high spec model and i love it.
No, really, don't get a 180, they're shocking.
BUT IMO the french are the only ones still building hot hatches.

Too true Rj. Took them long enough though. Renault have had hot clios out for ages, as have Peugeot....

IMO, the newer ones done really cut it as hot hatches. Their more...luke warm lol
If i was to buy a hot hatch from todays market, it would more than likely be a french one. The others seem to try too hard and fail miserably.
Std GTi was always a bit soft though. Its only recently (ish) that VW have started bringing out better versions like the R32 (possibly to annoy Skyline owners) and V50
could say the same about other pugs/renaults.
Edit: To pete.

^ What, that they are not hot hatches??
The newest Pugs dont really cut it for me. The Renaults are just ace. The clio (which has its own race series) the megane...all cracking cars IMO.
megane R26.R....... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I dont think i would buy a 206 gti 180, mainly because they are pretty gutless (the ones ive driven). I would definetly get a Clio 172 or 182 instead.

me and my old man had a clio v6 phase 1 straight off the production line when he worked for arrows f1 team (they designed and built it some were along the line)
i was a fair bit younger but wat a car no miles on the clock and my old man nailed it and i took it very well only problem with all these cars are the turning circles are crap lol
but mate has a 206 gti and he hasnt had any problem with it at all and thats on a 02 and done over 100k
Car with 0 miles on the clock and your dad nailed it, way to go. lol
I would never have a french car again after having a clio.
It was 4 years old from a main dealer forcort and it spent most the next year in and out from there most times on a aa truck.
I sold it at the first oppotunity(well it was running and not on a tow truck)for less than half i had paid for it a year before as i wanted it gone.
I got my first gsi nova then and never looked back.

i personally would have gone jap rather than french, the new mitsubishi colt rallyart, its £12k new, lower insurance group than all of the above, 1.5 turbo and 147 bhp. the thing only ways 1000kg and i bet it would still be quicker round corners than the clio or 206.

got the zetec s it is minted very well looked after :) no where near as fast as my corsa but not bad for what it is
I had a 206 GTi for a year or so, very cheap motoring, never spent a penny on it, not exactly rapid but handled very well, very reliable and good high spec with a decent build quality.

Bit difference between £1k 206 GTi to a £15k Corsa VXR!
